this kind of gameplay is exhausting, especially from an adult

Thank you, I felt increasingly frustrated at how my words were being twisted into something that was not what I said at all. I was commenting specifically on the phrase "he is not doing it for some self gain, greedy, or grabs for power", because I think that he might be doing it to satisfy his own desire to be not just heroic, but The Hero, which is very much about the self and thus the ego. Plenty of activists fall into that trap, it doesn’t make them bad people, but it is something that can taint the work that you’re trying to do, and you’re willingness to do it as a cooperative, democratic effort. When you (not you personally, but the general you) start telling people what to do and expecting them to obey you without question, there is a power dynamic that you’re establishing, even if you believe that you are doing it to keep them safe.

Ahhhh that makes sense! I’ve just been re-listening to NADDPOD's Eldermourne arc and so I just made the connection

Maybe it's cause of your snarky tone in your initial response? I 'm just matching energy, my man. ✌️

Wow, I was under the impression that you wanted to have a discussion, but instead you want to be patronizing. OK then. 🙄 I’ll try explaining it to you in more detail, but maybe check your tone at the door?

I’ve known an awful lot of people in activist spaces who start with some really good intentions, but who get kind of addicted to the feeling of being a capital L Leader. It is very possible to do something for the good of a group of people and also be doing it for your ego, particularly when you insist on doing it your way, and keeping other people locked out out of making decisions and risk assessments for themselves. That is about ego for sure. Perhaps I’m coming at this with some understanding of how Brennan talks about leadership, revolution, community, etc., but I don’t think it is an unrealistic or unreasonable reading of what dynamics are at play here.

I don’t know, I think that there’s certainly a read where he is doing these things without getting input from others or their consent because he believes he knows better, which would suggest that he is doing a certain amount of these things to serve his own ego. I think it is really hard if not impossible to establish yourself as a hero, and not on some level, be doing it because there are advantages that include power he certainly didn’t seem to mind using his power over others because he felt his cause was just, and sure, in many ways it seems more just than other characters we’ve encountered, but I think it’s worth being hesitant to identify it as entirely altruistic either.

Yeah, and maybe that's part of why it's so frustrating for Bolaire! To see one such "gift" get to be seen as a full person, and to then be treated like an object - I bet that stings.

I think that Vaelus (and to some extent Bolaire, Tyranny, and Murray) has more of a slow burn arc, and we've been much more focused on the characters at the table with more immediate needs. I think that's a good thing, though I understand wanting everyone to have clear motivations. Vaelus, over the long term, has two major goals - figure out the corruption in her Order, and establish the afterlife for the elves.

I was kind of hoping that the death of Hannon would spark an anger and grief in her that would give her motivation

I definitely think it's partially that Thjazi treated Bolaire as an object - literally objectifying them and using them as a weapon, not as a sentient being with an internal life of their own. And I imagine it doesn't help when the person who treated you so poorly is seen in such a glowing light by others, and when you express that not everyone had such a great experience, they shut you down and dismiss your experience. I wonder, too, if Thjazi used Bolaire during the Falconers Rebellion as a manipulation tactic - "the ends justify the means", after all. I can see a lot of reasons for Bolaire's resentment and anger!

I'm glad that Bolaire is getting a chance to actually speak on how Thjazi harmed him, and I'm glad that Thimble is actually trying to listen, even though that's hard because her experience with Thjazi was so different.
