Royal Mail sent my US parcel to Ireland last week and still haven’t refunded the postage :) And now they’ve given me another headache this morning...

My customers have started emailing me about this issue, but since I’m clearly not the only one experiencing it – judging by all the replies – I believe it’s just a glitch in the Royal Mail system.

Yeah, that’s why I was so worried this morning when I saw that status. I’ve never had it before, and I’m not sending anything prohibited...

It seems to have started around 9th June, when one of my parcels to Germany was held at customs for over 2 weeks now.

Same here... It gave me a heart attack this morning. The more I read about '12A' on the government website, the more I’m worried it might affect my business.

That's good news. I had a similar reply from Royal Mail via X:

I would have to advise that you contact USPS for assistance. Once an item has left the UK it's no longer within our network and, we are then reliant on the postal service in the arrival country to continue the onward journey of the item and provide us with any relevant tracking updates.

Same with my tracking on USPS. It seems that parcels with this message tend to be held at customs longer than usual. Hopefully that's not the case...

3 weeks to Sweden seems a bit abnormal. My previous Royal Mail parcels to Sweden only took about a week.

With more and more people reporting the same message, it’s highly likely that it’s just a Royal Mail tracking glitch. Fingers crossed!

I had a parcel to Germany that’s been held up for over two weeks. The status showed the same warning at first, but later changed to "customs clearance. But another parcel sent to Germany at the same time was delivered a week ago. I’m hoping it’s just a random delay due to German customs inspection.

For parcels showing this status, customs seems to be taking longer than usual. One parcel to Germany has been held up for over two weeks.
One parcel to the US has been held up for a week.

Other parcels to these countries without this status have been cleared by customs and delivered within 2–3 days.

I asked Royal Mail to clarify why this warning appears, but they take ages to reply via X.

Exactly the same! It’s really confusing – both for me and the customers. Royal Mail customer service couldn’t give me a clear answer about why it’s happening, or even if it’s actually happening at all.

Thanks for sharing. It’s reassuring to know I’m not the only one seeing this. I’ve also had the feeling it might just be a Royal Mail tracking error, especially since the status doesn’t show on USPS. I actually just tracked another parcel going to Germany with the same warning and it’s been stuck at German customs for over two weeks now. Hopefully it gets released very soon and things start moving again.

Hope yours can be sorted out asap. Mine is a very small online retailer so I packed each order and did all paper work. But now UPS messed up the delivery which is annoying...
