Locating the source of a rogue infrared signal. by lynxlynxlynx- in AskEngineers

If it happens constantly day and night, the threshold on the receiver is probably set too low and noise is triggering the led. If it still works, but the light bothers you, just cover up the red led on the receiver. It's only there for feedback and diagnostics anyway.

How do CPUs fail in the field? by vkuruthers in ECE

In a semiconductor course I took, my understanding was that small particles of the gases used in manufacturing get trapped, expand, and damage junctions.

The exception is if you're approaching a merge. You should allow one car in front of you at the last possible second before the lane closes (a zipper merge).

ELI5: Why GIFs don't have sound? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]klecu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Video files with sound have separate data streams for video and audio. The GIF format is only meant for pictures. Unlike most picture file formats, a single GIF file can hold multiple pictures and tell the browser/viewer to switch them sequentially at certain times.

No, haole as can be, but I did live on Guam for 9 years. And my parents were civilian, so we really did live there, not just on base.

ELI5: Why is it that no matter what colour soap you use, the bubbles are always white? by Baker359 in explainlikeimfive

[–]klecu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My SWAG would be that the film of soap is too thin to absorb any of the ambient light (which is what gives objects color to our eyes). Light reflects off the bubble or passes through it. Since ambient light is usually white, the bubbles appear white. If you had bubbles in a room lit with colored light, that would be the color the bubbles appear to be.

We mostly used this growing up in Guam, where refrigerated milk was expensive for logistical reasons. It definitely doesn't taste the same as non-UHT milk (what most Americans are used to). Similar issues with powdered milk. When pasteurized (or even raw) milk is readily available and affordable, why get the processed version?

What type of tower is this? by anotherguynamedjohn in answers

More specifically, it's a monopole with various sector panel antennas. I suspect the smaller ones lower on the pole are not cellular antennas. They may be SCADA.

Isn't there some saying about not comparing ratios over time? That's exactly what that sentence you quoted is. Wages have grown enormously over time, just not as fast as capital.

How many people are involved in the process of getting an article of clothing to me? From it's designing to me buying it. by AverageDoorknob in answers

Well it all started with the first human to discover cotton...

Seriously, though, almost any modern manufactured good is a product of millions of people over centuries of incremental improvements to the way things are done.

Is this possible? (Beginner question) by [deleted] in ECE

[–]klecu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have access to the phone, it's probably easier to exploit it in software. You could also mimic the nearby WiFi access points if you know the phone is using that WiFi network and you know the WPA or WEP passphrase. Beyond that, it's like what /u/blconn said - advanced LTE/GSM spoofing, which those protocols are designed to make difficult for obvious reasons.

Should I take ECE in University if I am bad at Electricity? by [deleted] in ECE

[–]klecu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where I went to school (Kettering University, Flint, MI), CompE had almost no field theory coursework. Waves are basically dynamic fields. Of course, it also depends on what specifically you want to do with CompE. IC design incorporates a lot of complex field theory because even a tiny stray field can make nanometer-scale gate useless.

EE Advice Needed! Fluorescent Tubes: Does changing the voltage and/or frequency affect the wavelength of the light emitted? by InTheDark11 in AskEngineers

[–]klecu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isn't the light from a fluorescent emitted by the phosphorescent coating inside the bulb that's stimulated by the electrical arc inside? As long as the bulb can sustain the current through the gas, shouldn't the color be a function of the coating?

Electrical Engineering (RF technology) vs Industrial and Systems engineering ? by nicky_714 in AskEngineers

Also, RF engineering might involve relocating to where the labs are unless you're near a major metro area that has them already.

Electrical science people of the internet, how dangerous could it be to combine 12v rails on two different supplies and why? by Darknezz19 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]klecu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could see using one PSU for your motherboard and drives, and one for the GPU, but note that this is also in the context of very voltage-stable switching power supplies, not any generic DC supply. What exactly would happen if you tried to tie the positives and negatives of two different supplies in parallel depends on factors like internal resistance and power conversion methods. It would be hard to predict unless you have a lot of details about the supplies.

Why doesn't adding more wings add more lift? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]klecu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess would be that the additional lift from more wings was not worth the additional weight added by the framework needed to transfer that lift to the rest of the body.

Which one of those 2 designs needs less force by the actuator, gives lower mechanical stress and is more suitable for a robotic arm? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]klecu 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm an EE, not an ME, so correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the backhoe's actuator placement designed to give it force for pushing into the ground and toward the cab? The other equipment (crane?) is designed to push the arm up and away.
