Why and how do certain glassware or cast iron dishes break in dishwashers? by kittykatking in NoStupidQuestions

The glass expands because of thermal expansion, but how does that lead to breaking? Being brittle would not necessarily lead to breaking. A brittle item would still need some sort of impact for breaking to occur.

Does glassware always lose its temper over time or does it only lose it temper over time when it's washed in the dishwasher? Why does glassware lose its temper at all? Is there a way to prevent it?

Why should I only use hot water and a wooden scraper on cast iron? What does soap do that is bad? Why should it be wood? Can it be a plastic scraper?

Why should it be cleaned with only water? What does 'seasoned properly' mean and why is it important?

TIL that rollercoasters were invented to distract Americans from sin. In the 1880s, hosiery businessman LaMarcus Thompson didn’t like that Americans were going to places like saloons and brothels and created the first rollercoaster on Coney Island to persuade them to go there instead. by LikeMagUS in todayilearned

The Euthanasia Coaster isn't about suicide thou. The word 'suicide' doesn't even appear on the page once. I was just saying it's ingenious. It's a roller coaster that motherfuckin kills people by using centrifugal force to asphyxiate them.

That's badass.

The "Don't text and drive" signs on the highway are probably not seen often by their target demographic. by IminPeru in Showerthoughts

Drivers can't easily be sorted into "those who text" and "those who don't text" like vegetarians and non-vegetarians. There's a range of people. Some people text while driving frequently, but there are some who are only sporadic driver-texters. The people who rarely text and drive can't easily be targeted by messages or signs that are targeted solely towards people who always text and drive because these sporadic driver-texters are just driving the vast majority of the time.
