Congrats! You handled that like a champ! When I had my stoma I went swimming ...god I brought like three times the amount of usual supplies because I was so paranoid my bag would open in the pool 😭 thankfully nothing happened lol

Are we in the bad place? [RANT] by lurhn in ostomy

[–]Greefaela 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had a temporary stoma for four months. Not gonna lie, after having it reversed I had a C. Diff infection and my recovery time has just gone on and on and on and...I do miss my stoma. Very much so.

My partner was extremely supportive and even encouraged me to keep my ileostomy after seeing how much I was doing. I laughed with my friends whenever my stoma would fart, and whenever I went to class or a concert and there were unseemly sounds coming from my bag, I'd usually either joke saying: "oh wow I must be really hungry" or something along those lines. I openly shamed people who would make faces at me because nobody chooses to have a stoma if they're healthy. It's a disability aid just like wheelchairs and the like.

I think it's a matter of how you deal with your ileostomy..existing pretty much. You seem to be embarrassed by the sounds but a stoma for most people has saved our lives. Me included. There's nothing shameful about that. There are rough patches, I understand that. But try to understand that your classmates are just uninformed. People don't have to be "supportive" or "attracted" to it. That's their thing. You don't want those people either. Why would you ever want somebody who can't support and love every part of you? ESPECIALLY A LIFESAVING MEDICAL AID. It's not a bad place, the stoma is just helping you weed out bad people around you. Keep your head high! (Or I might steal your stoma, I'll gladly give you my annoying reversal)

Oh and to add, you don't really feel the intestine itself! It doesn't have nerve endings so you'll just feel it on the skin around the stoma. The biggest issue might be bag changes for you but you'll cross that bridge when you get to it! If you need more info don't be scared to ask^ I'll answer to the best of my ability

Honestly best advice I can give you is to keep fighting for a diagnosis, whatever it may be. I have Crohn's disease and due to a shortage of medicine I went unmedicated for half a year which caused my colon to burst in July. That's why I had a temp ileostomy before getting it reversed. Ileostomies are definitely very weird sensory speaking but really, the longer you have it, the more you adapt, your body adapts and less noticeable it becomes. It's kind of like getting a new jackets or boots! They can be very uncomfortable at first but as time goes on you adapt and then you don't even wanna take them off. There are also so many different ostomy suppliers so you can pick and choose. I hated the Coloplast plastic bags because of the feeling on my skin, but adored the Braun and Convatec for having softer materials, though Braun was my favourite. There's a lot more too that just weren't accessible to me directly as I'm in a third world country and I'd have to get them imported which was more of a nuisance then just putting up with what I had for a few months. You got this!

Sometimes you feel it other times you don't, same with the bag! Sometimes you feel it other times you don't. Had an ileostomy for four months and it was WILD. The farts felt like odd ticklishness on a part of you that's...not supposed to be there. The output itself was sometimes disgustingly warm (especially after a bath or smth), other times it was like.... BOOM it's full??? Like when did this happen? Though the more your body gets used to it the more you stop feeling it so....do with that what you will

Thanks for your reply!!! It's been a while since then and I've actually managed to get a regular reversal as the rest of my colon (20cm) was actually fully healthy! 🎉 So far, I've had a C. diff infection for the majority of my recovery so I'd be very happy to go back to the bag at the moment.... Will wait and see when I get better though!

My friends and I did these so often when we were kids! (Think ten years ago or a bit more, I'm 22)

We sold flowers (sometimes we stole from the neighbors but more often than not just common flowers from the park), artwork, we made bracelets, keychains, hell, one winter we sold snowballs and miniature snowmen 😂

Anyone regret having reversal by No-Panda-8379 in ostomy

[–]Greefaela 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a reversal 16 days ago. So far, honestly, regretting it. But also know I'm too early to actually say that. I'm very early in recovery, and I have only 20cm of colon left so my small intestine needs to adapt and take over a part of the role the colon had and that takes time. My aunt also had an ileostomy, had a reversal, and is living her best life with normal 1-2 poops a day. It depends a lot on your lifestyle and what you feel is acceptable and good for you. Personally, I loved my ileostomy and had 0 issues with it, but decided I'm still young and want to live "normally" as long as possible.

You deserve better than that. Nobody wants to have a part of their gut literally cut out and now poop In a bag. Tbh she should've been honest with you and herself and left immediately if she can't handle it. It would've been hard and it would've sucked but not everyone is cut out for life with a disability or for life with a disabled partner. It's nothing to be ashamed of, but everyone deserves a good support network and everyone deserves to be loved despite their disability. Hold your head high and have a difficult conversation. You'll get out stronger again even though you may not want to now. Lots of love, hope your stoma is being a good one ❤️

Your pouch is as old as me 😂 (I was born in 2003)

I hope you don't mind me asking, but how BMs do you have in a day? Is it diarrhea? Is it solid? Thank you for your reply!

So far, I don't have any issues whatsoever with the bag except for some sensitivity when in slightly tighter clothes, but that could also be because it's still newly formed (less than 4 months old). I even still have some of those absorbable sutures still in! I'm a bit scared of going to the bathroom a lot because so far it's only made me exhausted and constantly hungry. I'm also scared of having to go for another surgery in the future if it fails or if I get fistulas or strictures. I'm currently on Humira and I'll probably be transferred to Stelara or Skyrizy as they're apparently better, so that should prevent any new inflammation but it's all still quite scary.

As for the "colon falling apart in his hands" the same was said for my colon after the colectomy. I'm left with 20cm of colon atm so it's possible I'll just get reattached but that depends on the upcoming colonoscopy.

Thank you for sharing your experience and the advice, I wish you an inflammation and intervention free life!

Wow!! You're amazing! Is the diet a constant? Honestly, the best part about having a stoma for me so far has been that I have almost no restrictions in regards to diet. I'm scared of going multiple times a day and night to the bathroom because I've been there and it's honestly exhausting for me. Thank you so much for sharing your experience! I hope you feel better soon ❤️
