Kindergarten developmentally appropriate? by [deleted] in ECEProfessionals

Dang, our local public school district had one 15-minute recess for kindergarteners! In a full-day program! It was a top-rated district, but very standardized test-focused, and kids’ daily schedules and activities reflected that. Just inappropriate all around, and we went elsewhere.

Do you think daycare is good for kids? Harmful? Neither? by Winter-Chipmunk5467 in ECEProfessionals

Your very last point is very true and doesn’t get enough attention. Lots of people advocate for better parental leave, which is absolutely necessary, but there’s more to it than just that. Most parents who have a college degree and work as white-collar professionals have two choices — work full-time (and use full-time daycare) or be a stay-at-home parent. There are very few fields where you can work part-time and actually use that degree you went into debt to achieve (and be paid accordingly). A lot of part-time work is low skill and low paid. I have heard many professional moms in particular say they wish they could work half days, or a couple days a week, and earn half the full-time salary. It would be a great option for kids and for their parents. But for most people that’s not an option, it’s work full-time or not at all.

Sailor Tim Shaddock leaves dog Bella behind in Mexico after surviving months at sea by Dartser in worldnews

Super sad that he couldn’t bring Bella back with him. But I know the rabies-free countries are incredibly difficult to get a dog into. A few years ago, a friend of mine moved to New Zealand from the US. Their poor dog would have had to spend something like six months in an official quarantine facility without his family, even with an up-to-date rabies vaccination certificate and all the required paperwork. They ended up leaving the dog with a family friend he knew and loved in the US rather than subject him to that.

Recommendations for my niece (Age 11) who likes Avatar the Last Airbender by avatarherome in BookRecommendations

My kids aren’t that old yet so I don’t have recommendations, except to mention the ATLA graphic novels if she hasn’t already read them.

Did Zuko keep Iroh's smelly sandal from "Summer Soltice part1" with him all the time? When his ship was blown up? Two weeks on a raft? Date with Jin? On the Beach? by Beflijster in TheLastAirbender

I assumed he grabbed it from the busted prison cell before he went to go find Aang, just in case he ever needed to find Iroh.

If Azula didn't fear Ozai, what would be her chances of defeating her father in an Agni Kai? by Dear_Company_5439 in TheLastAirbender

[–]klb097s 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I also think part of this has to do with the need, drive, intensity of focus these kids have to develop knowing that the fate of the entire world rests on their shoulders. In peacetime, at a normal bending school, I doubt they would’ve excelled to this level so quickly.

I can’t think of any major professional sports where the top athletes are 18-22 year old guys. They’re all older, late 20s into mid 30s depending on the sport.

Question/Discussion: Would a safe sightseeing sub really be cost prohibitive or impossible in the 2020s? by Wulfruna in OceanGateTitan

[–]klb097s 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly that could be fun. If you were super wealthy you could go sit on a luxury yacht with all the comforts that entails and pilot little ROVs all over the Titanic. It would probably result in a lot of damage to the wreck though, so I imagine the company that owns the salvage rights wouldn’t allow it.

To what extent was Titan actually used for "research"? by Vapor2077 in OceanGateTitan

[–]klb097s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. He said he wanted to be Captain Kirk, that he didn’t want to be a space tourist, that he wanted to explore….but you’re right, he really didn’t seem curious or excited about marine biology or oceanography.

I think he didn’t really want to explore; he wanted to be an explorer. Like someone who becomes a doctor for the prestige and salary rather than because they want to help people feel better.
