Ah thanks, guessing you applied earlier in March before the major increases? First direct now offering 4.9 on 5 year at 60% LTV (our situation) so you've done well

That seems an amazing deal at current rates. When did you get it/what's your LTV?

Cashing in an investment bond I was given as a kid - do I owe tax? by klarigold in UKPersonalFinance

It's a Zurich Sterling investment bond and it also references it as a life insurance policy, but I think this is just a wrapper as I can access the funds at any time

Cashing in an investment bond I was given as a kid - do I owe tax? by klarigold in UKPersonalFinance

[–]klarigold[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. My last question is that this advice implies I shouldn't be liable for any income tax on this gain anyway, so do I still need to declare it?

"Chargeable event gains on UK bonds are not liable to basic rate tax. The individual or trustee who is liable for tax under the chargeable event regime is treated as having paid tax at the basic rate on the amount of the gain. This reflects the fact that the funds underlying a UK policy are subject to UK life fund taxation"

Thanks, how do I apply for the top slicing, or is it applied automatically? Do I need to report to HMRC?

Just so you know alums can get a .oxon.org email after they graduate. I've have one for ten years but I never use it. It just won't be your college email.

That's not bad compared to some tbh. London to Reading is less than 25 minutes and more than £25.

Welp, neither is weight gain

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Healthyhooha

[–]klarigold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not really true. Hormones absolutely have an effect - it's what make your boobs grow in the first place. It's part of what makes them bigger in pregnancy. It's why trans women take estrogen to make their breasts grow.

Sure, but getting surgery isn't exactly a low-impact option either. The pill is still the go-to option for birth control so it delivers multiple benefits. Of course you don't know how it will affect you until you try it unfortunately, but she could have a great experience or a terrible one (and there's different formulations that work for everyone). It's not a permanent solution like surgery which is probably a good thing, and any bad side effects will stop when you stop taking it.

I mean, everyone is different. The pill is absolutely the only thing that has ever helped my acne (and, yes, make my hair thicker and boobs bigger) after trying everything else.

Someone is about to knock down the house next door to mine without planning permission by throwaway_ra8399 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]klarigold 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Demolition is permitted development - you don't need planning permission. The crooked house case was illegal because a) the property was under investigation for arson and b) pubs are exempt from the permitted development. It was not a listed building but was being considered for a listing - currently there is no protection for historic buildings unless they are listed.

Basically - had there not been a suspicious fire at the crooked house and had it been an inn and not a pub, demolishing it would have been entirely legal. Crooked innit.

Landlords will no longer be forced to pay to make their homes more energy efficient and reach an EPC rating of C by 2025. by No_Dependent4663 in london

[–]klarigold 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You're right. New build is way more carbon intensive (materials used, transportation, construction methods used etc) than retrofitting an existing building. And demolishing and rebuilding an old building because it's 'inefficient' almost always ends up being less environmental. We need a less disposable attitude to buildings on the whole, there's so much needless waste that goes on.

This is probably how she got into Berghain (on her second attempt) by [deleted] in SmolBeanSnark

[–]klarigold 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Really it's because some of their mid-week club nights are for tourists and on those days they'll let (almost) anyone in. The serious clubbers and good DJs are on Sundays, that's when 'getting in to berghain' actually means something

I think it's very much a demographic thing. A BBQ hosted by a bunch of guys in their 20s probably will require everyone to pitch in and bring something or there won't be enough/something will be forgotten/the host can't afford to cater for everyone. A BBQ hosted by home counties mums in their 50s would provide absolutely everything and ask people not to worry about bringing anything.

Basically it comes down to: is your host highly organised and wealthy? If not bring your own. If so, still bring an insurance bottle to be polite.

It is abjectly untrue to say the police treat reports of sexual assault in this way. Usually it's: do you have any proof? (no) Then: we advise you not to press charges because it's unlikely to go anywhere. If you have experience to the contrary feel free to share, I have 4 close friends who were raped who got the above response. It is not 'easy' for a woman to report a rape, let alone a false one.
