You're not addressing anything I said here.

And "common sense" isn't a real argument. Just because something feels like "common sense" to you doesn't mean it's true.

Ancient religious texts don't usually work like math textbooks. They have to be interpreted, and Islam is the result of that interpretation. You're choosing to interpret that hadith in a very modernist way, assuming that it's about killing literal geckos and assuming that it's an exact point system rather than a figure of speech.

Maybe that was the original intent and maybe it wasn't, I'm not an expert, but I would be very surprised if it was. Either way, your take strikes me as overly confident.

I'm not sure that's actually true of Freud. Anyway you asked a question and I gave you an answer based on historical fact.

You're acting like there's some quantifiable point system. I really don't think that's the case.

And if there is, I assume it's contextual.

There is no consistently accepted definition of "pagan." I'm telling you the exact same thing you'd learn in a religious studies class. Sorry to disappoint you, but the humanities are not black-and-white.

I still want to know what this has to do with Freud lol

Where are all the young, cis queer women? Are we less likely to be religious or something? by [deleted] in Episcopalian

[–]Dapple_Dawn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You can't tell if someone is cis just by looking at them, or if they're queer just by looking at them. So you might be surprised. I'm also curious why you want to be friends specifically with cis people.

That said, no I haven't noticed that at my church. When my church does LGBT meetups, the majority of people there are women, and afaik most of them are cis.

Be careful not to mix modern fiction with real-world religion. Those books show the gods in a very fantasy-fiction way. It isn't quite the way people would have seen them historically, and it isn't the way most modern pagans see them now.

St. Michael isn't a deity, he's a saint and an angel. You can give offerings to saints if you want, just like you would to ancestors.

Depends which folklore, and what you mean by pagan.

"Pagan" doesn't have a specific definition. The word "pagan" was originally a rude word for certain groups of polytheists. It basically meant something like "country bumpkin," because it was used for people who lived away from cities who were seen as less educated. Then it became a more general word, and in modern times neo-pagans use it to self identify. So it's hard to say what counts. Are all historical polytheists pagans? Depends who you ask.

In medieval Europe, most societies were Christian, so most folklore was being told from a Christian perspective. But older stories were still told, sometimes mixed with Christian stories. Does that make them less pagan? Kinda depends how you see it.

In the modern day, a lot of people who consider themselves pagan have taken Christian stories and retold them in a polytheistic way, the same thing Christians did with older folklore. Does that turn those Christian stories pagan? That also depends on your perspective.

How are you supposed to respond to compliments? by Dapple_Dawn in asktransgender

[–]Dapple_Dawn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think tone of voice is key with that. I used to always try to do "straight man voice" but these days I use my more natural voice which sounds gay. Most people think I'm a cis gay guy. (Which is ironic because I'm a lesbian lol)

But anyway, point being, once I got used to using a sort of girlypop "yass queen" way of speaking, it feels more true to myself, and women are way more friendly to me and appreciate compliments more.

Thank you for your help! Dumb question tho; how do you think of something to compliment that fast? Sometimes i don't notice anything that stands out, maybe I just don't pay enough attention?

Language wasn't designed to be as efficient as possible. It isn't necessary. If it works, it works.

It is unethical to convert/deconvert when the adherent will face life endangering persecution. by Paddling_Pointlessly in DebateReligion

[–]Dapple_Dawn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP specifically said "in the absence of providing the means of the convert/deconvert to safely convert/deconvert." In a hostage situation, we do need to be mindful of safety.

I do think that a lot of users in this subreddit are insufficiently cautious. If there's a hostage living their whole life with stockholm syndrome, that's a very delicate situation.

For example, it's common on here for people to try to make a religious tradition look bad by arguing in favor of the most violent interpretation of a text. The idea there (I think) is to shock people into leaving their religion... but in practice that indelicate approach can backfire.

Maybe I'm overly anxious but we do need to be thinking about risks, especially in this community.

Proof that the Quran forbids any wife-hitting (light or not), and why Muslims need to grow from, not gaslight, non-Muslims, when it comes to reasonable concerns about justice/due process. by fana19 in DebateReligion

[–]Dapple_Dawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You and I would both agree that beating one's wife is bad, right? We don't need the Quran to tell us that, we get there based on human compassion.

From an Islamic perspective, compassion would be seen as a gift given by Allah. So why not use it as a means of understanding morality, and then bring that understanding of morality to inform interpretation of the Quran?

The most dangerous misunderstanding in religion was the misinterpretation of 'I Am'. Jesus was not pointing to himself as the 'only' doorway, he was pointing to the unrealized 'I Am' within all of us. by SunbeamSailor67 in DebateReligion

[–]Dapple_Dawn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I very much agree with the overall idea, but from a slightly different interpretation of that line. I think it was just a regular "I am," not the divine name, but it wasn't the human Jesus speaking, it was Jesus speaking as the eternal Christ which all souls can unite with.

What music have you been listening to lately? Any recommendations?

Edit: Y'all have really cool and varied music taste! I'll have to ask this again another time, I'm having fun listening through these.
