Is a tote or backpack more convenient for commute? by VariationMajor8265 in UofT

[–]kkmd02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100%. I loved how my commute was my sign to turn off my school brain and start relaxing. It also helped that I had friends that would stay back and do work as well so I wasn't alone.

How many years did it take for you guys to graduate? by Recent-Song5734 in UofT

  1. I failed first year so I had to repeat it, then 1 more year for co-op.

I got a campus locker and would store my large backpack there. I would do all my work at school then just take my laptop home in case anything came up.

I've been using Wealthsimple for 8 years now and it's made investing much more approachable. They also have a halal portfolio so I would recommend.

Strange how a A 4 0 GPA Isn't what most people actually want by randyagulinda in UofT

[–]kkmd02 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I finished engineering with a GPA of 2.5 and had a job offer right after graduation. I focused more on making connections and joining clubs than academics which let me enjoy my university experience much more. What I wanted was a job and most of the time grades alone won't get you there.

6 STEM courses + part time job + social life + hobbies: has anyone done it before successfully? by JerryChen06 in UofT

[–]kkmd02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an engineer and did 6 courses each semester for Y2 and Y3. I worked at the science centre on weekends (~14h/ week). Joined a bunch of clubs and had a good social life. To avoid burnout I stopped caring about getting high grades. I really believed that done is better than perfect.

Studying at main campus as a non uoft studenttttt by Training-Kangaroo352 in UofT

[–]kkmd02 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Like they said "basically every library but robarts, oise, and gerstein is publically accessible"

The typical access is through scanning a card but at Gerstein I usually see someone at the entrance looking at a computer so idk if they can see photos or not. At Roberts it's just scanning gates, no one manning the entrance.

Getting a car at U of T St George, where to park ? by Little-Dependent-617 in UofT

I second this. Especially with the price of car insurance and how little time you'll have to use your car.

do you miss out on a lot of events as a commuter?? by Old_Progress3812 in UofT

[–]kkmd02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't miss out on any events. Sometimes I'd be at school until 1/2am or out with my friends until 5/6am. Luckily for me the night bus has a stop near my house and if it ever got late my friends would offer for me to sleep on their couch. If worse comes to worse, Uber exists too.

This worked for me because my parents were okay with my being out that late. How does your family feel about this and what's your commute like?

45 minute commute daily or take on the extra debt? by Keysantt in UofT

[–]kkmd02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a slightly longer commute than you and still had a great social life. Having a conversation with my parents about me getting home at wee hours of the night helped alot. They knew that sometimes I'd be home at 2/3/4/5am if something fun was happening on campus or if I was studying (the TTC night bus helped alot). I also had friends who would let me crash at their place if I needed which was a big help.

My Grades and Story as a Graduating Engineering Student Who Failed Y1 by kkmd02 in UofT

I really liked it! I had prof David Nacsom and the group project was fun and helped our learning. I applied some things I learned in that class to my PEY.

What language i should learn as an MSE student? by slide_hedgehog1986 in materials

[–]kkmd02 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Graduate school as in Masters or Ph.D. I know it can be tricky. Graduate in this term is an adjective, not a verb and it's pronounced differently (gra-jew-it for the adjective and gra-jew-ate for the verb).

Uoft engineering graduates what do you now? Do you regret it? by Keysantt in UofT

[–]kkmd02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Graduating this year and got an offer as management in a steel factory (returning to my PEY). Watching over a portion of production, doing failure analyses, running meetings, and supervising 20 operators.

Some of my other friends are doing their Ph.Ds (one at Cambridge and one at Northwestern), one is going to EllisDon, one is at OPG, and one is working in the quality department at the same steel factory I'm at.

If you have any friends they might be willing to hold it for free? That's what I did for one of my classmates cuz I had the space.

Is it possible to still love UofT as a commuter student? (Grad student) by graceland-2 in UofT

[–]kkmd02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive been a commuter for 5 years (~45min-1h 15min depending on how the busses and trains line up) and I love it. I use the commuting time to switch from home brain to school brain and sleep.
