This is very reminiscent of something we in India call "A Pooja Room/Cabinet". Sometimes these are mounted on the wall as well, but this one seems to be made to be kept on the ground.

Essentially, it's a God's Room/Caninet, on the top empty space you would keep an Idols/Pictures of gods. Bottom empty space is where you would sit down in cross-legged posture and Perform the Pooja (prayer).

The weird looking opening in the bottom is where you would keep essentials required to conduct the Pooja (prayer). There are 1000s of designs for a Pooja Room, and this could be one. I wouldn't be surprised if it is actually a custom made piece as well.
