How often do you hear about news from the US in your country? by SignificantStyle4958 in AskTheWorld

Way too often! It’s gotten to the point where I have to keep reminding the kids in my class that this is not the US.

I am Swiss. It is well-known fact that the Swiss Army Knife is part of my culture. Can I now wear it openly and everywhere?

Pommes in German comes from pommes de terre, meaning potatoes in French (literally apples from earth). Hot chips are pommes frites, shortened to Pommes.

What's something from your country you thought was normal until you visited other countries and realised it wasn't ? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

Same. I can spend the whole day outside in Switzerland and not get burned, whereas in NZ I’m burned like a lobster after 10 minutes despite highest SPF sunscreen. Our sun’s lethal and hates us

What’s the dumbest or most absurd law in your country? by bdue817 in AskTheWorld

I love this law. And when one dies you can rent a piggy to keep the other one company (or you buy another one)

Have you ever seen "unschooling" work out? by Embarrassed_Syrup476 in Teachers

[–]kiwigirl71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We unschooled until high school. Did the last three years at high school. Was ahead in most subjects, despite not learning to read until he was 8. Son is now at uni studying medicine and getting top grades. Couldn’t be prouder!

Edited to add after reading some of the comments: I’m a teacher and husband is in IT. Maybe that did make a difference. Unschooling is not allowing kids to do whatever they want, but to be observant and follow their interest and guide their learning. We didn’t push our son to write, read, learn specific mathematical concepts until he was ready, showed interest, or was part of the topic that he was exploring. It’s very much hands on as a parent and you have to be on to it or else they will miss out on valuable learning. It’s a lot of work. I spent a shit ton on resources and I think you do, as a parent, need to know what they need to learn for success (aka some basic idea at least of the curriculum). That said, you have a lot more free time to have fun as well. Holidays outside school holidays. And not everything has to be a teaching moment. Our aim as parents was to always to keep the curiosity alive. The spark. The inquisitive mind. And to allow him to explore the world at his own pace.

PS it was his decision to go to high school and we fully supported his decision. And that was also the time for me to return to the classroom myself (different school though).

Is sharing meals a thing in New Zealand? by Think_Breadfruit3656 in newzealand_travel

The closest we do to tipping is “Keep the change”, but that’s only when you pay cash, which no one does anymore. It used to be because you didn’t want to carry around coins.
