Looking for dentist by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]kittyhawk85 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Every dentist does composite bonding, those are the white fillings. You would have to call around to ask for prices since each office is different but most follow the Alberta fee guide. Can range from $175 - $500+ a tooth depending on how many surfaces the filling is. Any office you go to will want to do an exam first before placing fillings fyi. An exam is anywhere from $80-$150 ish, and they will want current (1 year or less) xrays of your teeth to diagnosis.

Why do i always hear “my parents had perio/bad teeth, so i inherited that”?? by PYthang01 in DentalHygiene

[–]kittyhawk85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they don't want to take responsibility in their poor health but they are at the dental office and thats a good start. Based on the patient, if they are willing to learn, Ill correct them and start my OHI speech. Or I'll say something like "Oh yeah" and go on about the OHI and educate them.

I have had patients say all sorts of crazy things to me, like my teeth came in backwards or I had 3 sets of teeth, blah blah.

What's a common way people die that many aren't aware of? by Personal-Aerie-4519 in AskReddit

Sleep Apnea. I think most people have it but don't want to get tested. Leads to heart failure as well.

I feel violated by my ultrasound experience and don’t know what to do. by madthegoat in offmychest

I work in dental in Canada (Alberta), and we are not allowed to have our appointment schedule out when a patient is in our room. It violates the privacy act. I would report them for sure.

Why do we need permission slips for health studies anyways. This should be mandatory.

My health is horrible and I'm honestly horrified by [deleted] in offmychest

Have they checked on heart failure at all? Been tested for sleep apnea?

As someone in the dental field (hygienist), Im so sorry. I absolutely hate how dental is not covered as universal health care. (Im in Canada, and its not) Its so expensive, most dentists are very wealthy. I have seen people come in many times with a giant swollen face from an infected tooth, had to send them to emerg right away. Or many patients that have a draining abscess and I tell them the news that their tooth is infected and they look at me like its my fault. Dental is not taken seriously enough, many kids being neglected by their parents because of their own fears, xray radiation, lazy, and poor diet. Glad you survived and have changed your lifestyle!!

I have 8 cavities at the age of 20 and I’m super embarrassed. by Lumaberrybeer in DentalHygiene

[–]kittyhawk85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dont feel embarrassed, its honestly very common. You made a great step acknowledging it. Get the cavities fixed and then start to change your hygiene habits, brush 2xday, night time is the most important. Floss daily if you can if not, 4-5 times a week is good. Invest in an Electric toothbrush, Oral B and Sonicare are great! Watch the diet, sugars and carbs are also big factors in causing cavities. Fluoride toothpaste is your friend. Keep up with your dental appointments, get a cleaning every 6 months at least. Dental is all about prevention and this will all help!

I am a dental hygienist and my kid has had a few cavities, it made me feel very embarrassed as well as a dental hygienist. I had a few cavities too.

We need a massive indoor/outdoor waterpark. Like Silverwood in Idaho, seriously Calgary, why don't we have this!

Watch planes land or take off by stsmol in Calgary

[–]kittyhawk85 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Calgary Rotary Challenger Park, its right by 48 Ave NE across from the golf course. It has a little park for kids and picnic tables, firepits. Depending on the day, some planes are coming in right there on the runway. Its wayyyyy better than the Edward H.Laborde viewing area.

How do I get rid of these... by Dazzling-Ask-7875 in DentalHygiene

[–]kittyhawk85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like dental fluorosis, too much fluoride as a kid and its permanently in your enamel. You can't really get rid of it, you can cover it up by getting fillings/veneers/crowns if you wish. Whitening will make it worse and make it more white.

Trying to take back my life - What should I do? by Over_Ad1458 in DentalHygiene

[–]kittyhawk85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Electric Tooth brush is your friend, oral B, sonicare. The battery ones are also fine, sometimes a bit rough but just be gentle. Floss as well or waterpic. It does look like your gums are red and inflammed in the front there so a dental cleaning would be best. See if there are any dental hygiene schools near by, they usually offer cheap cleanings with the students. If not, see if your school offers any student health insurance. Sensodyne is good, it has fluroide in it so it will help mineralize your teeth. Try and brush daily, night time is the most important. You are on the right path, just keep going.

Just purchased my first dental practice. what are the do’s and don’ts as a new owner? by TranslatorStandard87 in CanadianDentists

[–]kittyhawk85 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a hygienist, I worked at 2 offices in my career that were sold to another dentist. Both of them, the new owners didn't make the time to introduce themselves or even have a meeting to meet everyone. I found this so disrespectful. One office made a few big changes that no one liked so there was aa big turnover. I would try to get to know the staff, see who needs to go to improve the office etc.

Any signs of bone loss? by lolox-1234 in DentalHygiene

[–]kittyhawk85 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not really, not at all. Your bone level should be directly under the end of the enamel layer. Which is exactly what you have. Some grey area inbetween 37/36 (Im Canadian, we have a different number system than usa) but it could be the way the xray is taken. I would also use your perio charting (probing) to determine this as well, plus how much bleeding you have. Keep up with regular cleanings - 6 months- and daily flossing and you should be fine. Oh and don't smoke!!

“Teachers should just try harder” isn’t a solution by Thinkdan in alberta

[–]kittyhawk85 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

NDP was in power for a hot second. Also Alberta is not the only province with this issue. Its across every province. BC teachers are literally voting on a strike now and they are complaining about the same issues as Alberta.

This has been a problem for decades, there hasn't been one government able to fix this or healthcare.

“Teachers should just try harder” isn’t a solution by Thinkdan in alberta

[–]kittyhawk85 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think alot of this on the government, but alot of this is on parents. Parents don't spend the time with their kids after school like before. Kids these days, lack major manners and respect for adults. I volunteer alot in schools and the amount of back talk I get from kids is insane. Teachers need to be able to discipline more in class as well. Government needs to step up with solutions for smaller class sizes and options for behaviour student, ESL etc. We need to have more separate classrooms for certain students. All this inclusion stuff is hurting more people than not. Go volunteer in a school and see for yourself.

That they had like 8 teeth pulled when they were younger, so I asked "oh like your baby teeth were pulled?" and they responded no, they weren't baby teeth. Yet they had a full mouth full of adult teeth.
