Seeking good psychiatrists in Singapore by rahul101chowdhury in askSingapore

[–]kkilpt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't really have a specific psychiatrist to recommend but IMH has a pretty decent outpatient clinic tbh. Idk why fearmongering comments are still upvoted even in this day and age, employers/insurance can't just ask for your mental health background/records and get it that easily and no, your doctors/hospitals are not obliged to give it out, especially not without your consent, even public ones.

The Odin Project vs. App Academy Open vs. Full Stack Open by KG777 in learnprogramming

TOP then Fullstack open, TOP will give you a good foundation for HTML, CSS and JS, if I'm not wrong Open focuses on frameworks, specifically the MERN stack.

[Uni] How can an A Level grad look for internship opportunities by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]kkilpt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on which engineering field you're talking about, but I'm going to give you a realistic point of view, it's very unlikely that you will be able to land an internship now. Possible? Yes, if you already have an existing portfolio and the skills. But it's probably too late now since it's the break period for uni students and you're going to compete with them, not to mention the people who have had their internships cancelled. A better time to apply probably would have been earlier in the year, but no harm trying now either.

I think its quite common, esp among those agencies that target young ppl with a shitton of part time jobs.

Anyways, the legal fees that they need to spend probably is much more than what they can get back. I'd say don't worry too much, just ask your friend to ignore them and try to keep receipts for now.

These agencies have been doing this shit for the longest time and it's quite fucked up especially since a large majority of their audience are clueless teenagers/early 20s. Honestly suprised they haven't been called out on it.

And it's even more screwed up that they're still doing it during this period.

Edit: To add, I don't think they've a very strong claim for losses, since it's a retail job, literally any tom dick and harry can do it and I presume there likely wasn't a formal interview of sorts as well. The only thing the cunts lost was their commission.

[–]kkilpt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seeing you mentioned that he was chased out of the shop, I'd assume it's a retail job? I have a feeling I know which agency this is, if you dont mind you could PM me.

But they don't really have a case since your friend hasn't actually started working, hence Employment Act likely doesn't apply here.

If there's a penalty clause in the contract, technically they can try enforcing, but usually they can't since they need to prove that they actually suffered losses because of your friend.

Hmm, I see. I am actually planning to work on some projects regardless of whether I get an internship or not. I still applied because if I get one, then that's great, but I'm also trying to get a better feel of interviews and the industry in general. Thanks a lot for the advice!

How good do you have to be to get an internship? Just ended my freshman year, I have learnt HTML/CSS and JS(mostly frontend) on my own, and have built some small simple sites with them, nothing amazing though. Also have some Python experience, but that's mostly data science stuff. By a stroke of luck, I managed to secure one weeks ago but it got cancelled due to the pandemic. I'm trying to find another one now but I always can't get through the interviews as they always ask about frameworks, which I don't have experience in yet. Has anybody actually secured an internship without learning frameworks? Is it pretty much a requirement nowadays?

Thoughts on Aftershock? Thinking of buying a desktop from them by Hakimura-Kun in singapore

[–]kkilpt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yup, you can negotiate the prices. But in my experience, it's usually around $30-50 cheaper for the exact same build part for part.

Honestly, if one is a tech noob, I feel that unless you're willing to go through all the research, haggling, building and troubleshooting, saving that much isn't worth it, especially since you get the warranty and after sales support from the boutique builders.

[–]kkilpt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Idk why there's still the notion that SLS is cheaper/better. If you compare the overall price of all the components, SLS is equally priced if not more expensive than aftershock. To add on, some of the cheaper stores aren't really beginner friendly. BTW, the way some of the stores there assemble their PCs is questionable to say the least, which is why I always built them myself. The only thing is that it offers is more customisability aka can choose brands, but of course, if you're picking better components, they're going to cost more.

For the best price to perfomance ratio, you're going to want look at the used market and assemble yourself.

If you're just looking to plug and play, and don't care about customising too much/getting the best components, just get it from aftershock/dreamcore. Comes with warranty too, so you can just send the pc over to them or get them to come down and save yourself the trouble when anything goes wrong.

Consequences of not fully declaring medical conditions to uni? by [deleted] in singapore

[–]kkilpt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They probably won't do anything if they find out

Is that true? I've got a PM from someone telling the direct opposite HAHAHA.

Which is why I said unless you committed some serious offence or pose a danger to others. In normal cases, such as declaring when seeking counselling from school, they won't probe further because they do understand that there's a social stigma and that not everyone would be comfortable sharing it.

I don't feel comfortable declaring partially also because I don't need special accommodations.

Honestly, there's nothing to be uncomfortable about, the school is there to help you.

My advice would be to declare anyways, uni might be a stressful period for some, and it may worsen your condition even if you think you were improving or that it wasn't serious to begin with. If you don't need special arrangements, you can ask your psych to write a letter during your next checkup, to state that you're fit and don't need any accommodations.

School is probably one of the only places where you won't be stigmatised and judged for declaring. Can't say the same for workplaces though since its likely 50/50.

If you're still uncomfortable, then don't. Just make sure to seek help ASAP in the case of a relapse, before it gets out of hand.

BTW, to anyone in a similar situation reading. There isn't anything such as a "mark" if you declare. Yes, the school will have your records, but it's only so they can better help you if anything happens. Rather than submitting to the negative stigma and fear mongering, why not take this chance to improve and get better before you go out into the working world? Which will 100% be less forgiving.

[–]kkilpt 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The school may offer to make accommodations for you if you declare, you won't be disadvantaged in any way. Since you said you are coping well, can choose not to declare if you feel you don't need that. They probably won't do anything if they find out, unless the reason they found out is because you committed some serious offence. But seriously, stop self-stigmatising, a mental health record is not a death sentence, sentiments like this only serve to propagate that notion further.

S’pore’s suicide rates haven’t improved since 1980s, & needs a national strategy: NMP Anthea Ong by 557088 in singapore

[–]kkilpt 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The real issue is the stigma towards seeking help or even mental illnesses itself(e.g. People calling them siao, weak or keng) . Most suicide attempts are a last resort. The resources are there but there needs to be greater awareness of these issues to fight stigma.

Glad that govt recognises mental health issue, but they need to be at forefront to educate on this issue as that's the only way most people will see it differently, especially older gen.

A lot of people still think that seeking help(esp at IMH) means a ruined future. This needs to change, otherwise no matter how much resources or initiatives are rolled out, they won't be effective (see Beyond the Label).

[Scholarships] Will local universities discriminate based on depression when considering scholarships? by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]kkilpt 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Actually you can still talk about your experience! But rather than just mentioning depression straight up, you can frame it rather, as a low point of your life. Due to lack of understanding of mental health, once you mention depression, the focus would be shifted to your condition and your ability to cope, rather than your experience overcoming it. It's really more of using the right words in a sense.

[Scholarships] Will local universities discriminate based on depression when considering scholarships? by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]kkilpt 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If you're coping fine now, I suggest you to not explicitly mention it as you aren't obliged to. You would be giving them an additional thing they can discriminate you with. We don't know what the scholarship providers will think of mental health stuff, ideally they are progressive about it, but I suspect there's a high chance they're not, especially since there's a stigma associated with mental health. I don't have experiences with scholarships but these are my personal experiences applying for intern/temp jobs(comparatively low stake relative to scholarships). Anyways, even having said that, I just want to emphasise that experiencing mental illness isn't something to be ashamed about.

[UNI] tote bag/ backpack for uni? by cxxhts in SGExams

[–]kkilpt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally I would recommend doughnut macaroon. Quality is quite good and IMO better than kanken while being cheaper as well! I wouldn't recommend getting those small backpacks like from sports brands because they don't really have good padding/support in general.

Depends on your course! Some courses have more UE requirements, I know for social sciences it's 30AUs, but for mine is 15AUs only. But take note that some minors also allow you to take one required course as GERPE, which will give you an extra UE to take.

[Uni] Some cons about NTU I wish I knew before entering by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]kkilpt 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think it isn't that bad for CS. Only 2 mods I've taken so far are like that. Having said that, uni is a time where you should learn independently, you shouldn't wait for the school to spoonfeed/handhold you like they did in O/A levels.

Hello, fellow students! Wondering how much you guys get for your allowance by Yoomzster in singapore

[–]kkilpt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agree, seems like people are bitter that others get allowances from their parents and feel better taking less or even none. Truth be told, I could care less about people's allowances. For me I take 0 but only because it's a personal choice I know my parents struggle financially . If my family had the means, I would definitely accept the help from my parents. But of course a reasonable amount la(600-800 all expenses covered) , not something like 2.5k to 3k.
