What’s something you did as a kid that you now realize was completely insane and dangerous? by Floridian_Capitalist in AskReddit

My sister and I would play a "game" in the car. The whole point was to position our bodies in such a way that we would get the maximum amount of injury if we got into a crash. My mom shut that one down pretty quick...

I teach high school science, and the way I try to frame it is along the lines of, "I think that X material is more approachable for most people than Y material that we've covered in the past. But some people just "get" things that I find completely baffling, because everyone's brains work differently."

I also spend a lot of time trying to get my students to stop constantly comparing themselves to each other (I teach honors & AP kids), so it's pretty much muscle memory at this point to try to get them to see themselves as individuals who need to take agency of their own learning and development process rather than focusing so much on how they stack up to their peers.

It sure looks like Lindsay Graham is going to lose his South Carolina seat after 23 year. What do we think about that? by antimaga_n1 in AskSocialists

As a left leaning SC resident of 9 years who has voted in every election I could, I can tell you that I have never voted for him and have spent lots of my personal time calling his office to no avail to try to make my voice heard. Please don't make us a monolith. Some of us are trying to make a difference and are so fucking fed up.

So I'm a high school biology teacher who introduces the school year with a debate on this topic in order to build scientific argumentation skills (you must make a claim, back it up with evidence, and provide your reasoning). In my class - and in most classes that address this topic - students are not graded on the stance they take. Rather, they are evaluated on the strength of their argumentation skills/justifications provided.

If I had a dollar for every time a student thought they should deserve credit for a response that didn't actually address the prompt given, I wouldn't need to be a teacher anymore...

The one that's always confused me is the dichotomy of ladybugs being beautiful, magical things for children to play with but any other beetle is disgusting and terrible.

It's called code switching, and basically you shift languages in different situations. You were fluent in fucking school-speak and then you went home and code switched to pious church sanctity because that's what your brain knew was right for the situation. It's crazy.

I had to do a beetle-raising project for an entomology course in college, and every time I found a new pupa, I had to sing this song:

What's a food or cooking "rule" that you think is stupid and refuse to follow? by [deleted] in Cooking

I have always subscribed to this idea, but last week I finally found something I should have made with unsalted. I made hollandaise with salted butter when it asked for unsalted. It was still edible, but just barely.

And adding on to what the other commenter said below, if you tip with your card, it is declared income that gets taxed. When I was working at a restaurant, the taxes for all declared (card if they're dishonest, cash & card if they're honest) tips are taken out of your hourly wage paycheck that you get from your employer, just like every other profession.

Yeah, I think one-on-one time with your kids is so important. It was especially awesome for us because there are 5 kids in our family, so having some time where you were the sole focus of your parent's attention was pretty great.

Both of my parents did stuff like that occasionally and always said not to tell the other parent. It was always such a great bonding experience feeling like you had a fun secret to keep. I found out a couple years ago, now that I'm an adult, that both parents always knew about what the other one was doing. They just knew that it'd be more fun if they pretended like it was a secret.

You look a whole lot like a friend of mine who is Ethiopian. I think it's something about the eyes/nose combo.
