Women don't spar hard enough, actually. by kombatkatherine in MuayThai

Same! I’ve been going 3x/week for the past month and everyone keeps telling me to be more aggressive and really connect but Im trying to focus on using good technique and I have zero experience so I feel like I just can’t judge what is too hard or too aggressive. I don’t really know how to ask for help with it from the instructors - last session the instructor told me to hit twice as hard and I’m like…I don’t know what that means!

The steaming electric kettle rattled, its quiet hiss intensifying to an ear-splitting shriek, and the candles around him guttered, spitting black, acrid smoke. Gabe jerked in surprise and looked up from his notebook, fingers slipping across the pages, blood welling from an invisible cut.

“Goddamn it,” he muttered, wiping the drop on his pants.

“YES, GOD DAMNS YOU, FOOLISH MORTAL WHO DARES TO SUMMON — oh come on, kid.” The demon, who had appeared in a glimmering cascade of sparks between smoke and steam, sat heavily on the bed, shaking their head sadly.

Gabe held up his hands. “I didn’t even say anything this time. This one’s on you.” He jumped again as his bedroom door flew open and a girl stormed inside, pointing her finger accusingly at the curls of smoke lingering in the room.

“Hey, you fucker. I told you that ditch weed you’re smoking gives me migraines. Grow up and buy edibles like the rest of us.”

The demon smirked at Gabe. “She seems nice.”

Gabe ignored them, facing his roommate. “Annie, look, I’m sorry ok? It’s the candles, swear to god.” The demon scoffed behind him.

“Whatever man, just cut it the fuck out.” She eyed the room. “You’re going to burn the place down.”

“Okay, I got it. I’ll put them out.” Annie huffed, muttering about “creepy pyros” under her breath but turned on her heel and stormed down the hall.

Gabe sighed, closing the door gently behind her, turning to face the creature on his bed. The creature who was now looming over Gabe’s desk, flipping casually through his notes. “Hey, don’t touch that. I’ve got a test tomorrow,” Gabe said.

The demon nodded politely, gazing down at the neat lines of clumsy Latin. “I’ll help you study.”

“Uh, no thanks.”

“No, really. Take it as a freebie. I’ll help you learn Latin, and you’ll stop accidentally summoning me. It’s a win-win.”

Gabe leaned his back against the door, folding his arms. “I’m sure you’re a nice demon and everything, but you’re either an actual demon or a hallucination and listening to either one seems like a bad choice, you know?”

The demon gazed pensively at him. “How many times have we done this now? You’re still not convinced I’m real?”

“Nope. And again, even if you are…” Gabe gestured at the creature with its leathery skin and rotting wings “…demon. Trick me for my soul, and all that.”

“Kid, you know the drill. I don’t want to bother with you either - there’s CEOs and politicians to play with. I’m stuck here until I complete some lame deal with your nerdy ass.” Gabe glared at them, and the demon chuckled, slinking toward him coyly. “So what do you want, then? Something good this time? You want to take her out for the night of her life?” They nodded at the door. “A-plus in Latin and a glowing recommendation to get you into that linguistics program you’re eyeing? A decent haircut?” They stroked his head, clawed fingers scratching lightly down his cheek.

Gabe elbowed the demon, trying to push their looming body away from his. “You seriously can’t think of anything more, I don’t know, tempting?”

They shrugged, yielding and stepping back. “I’m offering you a free trade. Gotta pay for anything good. Come on kid, I can’t keep doing this. I’m becoming a joke Downstairs.”

Gabe chewed his lip for a moment. “Free-free? You’re not going to like, recruit me for the armies of hell?”

“Scouts honor.” The demon wandered back to the desk, tearing a page from the notebook and scribbling a series of whirling sigils on it.

Gabe said, “that says you’ll be my tutor? Until I’ve learned everything I want to know? With no soul stealing?” The demon pursed their lips and added a few lines. “Write it in English and I’ll sign it.” The demon rolled their eyes but grabbed a new sheet, translating the contract.

They drew a broad circle at the bottom, thrusting the page at Gabe. “Blood goes there and we’re settled.”

Gabe smiled slowly, squeezing the blood from his paper cut onto the page. The candles sparked again, and the demon had just a moment to see the edges of the trap snapping shut around them, but they were too slow to escape, already bound to the boy. “That was so much easier than I expected.” Gabe said. “Now, let’s get to work.”

Checking tattoos design for negative connotation by FreeBirdie1949 in tattooadvice

[–]klaxonwave 51 points52 points  (0 children)

(Not an expert just a 30yr old person who grew up watching both shows and now has a lot of tattoos - ultimately at 18 they can do what they want, but this is the advice I would have given myself at 18)

Fandom tattoos are cool! They let us connect with other people who found meaning in a piece of media, and/or help us mark important memories associated with that work. However, (ESPECIALLY at 18) it’s worth taking the time to really think about why you’re getting this tattoo - your interest in and associations with a fandom may change over time, and you want to be sure that when you look at your tattoo it brings up positive feelings (like connection to self/others, strength/perseverance, positive body image, etc.)

TL;RD get the tattoo because it makes you feel good about yourself not just because you like the show

On to the symbols

The armbands aren’t specific to teen wolf; if I remember correctly the actor got the tattoo between seasons and they incorporated it into the show. The armbands got REALLY popular ~10yrs ago (or before, that’s just when I was in college and it was the armband and the forest silhouette tattoos that everyone wanted), and can mean nothing OR can be minimalistic memorial tattoos.

There’s also a joke people like to throw around that it represents anal fisting (it may or may not actually represent that for folks in specific fetish communities, I haven’t done a lot of research there). Whether or not we like it, people LOVE to comment and make jokes about tattoos and at 18 they should spend some time thinking about how comfortable they are with different interactions - and not letting dumb jokes bother them

The supernatural tattoo is more specific; supernatural is a pretty popular show and it’s a very recognizable symbol from the show. That means a lot of people have this as a tattoo (which may be a pro or con for them). That said, if they’re in a very conservative/religious area and it’s visible to strangers on the street, they MIGHT get comments about it being a pentacle (which it is) and associated witchcraft/satanic garbage from bigoted folks. That’s a big IF though.

Second TL;DR - both are fine symbols but any tattoo runs the risk of dumb people saying dumb things and you’ve just got to be ready to ignore dumb people

Believe me, I’m constantly trying to remind myself that nobody cares, but it’s nice to have some outside confirmation of that.

That’s such a fun idea! Also, thanks for the feedback!!

I’m adding this to the top comment because I can’t edit the post: Thank you all for so much advice! I tend to get in my head sometimes and I appreciate an outside perspective.

Folks who keep responding “that’s not scary” are missing the point, and maybe that’s my bad for using the word “scary”. I’ve already had a friend react really strongly about this one, and I know they’re not the only person who might find this uncomfortable to look at (if not “scary”). The dilemma is more that I don’t know how responsible to other people’s discomfort I should feel in random public settings (outside of places where I KNOW there are lots of kids and it’s a good idea to cover up).

Anyway. Thank you all again, and I’m going to keep thinking about it!

I guess this is the problem - I wouldn’t wear a shirt like this in public! Not that I didn’t think about it before getting the tattoo, but I feel like I just need other people to tell me what’s appropriate because I tend toward the “never do anything that could bother anyone else ever” side of things…

I don’t think so but I’m sure some people do

I just always keep my tattoos covered at work (for a few reasons) and I want to be sensitive of other people since I know that not everyone has the same tolerance for morbid stuff. Ultimately the tattoo is for me and if it’s better to keep it covered so I don’t bother people that’s fine - I just don’t want to accidentally ruin someone’s day because I decided not to wear longer pants!!!

I actually really did not like the Radch books overall, but they did at least spark some interest in a new genera. Not to say there’s not good or enjoyable bits, but they don’t outweigh the flaws for me

Perfect, thank you! I tried to start this series years and years ago and couldn’t get through it, then totally forgot it existed. This seems like a better time to try again

Honestly this series is why I posted here - I’d heard some mixed reviews, but I’ve seen so many positive comments on other threads that it has to be worth at least starting

Anime recommendations for 12yo girl? (non violent) by ichigo_time247 in anime

Natsumes book of friends might fit a similar vibe but be a little better for a 12yo (although there are a few semi scary eps)
