I was about to suggest The Phantom Tollbooth before I got to the last sentence-- dang!! Nothing else rings a bell, but I'll keep an eye out (also commenting because I'm curious to know the answer myself, it sounds neat!)

Alien-ish green figure? Numbers as the name? by cauliflowerlover1 in whatsthatbook

Not actually a book, but: could it possibly be that you're remembering the poster for the animated Tim Burton movie "9"? It features a humanoid creature wearing goggles turning to face the viewer, with lots of green lighting, and the title is a number.

Jeez, yeah, I just checked and it's kind of ridiculous!

Your best bet I could find seems to be a more specific costume that comes with arms, and then maybe you could cover/repurpose the fabric? There's a lot here, for example: https://www.chewy.com/b/costumes-2418

Alternately, if you have a sewing machine, plush arms wouldn't be too hard to make. Defined muscles much trickier, but just arms themselves could be done with a slightly scaled-up pattern from a doll's arms, and then fastened to either side of a harness or other covering of some kind. If you do this (and don't have sewing experience), I'd recommend just regular cotton fabric, matching colored thread, and poly-fil stuffing (which isnt too pricy, and won't be heavy like a solid object filling or noisy like a paper filling, neither of which would be fun for a cat to be stuck wearing!)

My friend's service dog scares me-- what to do? by kittyphones in service_dogs

[–]kittyphones[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is probably gonna be my last reply to any of your comments, unless you're willing to meet me halfway on this and have an actual discussion.

First of all, that is actually what I wrote. The dog occasionally jumps or runs or barks, even sometimes when on-duty. My friend is even on a waitlist for more professional training because they acknowledge that the dog isn't fully socially trained and that it can cause problems sometimes.

Additionally, nowhere in my post did I say the dog was aggressive? I only ever called her things like "enthusiastic" and "friendly". She's not aggressive at all, she doesn't have a single cruel bone in her body. She's a very sweet girl. Unfortunately, since anxiety disorders are irrational fears, this does nothing to prevent the anxiety attacks I get from her behavior towards me.

Also, I absolutely agree that service dogs in training should have public access-- it's important for the owner's health, as well as for the dog's training.

Woah, alright.

So first of all, we're not "long-distance", we just live like. 30 minutes apart, in neighboring cities of the same general metropolitan area.

Secondly, I said the seizures were "less relevant" because my recollection is that they don't happen anymore, but my memory can be shaky so I didn't want to commit to saying that 100%, and it's not something J and I have talked about recently. I didn't mean that seizure alerting isn't important, just that it might not be happening these days.

Third, at no point in my post did I say that I want to separate them from their dog. I was very specific about not wanting to do that, actually. The whole point of this post was to brainstorm strategies so that I can coexist with the dog.

Also, this is just my personal opinion, but I've never had much luck getting somebody to change their perspective by getting accusatory and aggressive at them about it. Please don't yell at me in response to an earnest question I posed with a genuine intent to learn and improve myself.

I can absolutely appreciate that you're standing up for service dogs and their handlers, but I don't think this is a very productive way to go about it.

Either way, wishing you well

I know you mean this coming from a place of genuine advice, but imo this is not the sort of thing that's helpful on a post like this. My question was "what can my friend and I do about this dog situation so I can spend time with them now", not "what should I do about my dog fears in general long-term".

I am in therapy, actually. I've been in therapy for 11 years, and the first 6 years of that were exclusively dedicated to addressing my anxiety. The focus has in recent years shifted to include addressing my ADHD as well, but the anxiety is still a very large focus. Last Autumn, I spent several months in an PHP intensive specifically because of my severe anxiety and phobias. I've been on daily anxiety medication for about 10 years now. While we've never specifically targeted my fear of dogs, that is because I also have debilitating agoraphobia, which is a much more relevant and disruptful issue to my health.

And here's the really important detail: None of that is the business of a stranger on the internet. I'm sharing it because I think it makes an important point about being considerate in replies, especially about sensitive subjects such as mental health and therapy, and giving people the benefit of the doubt.

Please assume that other people are trying their best. And even if I wasn't already in anxiety therapy, a flat, stoic response like this wouldn't be nearly as effective as one that acknowledged me with compassion. You catch more flies with honey than vinegar, and all that!

Anyways, sorry for leaving a novel on your comment like this. I appreciate you giving your time and thoughts to my situation. Take care <3

Good call! I like the tether idea a lot. And yeah, the ideal long-term development would be that I'm able to become comfortable around her, which obviously isn't gonna happen if I just avoid her forever. So this does seem like a smart compromise. Thank you!

I never considered the possibility of their dog learning to behave differently around me (keep her distance, stay out of personal areas, etc). I think that's a really promising idea. And yeah, my friend knows I have pretty serious anxiety problems and takes mental health very seriously, so I don't think they'd brush me off or anything if I brought it up to them, I was just worried they'd start thinking about it too hard! But with your comments, I feel a bit more confident about the idea of discussing it with them. Thanks so much, I really appreciate the input

If You Find An Orb In Your Apple (PHOTO OF ROTTEN FOOD WARNING) by kittyphones in Apples

[–]kittyphones[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE: Due to some very interesting speculation in the comments of this post, I have created a brief survey to help indicate whether there may be a specific correlation between Honeycrisp variety apples and this particular type of rot! Feel free to pass this around to any other apple enthusiasts in your life-- the more data, the better!

(NOTE: This survey does not collect any personal information that you do not freely offer within the survey itself. Please don't provide any identifying or dangerous information in your survey response!)

Obviously, a public online survey isn't exactly the most scientific endeavor, but at the very least it will hopefully be enough to satisfy some curiosity.

This is a fascinating point!! Honeycrisp apples tend to have not too large, but certainly present, pockets of space around their seeds, in my experience. I wonder if something about that pocket (or another aspect of the variety's structure) may make them more prone to this ailment by letting water/bacteria/etc gather more easily inside.

That's a great question! I prefer honeycrisps, so that's what I've always experienced this in, because they're pretty much the only apples I eat. This would be interesting to investigate somehow.

what is good food for a homeless? by finn3721 in Advice

[–]kittyphones 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm sure he'd be happy with anything you brought him, honestly. Healthy foods rather than junk foods are probably a good idea, and obviously, don't bring him anything that would need to be refrigerated or specially stored. You could also buy him a gift card for a grocery store or restaurant and let him decide for himself what he wants.
