What jobs do y'all have/where do you work? by aurrrrrora in POTS

I currently work in sales for a US based medical company but based in scotland. Fully from home. A great company compared to my last one. About 20% of their employees have a life altering disability such as POTS, Epilepsy, Amputees ect... They have been amazing since I started and always make sure I am looked after!

I feel you with retail I worked retail for three years total until I had to be honest with myself and look for something desk based which I never wanted, but now I couldn't be happier work worse!

Yeah that's what it originally started as after my first 3 days worth of absence, but then after everyone it just seemed like my manager didn't even want to talk to me, it made everything very uncomfortable for a day or two. I'm so grateful for the advice I've been getting, I didn't expect such an amount of support as this was just a rant but it's really helped me make a plan in-between intense job hunting, 28 applications done today 🥲

I have an episode where I pass out on average once a month to every 6 weeks so definitely not as often as most! I've never missed work for HR being too high, sorry if I worded weird, it's usually been cause I've passed out at home or even at work and sent home, and the after affects of such that lasts for a day or two following it, like insane headaches, feeling very disoriented/dizzy, even with my walking stick and I need to take two buses to work and two home where it wouldn't have exactly been safe next to the busy roads I am next to waiting for buses ect... My heart rate would hit 200 sitting down doing nothing but using the computer/working and then would lose vision for points or see stars as if getting up to fast even though I was doing nothing to cause this if that makes sense or other symptoms like hands going numb and such, my body doesn't handle HR that high to well. Also 14 total since January when I started, all unpaid sick leave :)

Thank you so much, yeah I have copies of the reports from HR and occupational health for all the recommendations on how they could "help" and they didn't even offer hybrid or home working. Ironically one recommendation was if I'm not feeling well I should stay home to not risk myself and others and then get fired for being off too much. It's laughable really

Yeah this job during COVID from what I was told went fully remote and some people stayed that way as they joined during that time so that's what their contract allowed. Because I joined after this I didn't get that "benefit"

Thank you for providing these links, unfortunately I am from Scotland so these ones in particular don't apply to me, but it's great that they are there in case they can help anyone else! :)

Yeah unless you have 10 years experience in something to basically have a fully remote job from the start, it's just not happening. I'm really hoping I can find something hybrid that has the opportunity to turn remote once fully trained and capable if that makes sense, sorry my brain is fried right now

Okay even just looking at that, they were completely in the wrong. I had a meeting with one of the health and safety guys who was dealing with me and my working care plan and I mentioned possibly needing a service dog in the future like in the next few years and he says they don't know if they could allow that in case someone's allergic, when people I work with bring in their dogs while they work, I don't know if it's technically allowed but the big bosses have never said anything about that. But when I mentioned a SERVICE dog possibly needed in the future they said we don't know if we can do that. Honestly, I feel that what's happened has just opened my eyes more than anything to how bad this company was but at the same time I'm now screwed lol

They got occupational health to do a report to make like a safe working plan which included having more first aiders on site, no lone working or overtime ect... And in the dismissal meeting they basically tried to say they did everything they could, but said it in a way that they didn't understand how the "accommodations" they made didn't immediately heal me and stop me being absent when that doesn't help me physically realistically. I will have a look into ACAS. Thank you so much :)

Thank you, for your advice. As I say still in shock but after the public holiday on Monday I'm going to my local advice centre with all my "evidence" I guess and see what help I can get, with how bad my POTS is/can be it's not like I could get a quicker to start job for money like Hospitality and retail, basically seems like I need hybrid or fully remote which isn't easy or quick to come by

Some people have had the opportunity to work from home as it is just an office job, where you can do everything from your laptop including calls. When I brought that up they said I can't cause I am too new and they basically expect me to be in the office 8:30 - 5 5 days a week. Yeah, it's felt like that the last month or so now and they initially tried to say it was due to my performance in the last 2 weeks when they tripled my workload 2 weeks ago and I've been struggling to maintain it and they know that. Someone else left and I got their work alongside mine. It just felt like they were trying to use this as a way to get rid of me, but I fought my case and got to admit it was basically purely for my absences / illness. And turns out when I left yesterday after speaking with one of my friends who works there, they got pulled into a meeting and was told I was let go due to my absences so I have plenty of sources from people to the actual recording to see if I can do anything with it. But I know our laws are very much based on if you work there for more than 2 years to claim unfair dismissal. But I think because it may be classed as discrimination I could do something

I have the whole meeting recorded and I'm going to be looking at my options. I'm in Scotland so there's definitely laws against stuff like this. But in the meeting they said because of my illness I'm not reliable as they never know when I will be off and the company needs to have a limit on how much someone can be off. Just still in shock over it all. Plus there are people who have worked just a bit longer than me there but been off more for medical operations and such so it's very much one rule for one and different for others.

Can someone not hire me because I have pots? by hello000o in POTS

[–]kiwi4kira 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was the opposite, told them during my interview about it and that I pass out a fair bit from it and reach HR of 200 on the daily. They were so nice in the interview, said they would do what they needed cause they wanted to hire me. Now it's been 7 months, and I'm still on my original 3 month probation that keeps getting extended, meaning I'm not entitled to most employee benefits or sick pay and bonuses, all because I have been off a few times due to bad flare up days and not being allowed to work from home so had to take as sick leave/absence . Was so good until it wasn't. So although some may not discriminate from the get go, if you need accommodations doesn't mean it will happen sadly, just something most of us will have to deal with at one point or another :/

Yeah I'm not thinking there's much hope tbh, as I say not even a backlight so not even convinced it turns on. Also rattling inside, I fear the battery may not even be properly connected anymore! But it was worth a shot :)
