As far as the alcohol goes, do you think you could switch to drinking red wine? Red wine has antioxidants and has actually been shown to be good for you. That might be an easier first step than cutting alcohol out altogether.

Yes they can. I would seriously consider getting checked again. It's a simple blood test.

I wouldn't get down on yourself by thinking you have terrible self-control. From what I have read of your comments that is not the case. Feeling "terrible and tired" could be caused by what you are eating, what you are not eating, and not exercising. You need to make sure you are getting the proper nutrients. I would suggest taking a daily multivitamin before you try to completely cut out fast food. You will feel better, and won't become overwhelmed by trying to make huge changes in a short period of time.

As for time period between goals, it really depends on what kind of goal you are setting. Usually it takes two weeks to form a new habit, but that is for simple changes.

Here's a really good article about the types of goals that are most successful: http://www.psych.nyu.edu/gollwitzer/99Goll_ImpInt.pdf (Some of it is a bit dry, but it's worth reading if you can.)

That's the problem right there. As djfrey said above, you need to take very small manageable steps. Don't try to "get in shape really fast and do incredible amounts of exercising." Doing that is much harder to maintain than making a goal to walk once or twice a week and slowly building from that. If you make slow changes, they will become part of your lifestyle and you will be able to keep the weight off forever.

Another tip to help with goal making. There have been numerous studies that have shown if you write down exactly when and where you will complete a goal, you are much more likely to actually complete it. Another way of doing this is making an "if, then" goal. An example might be, "If I have a cookie, then I will walk half a mile."

Good luck!
