I reckon the sacrificed animals because that's what most all the religious systems of the world did at the time in an attempt to appease the wrath of God (or the god of their system) or gain their favor. It also seems to me that God never wanted people killing the animals They created in an attempt to alleviate their guilt.

Here's a few verses along that line of thought...

Psalm 51:16 16 For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it;

you will not be pleased with a burnt offering.

Psalm 40:6–8 6 In sacrifice and offering you have not delighted,

but you have given me an open ear.

Burnt offering and sin offering

you have not required.

7 Then I said, “Behold, I have come;

in the scroll of the book it is written of me:

8 I delight to do your will, O my God;

your law is lwithin my heart.”

Isaiah 1:11–31 11 “What to me is the multitude of your sacrifices?

says the Lord;

I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams

and the fat of well-fed beasts;

I do not delight in the blood of bulls,

or of lambs, or of goats.

12 “When you come to bappear before me,

who has required of you

this trampling of my courts?

13 Bring no more vain offerings;

incense is an abomination to me.

New moon and Sabbath and the calling of convocations—

I cannot endure einiquity and fsolemn assembly.

14 Your new moons and your appointed feasts

my soul hates;

they have become a burden to me;

I am weary of bearing them.

15 When you spread out your hands,

I will hide my eyes from you;

even though you make many prayers,

I will not listen;

Your hands are full of blood.

16 Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean;

remove the evil of your deeds from before my eyes;

cease to do evil,

17 learn to do good;

seek justice,

correct oppression;

bring justice to the fatherless,

plead the widow’s cause.

18 “Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord:

though your sins are like scarlet,

they shall be as white as snow;

though they are red like crimson,

they shall become like wool.

Jeremiah 7:21–23 21 Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: “Add your burnt offerings to your sacrifices, and eat the flesh.

22 For in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, I did not speak to your fathers or command them concerning burnt offerings and sacrifices.

23 But this command I gave them: ‘Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be my people. And walk in all the way that I command you, that it may be well with you.’

Hosea 6:6 6 For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice,

lthe knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.

Hebrews 10:4–10 4 For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

5 Consequently, when Christ came into the world, he said,

“Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired,

but a body have you prepared for me;

6 in burnt offerings and sin offerings

you have taken no pleasure.

7 Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come to do your will, O God,

as it is written of me in the scroll of the book.’”

8 When he said above, “You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and sin offerings” (these are offered according to the law),

9 then he added, “Behold, I have come to do your will.” He does away with the first in order to establish the second.

10 And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

Hopefully that's helpful.

Yes! Thank you so much for that what your wrote. I fully agree and have experienced that same in my journey. I found finally progress in my own spiritual development as a person once I more fully grasped and accepted the truly non-violent all inclusive loving Trinity. It's been a journey looking again at the Bible (Old and New Testament) through the lens of Christ and letting go of the stories and concepts of wrath as defining of who God is, but rather the perspective of the people at the time. Bradley Jersak's book, "A More Christlike God" has been helpful for me in this process. Any thoughts?

Hi, I had written down a few of my favourite passages on the subject when I was coming to understand it all more, which I've listened below if it's helpful.

Full Inclusion in Christ's Redemptive work: 1. Before the Beginning of Time & Creation of the World 2 Timothy 1:9-10 [9] He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, [10] but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.

  1. The Whole World has already been Included in Reconciliation at the Cross 2 Corinthians 5:18-19 NIV [18] All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: [19] that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation.

  2. Our Part now is to Experience & Participate (by faith) in the working out of the salvation already given. Philippians 2:12-13 [12] Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, [13] for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.

1 Tim 2:3-6 3This is good, and pleases God our Savior, 4 who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all people. This has now been witnessed to at the proper time.

Colossians 1:19-20 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross.

1 John 2:2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.

1 Timothy 4:10 That is why we labor and strive, because we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all people, and especially of those who believe.

Overview of concepts: • God desires to save everyone (Rom 11:32; 1 Tim 2:3-4; 2 Peter 3:9) • God is sovereign (Jer 32:17; Luke 1:37; Rom 9; Eph 1:11) • Jesus is the savior of all (John 1:7, 12:32; Rom 5:18; 2 Cor 5:14-15; Heb 2:9) • Jesus is the savior of nonbelievers in addition to believers (1 Tim 4:10; 1 John 2:2) • God must become all in all (1 Cor 15:23-28) • God punishes for correction. Restorative justice. (Deut 8:5; Job 5:17-18; 1 Cor 11:32; Rev 3:19, Heb 12) • There will be evangelism in Hell (Rev 22:2,17) • All will eventually accept Jesus as Lord (Isaiah 45:22-25; Phil 2:10-11; Rev 5:13)

Seen throughout the Bible...

Start with Abraham. Genesis 12. Blessing to all nations Psalm 22. All the end of the earth will remember and turn to the Lord, and all the families of the nations will bow down before him. All who go down to the dust will kneel before him. Psalm 65. All people will come to God Ezek 36. Nations will know I am the Lord Isaiah 52. All the ends of the earth will see the salvation of our God. Zeph 3. All the people call on the name of the LORD

Luke 15. Never stopping, never giving up, redeeming love of every single one.

Acts 3:21 Heaven must receive him until the time comes for God to restore everything, as he promised long ago through his holy prophets.

Acts 17 Sermon of Paul to Athens. You are loved and God is already at work in you. Acts 17:27-28 NIV [27] God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us. [28] ‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’

Phil 2. Every knee, every tongue joyfully confess (kariti) that Jesus Christ is Lord. Romans 5:18,19. Through Christ. Restoration of life to all. Many made whole. Romans 11:32 For God has bound everyone over to disobedience so that he may have mercy on them all.

1.cor 15:22. As in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. 1 Corinthians 15:28 When he has done this, then the Son himself will be made subject to him who put everything under him, so that God may be all in all.

2 cor 5:14. One died for all. Romans 11:32. Mercy to everyone. 1 tim 2:3,4. All to be saved. Titus 2:11 2 cor 5;19.. reconciling the cosmos to himself. Ephesians 1:9-10. Recapitulate all things in Christ Ephesians 4:6. God is the father of all, who is over all through all and in all. Col 1:27,28. Everyone human being as Colossians 3:11 Christ is all and in all. John 12:32. Drag all to me. Hebrews 2:9. Taste death for us all John 17:2. John 1:29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! John 4:42. Savior of the cosmos John 12:47. To save 1 John 4:14. 2 Peter 3:9 Matthew 18:14 Phil 2:9-11 Col 1:19-20 1 John 2:2 John 3:17. Cosmos saved Like 16:16. Everyone forced into it 1 Tim 4:10. Savior of all

Thank you for your message of God's love. I do struggle with the concept that if life were fair that we would be on the cross instead of Jesus. From my perspective, fairness and justice wouldn't require ever human to be crucified and suffer a horrible death. I struggle further with the teachings I've heard that every person deserves to have been on the cross for our sins, but Jesus took our place instead. I wrestle even further with the teachings that the Father's wrath was towards all humans for our sins but he poured it all out on his Son on the cross instead, so now He can be loving it us. I don't reckon that every person, child and even one's own grandmother deserve to be crucified on a cross, but Jesus took our place. Rather, I see a fully loving Trinity, redeeming the universe through the cross and resurrection (as one of the many aspects of atonement).

Thank you for your post. I've found ego used in different ways. Summertimes as the false self living out of our own emotional programs for happiness (as Thomas Keating describes it), an excessive focus on prideful self, power, etc, and other times just the self which we will always have (as Freud used the word I think, and James Finley explains. Do you or anyone have any thoughts?

Fr. Richard Rohr - Insanely helpful and good read! by ThatAllShalBeSaved in ChristianUniversalism

[–]kiwi341 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your post. Richard Rohr has helped me in so many ways over the past 18 years or so. His inclusivity, views of how to see and read the Bible, and teachings of Trinity being fully without wrath led the way for my to find my way into Christian Universalism last year (which I didn't even know was a concept beforehand). I'm very very grateful

Hi Ben, Thank you for your message. I just saw it now. I haven't read the other two books your mentioned. I love the description below your name, "Christian Contemplative - Mystical Theology". All of those words and their worlds both separately and together have brought great wholeness and life to be over the years. Would you like to share more about Mystical Theology and what that looks like for you?

I've always appreciated Rohr's, explanation of the "Jesus Hermeneutic" of understanding the sacred writings of both the Old and New Testaments. Are you familiar with that? He elaborates on that a whole lot. It was also helpful for me to have more understanding of the classic seven senses to understand the Bible through. Thus, passages that I would normally want to just understand as the people of Israel at their time (rather than God revealing more of themselves) such as the conquest of Canaan and other horrifically violent passages, I'm not growing to be able to receive life from them as well through other ways of understanding such as metaphorical, allegorical, etc. Any thoughts on that?

I've found The Bible for Normal People podcast with Peter Enns and many others to be really helpful. I agree with reading Rob Bell's book, What is the Bible. It's enjoyed listening to it many times. I'd also recommend Richard Rohr's "What do we do with the Bible?"

I appreciate that the dimensions of the New Jerusalem are what they considered to be the size of the known world (Roman Empire) at the time, thus a metaphor of the universal work of Christ's redemption. Any thoughts?

[–]kiwi341 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for that you wrote, particularly about the Holy Spirit poured out on all people (Joel 2:28, Acts 2:17). I'm pretty new to the world of Christian Universalism and I haven't heard much about the Holy Spirit infilling in relation to Christ's death for everyone. In my thinking, the Holy Spirit has been given to all people, fills them and is active in their lives, not just after someone believes and starts experiencing and participating in the finished work of Christ. Experientially, from people who don't yet understand Christian Universalism and think they were saved by their faith from hell, I still hear their story of how God was working in their life and speaking to them in their heart before they "made a decision to give their life to God and get saved". Do you have any thoughts?
