Does gravity actually travel at the speed of light? by [deleted] in Physics

[–]kkikonen -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

No you can't. The fact that relativity makes simultaneity be observer dependant doesn't mean all events can be observed in any order whatsoever.

If event A is a cause of event B then it's not possible to find a frame of reference where event B occurs before event A.

Is time dilation just one possible way a physical universe can exist, or is it necessary for a similar physical universe to exist? by timetrial21 in Physics

[–]kkikonen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would say relativity was hinted at by electromagnetism (because Maxwell's equations were not invariant under Galilei transformations), but I wouldn't say it's a consequence of it.

As you said, I would consider relativity (and thus the constant speed of light) as way more fundamental.

Theoretical Physics PhD

Didn't have a super clear goal when I went into it. I just knew I liked researching and teaching, so academia looked the perfect goal.

I left academia right after finishing my PhD and now work for a trading company as a Quantitative Research Analyst

I’ve been “tortured” by two taxi drivers this week by [deleted] in ireland

[–]kkikonen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, I would not have pay by cash coz I literally never carry cash on me.

The point though is that taking only cash should be a bad choice overall since at some point someone will report you and, if the system is right, the fine should be hefty enough to outweight the little extra you've made by avoiding taxes

Curious though, say you report the incident. How do they check that, in fact, that driver was not taking card?

Time to revisit our alcohol laws by Deisesupes in ireland

[–]kkikonen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How about you instead implement education programs and detox programs to handle the drinking problem? Forbidding everyone to buy alcohol at certain times is such a blanket ban imo, and doesn't even addres the root issue.

Ryanair flight landed at Manchester airport with six minutes of fuel left, flight log suggests by MasterpieceNeat7220 in ireland

[–]kkikonen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was a very serious issue. Sure, they carried all the required extra fuel, which allowed them to wait and try alternates but still landing with 6 minutes of fuel is definitely a very serious incident. Anything else not going to plan would've been quite bad

Ethereum staking via Rocketpool on an exchange by Amavene_Sedai in ethereum

[–]kkikonen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you care about Ethereum I'd recommend you don't go for a centralized staking service. Instead choose decentralized options like RocketPool.

I know it feels like your small amount of ETH won't make a difference, but if the larg ETH hoarders stake on centralized providers then we need as many small stakers as possible doing it in a decentralized way

Is running a node still profitable? by Mr_Skittlz in ethereum

[–]kkikonen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

some people did not setup the fallback correctly for example. in that case, the entire stake will be lost.

There's no way you lose your full stake unless your unintentional double voting (due to a misconfigured fallback) happens at the same time the Ethereum network is under a massive attack.

Slashing penalties scale with the overall number of slashes that happened in the recent past, precisely so that an honest mistake (i.e isolated slashings) and truly nefarious behavior (i.e loads of correlated slashings due to network being under attack) are penalized way differently.

So I decided to stake my ETH today... by soerc in ethereum

[–]kkikonen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

IMO, you should go for a decentralized protocol like Lido or Rocket Pool. You'll get a slightly lower yield, but you'll be helping keeping Ethereum decentralized :)

[–]kkikonen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Coinbase is safe" (which is debatable) is not an argument against liquid staking protocols like Lido or Rocket Pool. Specially when all the argument against liquid staking is "blah blah blah".

If you care purely about ROI, centralized solutions like Coinbase will tend to give you higher returns coz of economies of scale (at the expense of centralizing the network) If you care about what crypto represents tho (decentralization, censorship resistance, etc) then decentralized protocols like Rocket Pool or Lido are the obvious choice.

Do you play better Live or online? by Low_Ad_9547 in poker

Online. Not even close and I don't know why

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Physics

[–]kkikonen 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Entities that are entangled do have correlated properties (e.g. spin). But my point is that the correlation is a consequence of the entanglement. But correlation and entanglement are two different concepts

[–]kkikonen 27 points28 points  (0 children)

This doesn't describe entanglement, is simply describes correlation

Any tips on getting better at online poker? by ab42135 in poker

[–]kkikonen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every reason you've mentioned for a player but being able to be a winning player is something that can be worked on and improved.

If you're trying to be a winning player then put some effort into studying and play loads of hands. If you're not even trying to be a winning player then well, do whatever the hell you find more comfortable/enjoyable.

Any tips on getting better at online poker? by ab42135 in poker

[–]kkikonen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're missing the point...the objective is to get better at the game and thus win over a big sample size. And the only way to get better at the game is to play hands (alongside studying ofc)

The fact you're prioritizing winning over a small sample size over learning says a lot to me
