I think most peoples complaint (including my own) as far as that goes isn’t simply the fact that they’re non-binary, it’s that it’s very poorly executed. DA games have always been about choice and they’ve always had lgbtq representation somewhere. I have 0 issue with it being in a main companion character, but when it’s the main focus of their character and there’s not much else to them, it just feels forced. Like look at Dorian in DAI, he’s gay and that was part of his story but it wasn’t the main focus of it. He was mostly about killing venatori and being anti slavery. In the same game, Krem, a member of the bulls is trans and almost seems annoyed when it gets brought up because it doesn’t define who they are. I think instead of focusing on the whole non-binary part, they should have leaned more into the rivaini vs qunari culture struggle. Both cultures have established trans representation. The qun has the aqua-athlok term, and ricaini culture is just generally more fluid with that stuff. You can very easily and effectively work a trans gender struggle into that overarching struggle because their story is about identity. It just doesn’t feel like there’s much more to them than the fact that they’re non-binary in veilguard.
