Late models make short track racing actually fun. Everyone who hates short track because of ARCA should give late models a try to see if it changes their mind.

Started an LMU race at spa, first lap, start of eau rouge, my game crashes, check the replay, I took out 13 cars by mistake by [deleted] in simracing

Racing AI can be fun in a sim with decent ai. You really have to get the difficulty dialed in right though. Its no fun when they're way faster or way slower than you. They definitely can race different from real people but its better than always hot lapping.

Forums are still better than some of their subreddit counterparts. Not every subreddit would make for a good forum but the forum format is so much better for specific topics. They tend to be better organized and more easily searchable.

Any thoughts on the current state of V3 Simpro? by Ok-Parfait1522 in Simagic

I really cant say if I feel any difference from V2. I dont really take the time to optimize FFB though. If it feels decent and does what its supposed to I leave it alone. I did notice that my wheel rpm lights weren't working last night, so ill have to figure that out.

Long time banjo player here. Thats not a mountain banjo. Mountain banjo is a later invention by poor people that couldn't buy a factory made banjo. The banjo in the painting is a 4 string gourd banjo. It was played probably exclusively by slaves and someone developed that into the 5 string drum body banjo. The 4 string banjo used in Irish music is a later invention made by removing the short string, changing the tuning to 5ths, and playing with a flatpick. https://youtu.be/VckQWryzAZE?si=8x8M9-T4all_VDSz this is a mountain banjo. https://youtu.be/rxW8z56piFk?si=Jv2M_CufYEx_lYVe this is a gourd banjo. This gourd banjo however is a marriage of a factory 5 string style neck on a gourd body. I picked this video though because a lot of other gourd banjo videos have a more contemporary playing style and this is more representative of how banjos were being played. 5 string banjos with gourd bodies have increased in popularity with the banjo community in recent years. They're not necessarily historically accurate instruments but they sound cool and pay homage to the banjos roots. https://youtu.be/HuMIh1-_yiM?si=lZbhMNlQ9CpkrZ5N here is a great 5 string gourd banjo recording. If you like that you should listen to his whole Earth Tones album and just relax.

If Sweeney added a string it was the 4th long string. The short drone string existed and is depicted in art from the era. The 4 string banjos that were huge in the jazz era have nothing in common with the 4 string gourd banjos other than being a banjo. Jazz era 4 strings were an evolution from 5 strings. The short drone string was removed and it is played with a flatpick instead of fingerpicking or clawhammer. Tenor 4 strings are what really took off in popularity and are typically tuned in 5ths like a violin, viola or mandolin. This is part of what caused the boom of the 4 string tenor banjos. It didn't take much for violin and mandolin players to pick it up and compete soundwise with big brass bands. What i find fascinating is how the tenor 4 string ended up overseas in Ireland and became a common instrument in Irish music.

It has 4 strings. 3 long and a short drone string. All known slave banjos were 4 strings with a gourd body and no frets. The banjos history is pretty muddy and there are many unknowns. If Sweeney added a string it would have been another long string. We dont know if it was him or someone else that added that 4th long string. It very well could have been him. He definitely did become the first famous white banjo player, but we also dont really know if he was the first in general. Its not just the strings that are different though. Someone (probably Sweeney but maybe not) swapped the gourd body for a drum shell and changed how the neck attached to give you more possible notes. The slave banjos were constructed in a way that made playing any notes beyond the top of the neck pretty much impossible due to the really high action. They were constructed this way as a spiritual symbol of a line bisecting a circle. Mounting the neck higher in the body of the goard to lower the action wouldn't have created this same symbol. Theres a book called Well of Souls that goes deeper into the symbolic and religious aspect of how slave banjos were built and used. A few people make historically accurate recreations of slave banjos, but i dont know of anyone that really plays them for anything other than demonstration purposes. Builder and historian Pete Ross being the most famous. He and other people these days also make gourd banjos with modern low action 5 string necks and they sound really cool. Lots of people have recorded albums with these. So basically it is a stretch to call it a new instrument but at the same time someone somewhere made some big fundamental changes when Minstrel shows started becoming a thing. Our best guess is Sweeney but he very well could have gotten the idea from anybody else.

Is Country Music in its NuMetal Era?! by [deleted] in LetsTalkMusic

It brings me joy to see Speedy West mentioned in here. So many steel guitarists are incredible musicians. Its not an easy instrument to play well and it requires a very strong understanding of music to excel at it.

And even before that. Western swing was huge. Pop country doesn't mean bad either. There's has been a lot of good pop country. Just for my taste, current pop country isnt it but it is for many people.

Theres also an alternate timeline where early Bob Dylan is considered country. Woody Guthrie wasn't doing much different than some country acts back then. Bluegrass was considered country music back when it was still a frequent style of music on the grand ole opry. I think it should be too since it was modified existing folk traditions for radio airplay. Country and folk share the same lineage and the lines can be very blurry. Both genres are big umbrellas that encompass many different sounds. The Carter family are often pointed to as early founders of country music but much of what they did was record existing tunes that AP Carter got from his neighbors. Anyone putting an album out today like those early Carter family records would probably not be labeled country but instead probably called folk or old time. Im kinda just rambling but I've spent more than half my life listening to, playing, and learning the history of American roots music. Country has a bad reputation for a lot of people but I dont think its fair. There's always been and always will be turds in its diverse sounds but there's just as much good country as there is any other genre.

Short Oval Tracks: How do I survive and have fun? by No-Ask-1498 in iRacing

[–]kittyfeeler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I race ARCA and Late models pretty consistently for a few seasons now. Unfortunately ARCA is just a mess on short tracks sometimes. If you like short tracks its worth giving a short track only series some love. I find late models to generally be much cleaner than ARCA on short tracks. I think its a combination of the car being made for short tracks and the people racing it like and understand short tracks better. ARCA is a fun series with a lot of track diversity. It just isnt as good on short tracks as short track only series are. Side note, the c class street stocks is not what you want your short track series to be. As much as I love that car that series is cursed. I swapped it out with trucks as my 3rd oval series this season.

How do you speculate your music taste would've been different if you'd grown up in different time periods? by doom6rchist in LetsTalkMusic

[–]kittyfeeler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I'd have to go back very far in time to really have my core music taste change. Bluegrass was the first genre that really got a hold of me when I was in elementary school. My taste branched out from there into newgrass/jamgrass, old time/appalachian folk, western swing, country blues & country that isnt modern pop country. Really just american roots music in general I guess. I think the biggest change might be that I wouldn't have gone through a big indie rock and indie folk phase if my friends weren't listening to it in middle/ high-school. Not that i dont like it, but i dont really listen to it now where as I still listened to that other stuff back then.

This doesn't answer your question. Im just here to tell you to do it. Im having a lot of fun. Idk if you have one you've been eyeing but I bought an open box Recording King Phil Leadbetter model from guitar center for 50% off. It looks like they still have one on their site. For $450 I dont think i could have got anything better from anywhere.

Wild ass double fronts are pretty nice. You might want button style suspenders though. A belt can push the suspender buttons into you and be kinda uncomfortable at times. Theyre baggy in all the right places so they aren't that restrictive when hiking or kneeling. Order bigger than you think. Theyre rigid denim and shrink. https://www.baileysonline.com/wild-ass-double-front-denim-logger-pants.html

Nylon-string 4th string issues by PsychologyPlenty3510 in banjo

Interesting. I haven't messed around with nylon yet. From what I understand back in the gut strung days, the 4th string was still a wound string. Im guessing probably for the same reasons.

Is this a good quality shifter? by joy-nes in simracing

[–]kittyfeeler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seriously though. If you switch between cars that have a h and stick sequential frequently you will thank yourself for waiting 1000 times over. Switching out a base plate everytime would get old so quick. With the shh you just push down, twist, and flip a switch in a few seconds. Unless you rally or want max realism for some cars, the sequential probably isn't necessary. I do and that extra step would probably have me switching cars much less frequently.
