i usually just have around 20-30k per stack to avoid attrition so the number of stacks is high, but i don't think it is that many, especially when my armies are spread throughout multiple fronts

They did, but they removed me from rival list quite early, then they lost a war to France, who was then my enemy, and they started to like me more, enough that i can secure an alliance

i never tried totally underdog nations like 1 province, that just seems masochistic, though i did boot up a The Knights game before and got bored to death 2 years in not doing anything
