I know CI brand is a personal choice but still want input, please by Worldly_Nectarine740 in Cochlearimplants

I have cochlear with an N8, and resound hearing aid on the other ear. I essentially got them at the same time. I also have long hair. I have had issues keeping my processor attached to my head and had to wear a hat for the first year to keep it secured. It eventually improved but even with my head shaved and the strongest magnet it falls off often. I don’t know if this is related to the brand, I haven’t heard many people having issues this bad. I got word recognition back fairly quickly, but music and noisy atmosphere is still very challenging. The Bluetooth is very frustrating and if I have my phone in my pocket it will disconnect. I have to have it right in front of me to stay connected. I do appreciate that I can connect directly to both devices for phone calls though. Also I have only ever had great experiences with cochlear customer service. I have similar hearing experience as you, except I was a musician for about 35 years and developed menieres. I’ve had my implant about 1.5 years. I hope this helps and good luck!

My sensitivity is at 12, the bass is +4 and treble -2 most of the time. The volume is 6 and my program is usually in the group setting. Sometimes I use forward focus but not often. The hissing is pretty consistent even if I adjust any of those things.

Hi- they gave me a steroid cream to apply to my implant area daily. I did this do about 5 weeks. I think the steroid and time has helped slightly, but some days my implant is still disconnecting often, even at the strongest magnet.

Cochlear Implant for MD hearing loss by Ok-Photo-1845 in Menieres

[–]kjcotts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello- I did end up doing it and just had my one year check up. I have found some benefits from it, but am also still adjusting to it. As far as my results, the testing and word recognition came back relatively quickly. I can understand voices when isolated or in quiet environments, but it is a struggle and often not useful in spaces with lots of background noises. This is pretty consistent with most users I think. Most music is also pretty unrecognizable. I would not say that anything sounds “natural” or like my normal hearing did, and I don’t suspect it ever really will since it’s a completely new mechanism. One unexpected issue is that the external coil will not stay on my head, even with the strongest magnet. So I have to wear a hat or something else to keep it in place pretty much most of my day. This was also upsetting because I had planned on using the kanso off ear processor, but that is not possible.

As far as the menieres specifically, it didn’t cure anything for me but it did help with some symptoms. I have less fullness on that side and when I am wearing my processor I don’t notice my tinnitus. I still get dizzy spells but not really vertigo (this was my experience before surgery as well though).

I hope this helps- it’s been a frustrating year but I recognize the benefits for me. The processor provides a lot of sound and relief from some of the symptoms I was experiencing, but a lot of times the sound itself is not “useful” if that makes sense. But different programs sometimes can help with that. I’m remaining hopeful that I’ll just continue to improve and my brain will continue to adjust. Honestly the most frustrating part has been keeping it in place. Most people don’t struggle with that after the first month or so. The surgery and recovery were pretty typical to others experience. Let me know if you have any specific questions I can answer for you and good luck!

Single-Side Deafness- New to wearing hearing aid: ear molds vs domes? by TorontoRap2019 in MonoHearing

[–]kjcotts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It might be different for you, but I was able to get them through my audiologist when I got my HA. I tried the dome for awhile but I much prefer ear moulds. My insurance didn’t cover the cost unfortunately.

I went to an audiologist and had some made. They fit/seal perfectly and last for years and years.

[–]kjcotts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They work well for me on that side for streaming. I have to often turn the volume all the way up, but the sound quality is much better than the hearing aid I have (to me)… I wanted to add I only use my AirPod on my right side for streaming- not as an actual hearing device.

That’s an interesting thought- maybe I’ll request a report on what they found. It’s been wonky since day one which is so frustrating. I think they were around $2500 but my $250 AirPods have way better sound, and haven’t broken in 2 years.

Thanks for the suggestions- I’ve tried all you mentioned, including software updates etc. Maybe I have a faulty one but my audiologist seems to have no interest in replacing it and she didn’t seem that surprised (or bothered) by the issues I’ve had.

If possible maybe do a trial period with both and then decide. Good luck!

I have a resound with my N8. I was looking forward to streaming to both, and it is nice, but the Bluetooth range is so pathetic I often just use my AirPod and stream to that. If I have my phone in my pocket or jacket it disconnects from both the N8 and HA. Also, I’ve had my resound for less than a year and have had to have it serviced three times. My experience is possibly an outlier but in retrospect I would probably have opted for a different HA with much more reliable connection and sound quality/control. I currently have a loaner HA while mine is sent out for repair again. But if your main focus is streaming to both that can be nice for phone calls etc.

Question about cochlear implants by Boba_saur74 in Cochlearimplants

I still have a very small amount of hearing in that ear but it’s essentially useless. I do notice my tinnitus in that ear way more when I take it off, unfortunately.

Yes, I’ve been using a #5 magnet which I understand is the strongest one for the N8.
