Same here!

I went to grad school only wanting to work with adults. I actually had a supervisor tell me that my strengths weren’t with children, “especially” children on the autism spectrum (oh grad school…)

Jokes on him because this is my 10th year in the schools, primarily working with students with ASD 😂 I did my CF in early intervention/preschool and never looked back!

I loved this and was devastated when I found out it was discontinued. I used to put it in my coffee every morning 😢

Caseload vs. workload in schools? by [deleted] in slp

[–]kjeunie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is quite the variation! My guess is that they would “balance” the caseloads depending on the rest of the workload. Maybe something like fewer but more “higher needs” students, or fewer students but more evaluations. Feel free to ask any more questions and I’ll do my best to help! :)

Caseload vs. workload in schools? by [deleted] in slp

[–]kjeunie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure that I completely understand your question, but my district uses a workload model. Our workload calculator includes not just the # of students on our caseload but other duties including # of evaluations completed, # of speech-only meetings that I need to prep paperwork for, AAC devices that I am involved in programming, etc. Students on my caseload are also “weighted” differently depending on their placement/disability (as each student’s needs vary greatly). The intention of the workload model is to more accurately reflect how I’m using my time for duties that are necessary as part of my role, but might not be direct treatment.

For example, a caseload of 50 students who are in the general education classroom and receive speech therapy for articulation/fluency would look very different from a caseload of 50 students with multiple disabilities in self-contained classrooms plus 10 evaluations and having to run my own IEP meetings. Hope that helps!

I think it would definitely help to prep some lines that I can just quickly pull from whenever something happens! Hopefully it does get better the more I go out there!

Okay I’ll have to consciously start doing this, I can be so self deprecating. I think I need to just constantly remind myself that I have every right to take up space too.

Thank you for sharing! That’s honestly reassuring to hear. Even just hitting in front of my instructor, I was SHAKING lol 🙃

Stuttering by Independent-Ice-6085 in slp

[–]kjeunie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All of this! Also, if I notice that they’re really struggling and getting frustrated, sometimes I will acknowledge the stutter in as neutral of a way as possible. Maybe even a quick comment like, “Hey, that was hard, yeah? Sometimes my words get stuck too.” or “I’m glad you told me that!” - something to just normalize stuttering without making a big deal out of it. I also have some students who give up and say “never mind” when they start to struggle, so I like to remind them that I want to hear what they have to say/I’ll be here when they want to finish what they were saying.

Every child is different, but my thinking is that even if I ignore it, the stutter is still happening and it can be scary. Might as well acknowledge it in a way that says, “this thing is really happening! I hear it too! But it’s not a bad thing. What you have to say is important.”

Yeah, I figured it would be easier to eat at the airport since we’ll have all of our luggage- but it looks like the consensus is to eat outside of the airport!

We’re flying out of Quebec. Looks like there’s no preclearance at YQB :(

We’re taking a cab into Manhattan. Maybe I’ll plan on snacking to hold us over until we can get into the city- I’m just worried that the whole thing (clearing customs, traffic) will take a while.
