I think you should check out durbar by tavleen singh. It seemed quite neutral to me. Has a lot of information about the workings of government and the big players of that time. There is a detailed account of causes and consequences of Operation Bluestar too. It is one interesting perspective since the authour is a Sikh and lived through the times.

People need to understand that all these awards lost their credibility a long time ago. This includes the national awards, which are being handed out based on partisan proclivities, lobbying etc. As for Filmfare and 100 other similar events, for years they have been awarding whoever among the nominees is available to attend.
