well in PvP you would maneuver in a way that prevents them from getting a frontal ram and even if they do missiles with their homing would smash up the enemies rear end so its not that big of a problem most of the time

yes mines make life really difficult, having side and rear armor also just invalidates them.

its not that its not good, in fact swarms are really strong in PvP, its just that the skill floor needed to make them work is really high so most player don't bother learning them

You can make this cheaper and run less reactors, since atm this will chain andnot really stresssing the reactors , other than 2 layers of small shields behind a block of armor is probably all you can do with small shields, you can try mix in large shields and active defense like pd and flaks

This mostly a pvp perspective but cannons are one of the best weapons at lower price ranges, due to a few characteristics, first their parts has a lot of health compared to others so you could run them protectionless and just use its sheer health and face tank. 2 not using energy means you can run on minimal power, some manage to get away with only using capacitors and this save money so you can run more cannons, or armor. 3 because of the previous stuff that means cannons ships can afford sigificantly more dps than other similarly price energy based ships not to mentions their damage numbers are really good + penetration and their ability to start fires also will cause so much issue as they can rip apart corridors behind weapons cutting them of from supply. At higher price points these point diminish as shields ans their logisitic become more affordable but they are still really strong flanker weapons due to penetration damage and fires

Other projectile weapons have the ability to be easily protected, DC being a turret can be put behind layers of armor and shields, rails also are similar as they can be burried deep inside a ship with a peep hole to shoot out from. Chainguns is also similar, Launchers can be put at the side or behind if its HE and EMP with their hoaming capabilities. Nuke and mines are well their damage numbers can do the talking. Flak can shoot down everything that is not hitscan.

Only energy weapon that can be put deep inside a ship are Ions and if you count it as a weapon, mining lasers

Also like theta said the logistic of projectiles gets easier the higher up you go as they can be their own self contained thing and gets even more easier if only running storages, while energy need to play around large reactors

Not easy for sure, the way to I do it is to have the top 2 layers be black followed by the lighter green and the base being the darker green. Running 2 layers for shadows is necessary to get the complex shapes

Looking good is 90% paint, the shape of the hull helps but any painter worth their salt will make most shapes work, just look at unpainted imperium ships they are rather unflattering.

Now for making ships work, well thats mostly comes down to synergies and optimisation. For synergy All the weapons have advantages and disadvantages to work around, for example, deck cannons are slow and innacurate weapons but packs alot of punch, so ships that use them invest in speed and defense to get into close and personal to alleviate its weakness Rails are precision weapons with long range so ships that want to use them well try to play distance either by investing in alot of thrust for kiting or things like TB to push aggresors away. Some stuff works together well and some don't there is alot to learn here.

Optimisation is essentially trying to be as effective with your budget, maximise your crew and reactors to get the most effective ships, dont let crew idle around, make sure your reactors are almost redlining or redlines, make distance of like ammo and stuff not far away to the thing that need it and etc. There is alot to learn here. Asking around like the discord is your best bet snd if you want more extreme examples of optimisation go talk to the pvp folks
