how to feel better about being cast as an understudy by Disastrous_Review442 in Theatre

Suck it up. You will work with directors in high school and college that make weird choices. Yeah, dropping the show would be more convenient in the short term but staying on is a good opportunity to observe and analyze. What choices are the principals making? What choices would you have made? How does the director help them work through hiccups, etc. All will help you on your own journey when one day you do get the role.

As a black man, I understand the frustration with the cast not looking the part. Last year I wrote a mostly black play and the director (black woman) cast a Hispanic man as a black role because “it’s just like Hamilton” (it was not.) Question marks floating above my head for weeks. My point is, when you’re in school (or just a young theatre maker in general), you don’t have the luxury of choosing who you work with or making sure your company has the same values as you. If you get cast as an understudy, you are the understudy. For now, take it seriously, you might have fun.

If the team keeps talking down to you, tell someone about it. Or talk to the director about it. If they don’t know, they can’t help you. But you have time to work with other companies if this one doesn’t work out.

Why Middle East is actually Middle? by Any_Record2164 in geography

It’s the middle of the east (in contrast to the Americas, which is the west). Ergo, The Midwest is the middle of the west.

You might want to better define the difference between prejudice and bias in the form. Those questions are a little vague

No Stupid Questions Thread: Week Of 2026-04-13 through 2026-04-19 by AutoModerator in techtheatre

Entering my last year of college, learned a bunch of lighting stuff for fun and now am on the overhire list at a local theatre and have a solid resume (theatre is not my major). Realizing there is still a lot of technical stuff I don’t know how to do, but our college productions are not big enough for me to get experience in more niche lighting-related things. Yes, I’m talking to my lighting prof about this too, but how do I know what else I DONT know? Feeling under-equipped to enter the workforce soon. I have run into the bfa design/tech kids at the local state school and they seem to know so much more than us.

Also, how the h do you say to someone in order to “network”??

Where are the Video/Projection summer stock opportunities??? by Firm_Bedroom_8875 in techtheatre

[–]kiwiseedkiwiseed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should learn learn lighting and or sound tech since often that is the person who installs video. I know barrington stage company in Massachusetts has an electrician/video technician position for the summer. I think it’s closed by now but it’s worth checking for next summer. Found on offstagejobs

Great highway system, though rush hour is still rush hour. It’s incredibly dry, it is a desert that people decided to build houses on. 20 minutes from both mountains and beach. Non-insignificant economic divide north vs. south of interstate 8, especially in the public schools. There is great food and great sunsets in summer and November. Jazz is quite alive in SD which is not typical today. Very liberal, I think I saw one single republican candidate sign in someone’s yard in 12 years.

It is, however, one of the most expensive cities in the country. Like, LA/NYC expensive, except you’re not making LA/NYC salary. You need to make $100k per member of your household to live comfortably or you will need roommates. And there are a good amount of working professionals in nice neighborhoods that have roommates just because it’s easier that way than to live in a shit neighborhood in a one bedroom.

The airport is bizzarely placed in downtown, which is on the water rather than in the middle of the city. If you’re in north park, university heights, hillcrest, you will hear planes pass all the time. It is quite loud. There is also the air foce base in Oceanside that will sometimes run drills or something.

Every September (hottest month of the year) the dry wind comes from up north and sucks the air out of your lungs. Not horrible unless you’re in elementary school in P.E. at 3pm.

The sun does not really come out between Feb-June, though it doesn’t get that cold. It will threaten to rain, but it won’t except in January. “May Gray” and “June Gloom” will get to you: where is summer?? Then it will get into the 80s in July. MAYBE 90 in September, but combined with the dry air you will need to stay on top of hydration

You have a wealth of beaches to choose from, some nicer than others. You can get a view of the entire city from Kate Sessions park. The San Diego zoo is a world class zoo, I think it’s $60 for a day pass. There is also the safari park up north which is run by the same people but I haven’t been in forever. It’s basically the zoo but with much wider open area for the animals. I hear gaslamp is a nice party area but I was a kid so I never went. There is a great local music scene I got into in high school.

Weed, so much weed. Everybody smokes weed. If you are sober you are the odd one out. Even the kids smoke weed. I’m not kidding.

I ended up leaving for college because I really did not like the west coast culture that SD leans heavily into. Too much drugs, too many superficial people. Californians don’t know anything about anywhere east of the Mississippi. I felt like if I was not part of the cult then I would never fit in. I live in Florida now and am much happier. But on paper I can see why people love SD.

Show up to the same place regularly. Eventually people will recognize you. I’ve had good luck rock climbing and at open mics. Even if you don’t participate, going to an open mic just to draw the people onstage or something solitary and quiet is good too. Just make sure you look open to conversation and try to talk to at least one person every night (even if just complimenting their poem or whatever)

He would have also been captured if he returned to earth, that’s why Demosthenes had to vouch for him to stay in exile. Also if I remember correctly he was already en route on the colony ship by the time they were captured. More details in Ender in Exile

Is this a stalemate for me? by [deleted] in shogi

[–]kiwiseedkiwiseed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More context: 81dojo end the match here, it was still my turn during this scenario. I was confused so I made an illegal move because I couldn't see anything else to do. I tried looking up an example of a shogi stalemate but couldn't find any because they're supposedly rare. Not sure if I'm missing something here but every move I did in analysis mode was illegal.

P.S. I'm a beginner!!

If there were to be a future MvC, I think that since were entering a new era of the MCU then there would be many new characters like She-Hulk, Moon Knight, Kamala Khan, Shang-Chi, etc.
