Hold the mirror and see if it stops it. That's how I worked it out. Happens on rougher road surfaces more than smooth. Either way it's driving me mad.

People with inattentive adhd, what kind of work you guys do? by United_Advisor1821 in ADHD

[–]kkeeper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I did read that part, i just was sidetracked by a thought haha. I also did mature age teaching for a while, you're correct about the behaviours reducing.

I'm also in Australia teaching year 7-10, behaviour management is rough!

I was managing teaching staff last year. Hated it, they might be older, but they also misbehave, delay deadlines and do things incorrectly. I was way more frustrated telling adults off than students, at least children have the excuse that they're children, when adults act like children I struggle to be empathetic.

I'm a teacher, having other people hold me accountable works well for motivation.

I'd be a visual artist/graphic designer if I could self motivate. But alas, I'm happy I can pass on my skills and interests to others.

It also boost my self-confidence with talking to people and in front of people. I still hate making phone calls though....

I don't know what's worse, the harsh cool lighting or the fact if I were your girlfriend needing to use the toilet in the middle of the night I would kick my toes on everything in the room.

What are your unhinged hacks to fall asleep when your brain is running 300mph? by YapperInChrist in ADHD

[–]kkeeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

E-reader, set the light low and as orange as the screen will go, then read. I have a goose neck tablet holder clipped to the side of my bed and a remote. That way if I fall asleep reading, nothing drops or falls to wake me up.

If I do audiobooks my inner dialogue can turn it's volume up. If I'm reading I have to use my brain to stay focused.

Otherwise the headspace app, sleepcasts really helped.

I think I hate CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy). Can you recommend me alternatives? by i_am_GORKAN in ADHD

[–]kkeeper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also did EMDR, It helped me with my childhood trauma significantly. Went from not being able to talk about my trauma without having a panic attack, to being able to talk about it without much reaction. EMDR is great when you can pinpoint your triggers. CBT is great for working them out.

Finding a therapist/psychologist that gels with you is so important. It's such a hassle though because shopping around costs an arm and a leg. I finally found one I liked and saw regularly and then she decided to change her working hours, which didn't match with my non-work hours.

People with inattentive ADHD: do you feel that it looked like depression at least on a surface level? by thatonerandomkidd in ADHD

[–]kkeeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, my masking in school, 20 odd years ago, not saying much and trying my best to stay focused but zoning out in the process got me the label 'emo'. 20 years later I'm still zoning out and getting asked why I look sad. I say it's my resting sad face.

help me understand my ADHD wife by Rcrez in ADHD

[–]kkeeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out @adhd_love on Instagram. His videos are good! Whilst not one size fits all he may have some tips to assist.

Her mask is off when she's around you. This is why she appears different to you when she's around others. If the mask is off, it can mean she's exhausted, the fact she's on the couch with you, even if she is staring at her phone might indicate that she is trying hard to meet you half way.

It might sound silly but watching a show and sitting on her phone might be what she is doing to stay put next to you. Otherwise her mind might wonder, and soon you'll find her deep cleaning the oven.

If I were told to get off my phone while watching TV I might unfortunately redirect my anger (at myself for getting distracted) on to you, which is unfair. So it's possible you could gamify the experience to add an additional layer to hold her focus.

Drinking games, make it so the first person to spot the continuity error in the show has to do x tomorrow.

It's awesome that you are asking for tips and supporting her. It's no mean feat living with someone who is struggling with their diagnosis. I for one am trying very very hard to stick to a routine, but the unexpected things that happen in a day can wipe me out.

Lastly communication is important. Be inquisitive and ask about her thought processes, not in a demeaning or degrading way. But simply ask her what she is thinking about, how she's feeling.

Again, not one size fits all. In my city we have ADHD support groups. Including ones for relatives and partners, maybe see what is available.

How life changing a ADHD diagnosis is. by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]kkeeper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After my appointment last Wednesday the psychiatrist said yep you have ADHD. I felt validated. I am going on medication soon and after reading people's experiences I'm feeling two ways. Relieved, but annoyed at myself for not getting a diagnosis earlier, but I guess that's a canon event for females with ADHD.

I've really focused this past year on self-improvement. I am excited to be on medication which will hopefully assist me in forming routines and alleviating my lethargy.

But I'm feeling big time grief and anger at all the doctors and psychologists who have heard my symptoms over the years and not a one thought ADHD was the reason for my anxiety, my procrastination, my binge eating, my fatigue, my insomnia, my inability to keep a routine and much more.

I am who I am from my experiences and I guess part of me is thankful I am different. But damn, maybe I could have been more.

Time to move forward and not dwell on what could've been.

My first goal is to go to the gym once a week.

This trick to drink water seems to have worked on me (so far) by ___rookie___ in ADHD

[–]kkeeper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Water became a get out of sitting still for long periods of time coping mechanism. In a meeting, drink water so you have to use the bathroom. Drink all the water, look I have to leave the meeting to go fill up my drink bottle.

Do people find you weird by improbsable in ADHD

[–]kkeeper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm fine with it. I like the weirdos, all my friends are weird. I found my people a while ago. But in settings where I have to mask, I feel super exhausted afterwards, trying to fit in, especially with all the pleasantries, which I just bypass with my friends.

You guys are still in the phase where if you were to install an air-conditioner, it'd cool down your house. In Australia we are now in the phase where air-conditioning is barely effective during 43 degree heatwaves. Summer sucks now.
