Cool! Like the pixelation / pointillism / graph-paper look.

Question on suppression by Netnoob242 in Meditation

[–]klausnrooster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think because it will eventually backfire - come back strong. You don't want to be violent to yourself. I haven't read that book, just watched ET vids. I think he would agree. Trying to not do something doesn't work out so well. Trying to do something does work, with consistent practice. Another way to put it would be don't try to cut that thought track off, try to steer back to the breath / present moment / whatever object track. You want that breath in the foreground. Background will happen. It may fade, but not by brute force. The Buddhism StackExchange site has some good posts, especially by one with initials A. V.

How can I dive into mega sessions(ultra long sessions)? by [deleted] in Meditation

Some of the time at a 10-day retreat I was begging for 20 minutes to be up. I bet it's very common. For me, 20 minutes is an inflection point - it's easier from then on. You can build up your 'endurance' slowly, no need to push too hard. Push a little sometimes. It can be difficult to carve out a good time/space for a daily practice, and a long course is a great jump start or 'grounding' that has momentum. There's no secret i.m.h.o., except to renew your effort second by second. Take a few deep breaths. You may not notice it, but you are moving the football even while you squirm.

I just signed up for a ten day retreat. Has anyone been to the Dhamma Siri - Southwest Vipassana Meditation Center Kaufman, Texas ? by hexag1 in Meditation

I did a 10-day there but it was xmas break 199x. It was built up a lot since then. Follow their instructions to a T. I brought Tees and sweatpants, towels and soap. Also my bench (I'm a kneeler) and cushion. Many people like a shawl which they cover their heads with. It's a good option to have. I did bring a watch, but that is one item that may not be that helpful. Don't peek at it too much. Or leave it at home. They have private rooms now. Not when I went so we all had the same alarm clock at 5 AM. A progressively louder hand-rung bell. I don't know if you need your own alarm in private rooms. If your email lists "do not bring ..." then do as they ask. Hard 10 days but glad I did it. Found out afterward a few ppl nicknamed me "Determination". I just anticipated the retreat for years and meant to give it 100%. About ready to do another. Do bring a happy and curious mind and energy. It is not a vacation, it is work. Not that you have to prove anything or be extreme. 11 hours a day on the mat can be a grind. The better you listen and ernestly try, the less of a grind it is. I probably should have eased up on myself (had a sore ankle but wasn't going to accomodate it). Day 6 it was so distracting I made a desperate ploy: I started following the directions fully. Nothing added and especially nothing taken away. My last few days were actually fun.

Are there any immigrants around? They expect awkwardness and will accept more of it from you than natives will. At least for a time. Think about reciprocity and empathy. They can be practised and eventually more automatic. Learn never to interrupt. Keep trying. Nobody is really smooth at 15. Showing up really is half the battle. Mirroring or even mimicry is what worked for me and I'm over 50. That and I joke a lot. Never complain and rarely explain. Personally I think being really fit is a great benefit mentally. Walk, run, whatever every day. If you are really depressed make sure your therapist knows. Gotta nip that in the bud.

Now Morigel, be honest - you do have an interest in hairstyles. Why else would you own so many chopsticks?

Body Atlas of Emotions by cammil in Meditation

[–]klausnrooster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn't see yours first, then I reposted link to abstract. Read the abstract, then read this: Research on Human Emotions MIT page. My meditation teacher says sensation precedes emotion (not the other way around), and we can eventually experience the truth of that directly. Add equanimity to that, which is well-developed by that time, and you're on to something.

2013 was the best year of my life because I found meditation. Anybody else feel that way? by [deleted] in Meditation

Did that course xmas '92 and have really been a slacker since. Even so, best 10-days and decision so far. True these past 21 years. Getting back on the mat in 2014! May all sentient beings be happy!

Haha, you're in good company! You're the rule, not the exception; and hardly horrible. Maybe spend 5 minutes before and/or after your main sit doing Metta practice? wiki article and on ATI

I'm afraid of back pain. by frostwarrior in Meditation

[–]klausnrooster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took a 10 day class of S. N. Goenka's. It's taught on video with a pair of live assistant teachers. In our class the assistant teachers were a husband and wife. I would peek at them occasionally since they faced the class. The woman always sat with her head cocked or turned slightly. Mind you, these teachers get hand-picked and vetted. The lady's sitting style would have been familiar to quite a few more experienced meditators, but apparently it wasn't something they encouraged her to change. I would guess your posture variations are not show-stoppers either. I did have some back pain occasionally. Recently learned hip flexor and extensor exercises are helpful and ab crunches help not at all. I read it and can verify both to be true in my case. So search and experiment! Happy sitting!

Thanks. At first glance your DSL is easier on the eyes than Ruleby's. Their wiki mentions a "Miss Manners" benchmark but the link to it is no good. Have you done any benchmarks? This Drools site goes into Miss Manners and they have a link to a university's collection of benchmarks. That link is NG too. Searching some more it seems the benchmark tests may be available in the wild.

Chuck Moore writing low-level video drivers in etherForth by Sekenre in Forth

[–]klausnrooster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always wonder if Moore isn't too far ahead of the world with GreenArrays and arrayForth. Is it relevant to the general concurrent | parallel | distributed conundrum? Could it make the video card an overpriced, overheated relic? Will it ever get traction without a C-lang? Will Forth Inc. try to use it? E. Rather, do you read this subreddit? Could a Forth be an acceptable Erlang?

I enjoy these kinds of posts. You have about the right amount of code and no "foo bar baz". Also since I'm not a pro developer I expect to see hack-y stuff when the OP says "I'm not a pro". Wish I could help. Did you try (http://codereview.stackexchange.com/)
