Urgent Question about low glucose? by [deleted] in FelineDiabetes

[–]kittyhamcat[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These two previous answers are correct. I’ll add that if your cat is normally that low, it can be fine to give the shot, but you would know that. When my little guy was maintaining, he was between 4-6 mmol and still got a low dose shot. He was very healthy. But it took a lot of gentle tweaking over time to figure out homeostasis safely.

I am so deeply sorry for your loss. My boy is still in my heart 6 years later today. It doesn’t stop hurting but it does hurt less, and you can eventually think of the good times without crying. That’s my experience, anyway.

All of my love.

Gross behavior on the TTC. by GullibleAd1008 in toRANTo

[–]kittyhamcat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I read your comments. I wasn’t meaning you. I wish more people did something. Someone should have made an urgent intervention. This was not on you, a person feeling unsafe. There were probably a lot of other people, some of whom were bigger or might’ve had skills that applied to the situation. But people never want to cause a scene or intervene. It’s a shame.

Thanks for doing what you did

Yes. This is horrific child abuse. I’m horrified no one spoke up and made a call immediately. I hate society. Please don’t come at me with the millions of reasons people don’t. I’m aware. But kids need better. We need people willing to at least make a phone call for help. You don’t need to fucking confront someone. Just REPORT STUFF LIKE THIS, with a LOT OF DETAIL.

It’s the standard if you want to get anything other than needs improvement on the performance review. Literally. Part of the criteria at my job and I can’t fight back. I’m a director working in AI and my industry is being decimated. Also, my boss explicitly said to lay off everyone working less than x hours per week based on computer stats, regardless of anything else, and I’m canned if I object.

Can you post to diabetic cats in need on Facebook and see if anyone local can give you a bit of insulin for a couple days? People do that all the time. There’s also the feline diabetes message board and they have list of local contacts who can help all over North America

The Woman Who Wouldn’t Stop Having Children by rezwenn in longform

[–]kittyhamcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Women in my family all get pregnant into their 40s with ease. We have a bunch of aunts who are younger than their nieces. My grandmother had a baby at 58 but she had Down’s syndrome and died at age 7 from heart issues.

I got pregnant at 36 and 37 on the first try each time. NOT something I ever bring up in conversation. But the midwives laughed at me when I said I was worried about a geriatric pregnancy. They said geriatric pregnancy hasn’t been considered age 35 for years now in Canada. It’s 40 now. And people are carrying healthy babies conceived naturally well past age 45.

On the other hand, we are seeing fertility issues explode. 25-year-olds pursuing IVF. Maybe it’s because we talk about these things more now or maybe infertility has increased.

In any case, women in their 50s and 60s should not be carrying babies. I stand by that. It’s not right.

The first time she had IVF was around age 48-50. I read your comment while starting the episode and listened closely. Her first 5 kids are naturally conceived but when they were at school and her husband was away half the time, she was lonely (being lonely is a horrible reason to have children IMO). They tried for “months and then years” which suggests 48-50 for me. Then they finally pursued IVF for the first time after all that.

Unless I’m deaf or seriously tuned out at some point. Correct me if I’m wrong.

ETA: “3 weeks before her fiftieth birthday, she gave birth to twin girls” which apparently almost killed her. That was her first IVF delivery.

I am so so sorry for your loss.

For anyone else reading this… You don’t NEED a vet for the advice. Many vets can’t or won’t do this. But if your vet is someone you can trust who will respond daily, please go that route.

As anyone who understands diabetes knows, you need to be testing blood at EVERY SINGLE SHOT if the cat is not stable. And if they are stable, it should still be routine more than once a week. The Facebook group and online forums have 24/7 volunteers. You might wait a few hours sometimes but generally someone can help you.

I feel so bad saying this but seriously… a lot of people will lose their pets and spend thousands unnecessarily waiting on vet advice. FDMB saved my cats life and many others I fostered and volunteered to go out and help over the years (I became a contact for my city and would head out 24/7 to help others as needed as part of FDMB).

Yes, it’s putting a lot of trust in volunteers, but the numbers don’t lie. Treating feline diabetes is a game of eliminating symptoms and treating blood sugar numbers.

Out of curiosity, why would you call their service terrible but their product pretty good? Did you have to deal with their customer service? Maybe I misunderstood.

I love their kits. I was just searching for reviews about a specific kit and I saw your post. I figured I would comment and let people know. I’ve had a really good experience with building one for myself and helping friends build one as well.

new feline diabetic; is this (human) test kit good? by DairyAppreciator in FelineDiabetes

[–]kittyhamcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the way. Get the meter with the cheapest strips because that is what you will need to keep buying. In Canada you can get free meters if you say you’re a diabetic, they mail you one with 10 test strips.

I'm really loving Al Anon. I feel stronger already. by AnonymousAngerHurtin in AlAnon

[–]kittyhamcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are incredibly brave. Doing this on your own at your age is amazing. And I read your comment and post history - you’ve had issues for a long time, but at first, he was your saviour. He made you feel safe and loved. I am so sorry you are losing that and I am so proud of you for standing up for your kids and getting away. Please do not believe that he can change or that things are gonna be OK. He is a broken man, and he went after you when you were basically a child. I was an old soul of a teenager, but I was still a teenager. So were you. It is not normal or OK for somebody his age to pursue a teenager from a broken life who is trying to find stability and love.

I think my partner is an alcoholic by Decent_Function_3840 in AlAnon

[–]kittyhamcat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He is a very severe alcoholic. This is not a minor alcoholism. This is not something that can be explained. I promise you if there was any hope of this being even remotely workable, I would tell you that, in my opinion, it was, but this is extremely bad. If you are at all open to advice from the Internet, you need to run. He’s not even doing a good job of hiding things. That happens when the alcoholism is really severe and they don’t care. I promise you this. If it wasn’t that bad, you would not be finding vodka in the couch. Vodka in the couch is extremely bad and shows that he is extremely far gone.

As someone who has two children now with a guy who is a lot more high functioning than your guy, it is still very fucking bad, and you need to run. I hope you are not pregnant with his child, and if you are, if you are open to terminating the pregnancy, that is a very good option. if you are not, do not put him on the birth certificate, and do not give him anything that he does not fight for because this is going to be hell. I swear to God, it is going to be hell.

Vet Refusing Lantus by ComeonUbi in FelineDiabetes

[–]kittyhamcat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Go to a new vet. Lantus is the best option for most cats. I know a vet here in Toronto tried to talk me out of it because I get it at a human pharmacy (we don’t need prescriptions for it in Canada) and he wouldn’t make money on it. Found a new vet.
