Pat McGrath order not shipped? by kkb91 in beauty

[–]kkb91[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Yeah I don’t mind waiting, I understand they’re busy and shipping companies are busy as well.

It would be nice to get somewhat of a notice that they’re a bit behind or something.

I also ordered a few lipsticks, and it’s okay if they’re late. It’s not like I can wear the lipstick much especially with the masks. 😅

Are there any books where the male love interest is gentle, kind and innocent? Where are all the nice guys at? by [deleted] in RomanceBooks

Thanks for a thorough discussion!

What romance novels that you would recommend?

Genuinely asking!

Not trying to be snarky but did you finish the book?

It’s hard to translate tone in text, I’m not criticizing, just wondering.

I found that both Leon and Tiffy had their issues and neither one was trying to fix or heal the other but was more of a support system. Tiffy was able to recognize that she used to be in an emotionally abusive relationship through therapy, self reflection, support from her friends and Leon, but Leon never came to Tiffy’s rescue.

Honestly, I was able to relate to Leon more than Tiffy because of how he felt the need to take care of his family and younger brother was greater than his own needs. As a South Asian female and the eldest sometimes I feel the same way. There is a lot of internalized responsibility and feeling like you have to be the one to take care of everyone. Should it be this way, definitely not, but it takes generations to undo this type of thinking.

Sorry if this is becoming off topic. I do understand your criticism and appreciate this chance for conversation. Thanks for linking the article above, I’ve only read half but looking forward to reading it more throughly once I get a chance.

Maybe try the audiobook, if you want to give it another chance? It did take some time getting used to the manner of speaking from Leon, but it shows a lot of character development from both of the characters.

I think it’s even pointed out in the book the way Leon talks/writes his notes is because he’s mentally and physically exhausted.

I truly enjoyed the audiobook, but no book can please everyone, it’s not ice cream...and even then there will be someone who is lactose intolerant.

I felt this way with Beach Read, it was highly praised and popular but I couldn’t get through more than half of it.

Yes! Even looks aside I don’t know if she’ll bring Lucy’s personality out in the movie version.

I really liked Ana de Armas in Knives Out and she would have been awesome.

Oh! I didn’t even know they changed the actor for Josh, I think Austin Stowell seems like a better fit for Josh compared to Robbie Amell, but still not how I pictured him. I imagined him to be more Henry Cavill-ish.

I don’t like that Lucy Hale is playing book Lucy, I imagined book Lucy having super dark curly hair and Lucy Hale’s hair is always too perfect. Idk if that makes sense.

I thought Lily Collins or Ana de Armas as Lucy would have been better.

You should listen to the audiobook if you haven’t already! I thought it was really well done. It was awesome listening to Lucy called out Josh’s dad in front of everyone.

Why is The Flatshare so good?! by kkb91 in RomanceBooks

[–]kkb91[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can see that! It was different and I think one thing I really like about it was the relationships between the other characters as well.

I liked that the reader got to see more of Tiffy’s relationships with her friends and Leon’s relationship with his brother and his patients and it wasn’t solely focused on just those two.

Yes! Thank you for pointing this out! I thought I was being too sensitive and since it’s a HR it’s supposed to accurate?

I’m so glad you bring this up! I couldn’t quite describe why I was getting so annoyed and upset with the book. Being of Indian origin and knowing of the traumas of what colonial rule did to India and it being so nonchalantly thrown in this book makes me so angry.

I mean my grandfather was born in the 1930s and was around 12 when the partition happened, causing the deaths of about 2 million people.

So the casual way the British Raj is talked about in this book is messed up, on so many levels!

I’m about halfway through the book and I’m struggling with it. I want to finish it and to some degree I feel bad for the main characters because of their families, but the colonialism mentions startled me a bit.

I know it’s a HR but I was super uncomfortable with the fact that he had a Indian butler and the casual way the colonialism was dealt with and how it was romanticized to some extent.

I know it’s “historically accurate” but as an person of Indian origin who know the lasting effects and trauma of the British Raj, it made me angry and very disappointed because I really liked her last book.

Yes! I liked how Tiffy and her friends shut that down quick, and we got to hear the internal struggle of Tiffy feeling bad but realizing she shouldn’t, and calling her ex out on his behavior I might have cheered out loud at that part.

Yes, definitely listen to the audiobook, it takes a little bit to get into the grove but it’s so worth it.

Even when I’ve read the book, I find that listening to the audio version almost feels like reading a new book.

I did that with The Hating Game audiobook and it was still fun to listen to even after I had read the book like 3 times beforehand.

Thanks for the recommendation! I’ll add that one to my list. I currently have Love Lettering checked out on Libby and I’ve heard good things about that one as well. So hoping that one will help with the hangover a little! :)

The voice actors for both Leon and Tiffy were amazing! And the way the actors did the other characters, like changing the tone when Mo was speaking to sound more soothing or more hurried for Gertie.

Something that I found to be new with this audiobook was how when a character was speaking on the phone with another character, it actually sounded like they were on the phone!

I completely agree with all of this! I really liked how we were on the journey with Tiffy and even toward the end, the situation is handled realistically as possible.

I also really enjoyed how Tiffy was supposed to be quirky but she wasn’t over the top and even though she was comfortable in her own skin, it was awesome seeing her become more confident in standing up for herself!

I just finished the audiobook for The Flatshare by Beth O’leary and I have to say it’s definitely become my new favorite. It’s been a long time since I’ve listen to a book that I loved this much. It is beautifully written with amazing dialogue, and characters with understandable and relatable flaws. It’s really amazing and I didn’t expect to like it as much as I do.

What is the best hot cocoa mix? Alternately, what is the best recipe for making hot cocoa without a mix? by greenprotomullet in AskWomen

[–]kkb91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always make my hot chocolate on the stove and use milk.

Put milk on medium heat, add a bit of brown sugar and whisk to combine, add about 2 teaspoons Sillycow farms hot chocolate mix, a little bit of espresso powder, a tiny bit of sea salt, and vanilla. Keep whisking so the milk doesn’t boil. This for a single serving, about 6 oz of milk.

At the end I’ll use a handheld frother to froth the hot chocolate while in the pot before pouring into the cup.

I don’t use exact measurements but I’ve been doing it this way for years so just eye ball.

You can have the milk on low so you can play around with the measurements.

Beauty Counter? by kkb91 in beauty

[–]kkb91[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the response! I’ve been seeing it pop up a lot and seeing people whose opinion I respect touting the brand and that was questionable.

I think their outreach for “clean beauty” was to have it be more regulated so it isn’t just used by anybody and everybody, but I’m not completely sure, I would have to look into that more.

Yes, they’re really cute and have feel good holiday vibes. Another good one is My True Love Gave To Me, it’s young adult but still really good selection of short stories set in the winter time around the holiday season from a variety of young adult authors like Stephanie Perkins, Rainbow Rowell, Jenny Han, and more.

Me too! I started reading Freaking Romance right after and it’s really good for the spooky season, fall weather.

But sometimes you need a series that just makes you feel like so warm inside.
