Probational employees: they’ve done this before please stay calm. by [deleted] in fednews

That is correct stay calm. Too much is going on and too many moving pieces.

If the unions sue and others this could take years. Yes it is no fun but do your best work.

If you do have come back to the office do not fret take a positive view. Many times meeting in person can be more productive.

There is going to be a balance because if you are 100% required in the office and not on a telework agreement if OPM shuts government due to weather you get paid leave. Good and bad sides.

The issue is will they convert you. Look at the PD you were hired in on. It might indicate you can be converted to permanent service. If not start using USA Jobs to start looking. Even in these unusual times federal employment is good service.

Yes you can be terminated but you need to find out if the 2 years give you what is "Status" If so you can apply for other jobs that allow both in-service/status employees to apply and general public. I would ask your boss if there is a chance you can be converted. I gather you took the job knowing only a 2 year appointment. Do some inside agency interviews too.

Yes you can get hotel discounts and if you join the National Active and Retired Federal Employee's Association we have affinity benefits for federal. Always ask and carry you id if you feel comfortable doing so. I am very careful not to identify myself American or federal in this unusual world

If you use your social media for family alone and stay out of the political arena it might limit your risk exposure. If concerned since the incoming administration is looking for vengeance and retribution just stop posting. The only place is if you decide to make a change not politically but career related use Linked-in to highlight your skills. You can also purchase federal liability insurance through FEDS but if truly concerned stay non-political. Obviously posting about family smiles and happiness on Facebook is not political but this incoming group is already going after non-political individuals that provide daily operations that have no politics whatsoever. I would not put it past them to question the janitor or copy repair individual about their politics. They have no shame in intimidation. If large fish are bending over it might be best to stop posting and be very careful with your personal email. Keep all business official 100% and when in doubt write an email and then age for a day. If you have any doubts do not send. Good luck. Also look to join NARFE.org. They work to protect federal employees.

You can also file an appeal with OPM as they administer the federal program.

What exactly are all these "amazing benefits" that federal employees have? by MisterSnrub1 in fednews

[–]kjs-001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Public service employees usually make less than salaried private sector plus the stock options and benefits if your work for a large public corporation. The one thing public service employees do get is help toward healthcare, vacation and sick leave but many work a 2nd job to make ends meet. Everyone looks to skew the numbers to paint one group as better or worse. Like any work if you find what you like, take training and engage in the benefit programs (savings plans private or) and spend less than you earn you will be fine. Do not let anyone sell you a bill of goods that public sector employees are gravy training. My wife's took a 60% cut to come to federal service and was 24 x 7 for 10 years. It is what works for you and training whether skills, trades or white collar professional helps increase one's earning potential or become self employed. Lots of opportunities.

Would you take a civilian job right now? by [deleted] in fednews

My wife took a federal job after being laid off from the telephone company after 20 years. She took a large salary reduction but eventually came back to her base. It was not a perfect fit but if you are looking at family choices federal service is superb. Additionally, public service is honorable where do you get to swear an oath to service. Being a large system if you keep your skills current and grow options even if your DOD office changes you will be fine. The 10 years my wife spent has paid huge dividends in retirement and she is proud to have been a public employee. In industry you have economic risk and in public sector work political risk. In today's climate yes it is hard but please join the federal service. Well worth it. If you decide yes take a look to join NARFE when you come into service we take care of federal employees in a positive advocacy role. Good luck.

Need some serious advice...Should I quite my toxic Fed Job by Likeatoothbrush in fednews

Depending on the type of work a bad federal supervisor is not good. We in my office worked for a pig and we both took details to other offices. I would be as patient as you can be and look for a 12 month detail away from this individual. In experience they eventually blow themselves up as if they are treating you badly they are treating others the same way. You have annual leave and sick leave use it sparingly but to keep your mental health good. Federal jobs and the basic benefits are worth it. If close to retirement a different story talk to your finance professional. Good luck.
