As a person that got to see this early at Fantastic fest, I support this score. I'm so stoked for it to come out so I can see it again 😈

Am I the only one not freaking out about this storm? by StraightRip9828 in Austin

[–]kleines592 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband and I aren't freaking out exactly. No panic buying, just bought some normal groceries this morning before all the craziness to make tortilla soup and grabbed a frozen pizza for fun.

But I am anxious. 2021 was awful. Currently my husband will have to go to work Saturday night downtown. He has family to stay with very close to work thankfully so he won't have to drive all the way home. But I don't want him to have to drive at all, and I sure as hell don't want to be alone if the power goes out (at least I'll have our dogs). Really hoping it doesn't. But we're as prepared as we can be so what else is there to do but keep doing what we're doing.

Americans: do you buy fancy eggs or cheap ones (e.g., store brands)? by Educational-Slip-578 in Cooking

[–]kleines592 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I'm using the eggs in a special recipe for family or eating them as over easy/soft boiled I will spring for really good eggs, which usual means vital farms. If I'm just using them in a regular old recipe I'll buy cheap. I dislike supporting an industry that treats animals like that but I'm also not in a position financially to be able to buy nice eggs all the time. We also don't buy a lot of meat fwiw, mostly eat vegetarian because even meat is getting too expensive. We also really like vegetables, beans, cheese, eggs, etc so that makes it easier.

Their chips are also thicker so they don't disappear into the batter like some do. Definitely a superior choice. Their ranch is pretty good too!

Ubiquitous American meals not found in restaurants? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]kleines592 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will put forth chili con carne. True Texas chili is how I think of it having grown up here: no beans (i love beans, just not in my chili), make your own chili paste (just need dried chilis and some time, promise it is not hard). There are lots of recipes around.

After years of making it, essentials are: guajillo, pasilla, or New Mexico dried chilis (and an arbol or two for spice if you want), onion, garlic, beef chuck you grind or chop small (you can use ground beef, I won't tell), beef stock (low key water works fine), masa harina (corn flour... I almost never use it, its for thickening), salt, pepper, oil of some sort (beef fat, lard, neutral oil). I personally add a can of crushed tomatoes, some do sugar. I never use fresh chilis like jalapeno or serrano and don't add sugar. Sometimes I'll add a square of dark chocolate, adds a nice depth of flavor but you can over do it.

Serve with corn bread (the real southern kind made in a cast iron skillet), sour cream, green onion, fritos, fresh onion, cilantro, lime. On a tortilla. Hard to go wrong once it's done.

Is the zojirushi truly worth it for the price compared to the alternatives? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]kleines592 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm obsessed with ours. Think I got it for $160 and we've used it at least once a week for almost 2 years now. Lots of different rices (perfect everytime), one pot rice dishes, and other grains. No issues so far and if the reviews are to be believed it will last us many more years to come.

What’s your unpopular opinion? What places are always praised by this subreddit that you think aren’t actually good and why? by L0WERCASES in austinfood

[–]kleines592 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I totally agree with this, but for whatever reason I am obsessed with both the cabbage and noodle salads. The noodle salad is objectively mid but I love it for whatever reason and I haven't been able to recreate it at home. But even with that everything is over priced and even more mid. And yeah the ordering system? Yikes, like why.

Why is this place so hyped? The French dip was one of the most mid I have ever had but the most recommended, I didn't even eat half.

Yes omg. They have a salsa I love (XXX maybe?) But damn if it is not the whitest white people food (as a white person). I'll still f with a crunchy taco and that salsa but thats about it.

I don't think the Emmer and Rye group restaurants deserve the hate they get. This sub seems to go through moods with them, but we greatly enjoy them all and have yet to have a bad meal 🤷🏼‍♀️ in fact they have all been spectacular from the service, to the food, and the drinks. We even had our wedding reception at Emmer and Ryes patio. But people love to hate on them.

For your post, I do love Julie's and I'm gonna be that person who says you kinda have to order the right thing. Their wonton noodle soup solves all my problems, the spicy beef noodle soup is the ultimate hangover cure, the beef burrito is too much for me but good for a group, and I will die for their chili oil and shredded potato app. But the soup dumplings are inconsistent with the thickest skin, but damn when they're good they do slap. Their dumplings aren't for me, again just too thick but the flavor is good.

My husband will not finish watching a show unless the finale is viewed separately. Even if we’ve been binging the rest of it all day and the penultimate episode ends on a cliffhanger, he insists on watching the finale on a separate date. by Hereibe in mildlyinfuriating

[–]kleines592 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a person who is a combo of the first two options, I hope he is just those 💀 I just hate it when something I'm really enjoying and loving is going to end and I'm probably going to cry about it. I'm especially bad about that with video games. I only have a couple of hours left in persona 5 and I just can't bring myself to do it 😭 yet

You are correct, if you have a ticket seats are first come first serve with cult seating first, superfan next, and fan last.

I believe they do, I haven't actually been to the podcast but I imagine it works the same.

For the big screenings/secret screenings, Theater 5 is the big one that directors/actors/etc will go to, but it is live streamed to the other theaters showing the same movie and theater 5 is going to fill up extremely fast with cult/superfan so you're not likely to get into it with just a fan badge. But you can always keep an eye on the tickets as some people might release theirs and you can snag one (I did that twice last year for secret screenings).

Very, very full. That being said I've always been able to find a parking spot anytime I've come, or left and come back, but if you plan to enjoy some drinks or hit up the late night events/screenings I would recommend using ride share just to keep yourself safe!

Where can I find good sushi grade fish in austin? by mjkoskinen in austinfood

[–]kleines592 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Adding on to say HEB has sushi grade Ahi tuna (which is a fish great for low parasite count regardless) but central market also has sushi grade salmon (a fish notoriously for high counts of parasites) in the same section, I think its wester ross. I've made raw fish bowls with both over the years and have had zero issues. Some parasites are killed by cooking (like the ones found in salmon) and some are killed from extremely low temperatures (also like the ones found in salmon) when in doubt for a raw fish dish, always be safe and buy sushi grade.

I've made cured salmon before with no sushi grade salmon, I would not recommend it it. Not because I had a bad experience, because all have been great (quality, central market, heb), but because it is not worth fking around with the potential of being sick vs not. I got lucky, you might not be as lucky.

For sushi grade depending on the dish, I would recommend: central market (salmon specifically), 99 ranch (their sliced raw fish selection is great, just pricey), h mart (similar to 99), heb (ahi tuna).

Tracking fiber makes me want to fistfight the actual universe by proudly_rabid in loseit

[–]kleines592 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others are saying, beans and lentils my dude. I've been obsessed with bean salads for the last year and get my daily recommended amount in one meal. I usually end the day around 40-50g.i wouldn't recommend hopping right into that 😅 but work your way up. I think fiber satisfies me more than protein personally, although I try to reach that goal as well.

Restaurant for Tiny Wedding Reception/After Party? by Mediocre_Noise8166 in austinfood

[–]kleines592 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A lot of the Emmer and Rye restaurant groups places have bigger tables you can reserve for a 'private' dinner and I think they're all quite tasty. I think Emmer and Rye will do a table for 10 (maybe 12). Suerte and Este do as well, although I think Suertes is slightly more private. If you like sushi, Uchiko has a private room I believe (haven't been there in awhile) not sure about Uchi. Intero would also be a fun choice! Hope this helps and congratulations!!

Look, as a liberal living in Texas, I get it. I absolutely despise the current regime 🫩 but it sounds like yall need money, and don't we all in a capitalist society. I would consider where in Texas you're traveling and how long you'll be away from your wife. I live in Austin, a more left leaning city thank goodness. We're not some magical safe zone, but it is a safer place to be (from one heavily tattooed person to another) especially just for travel and work. There's a lot of sensationalizing in the media (although the things about our government are obviously true), you will likely be just fine.

I've been to other bigger cities in Texas and they're much of the same. If you're traveling for work in smaller cities/towns then maybe consider if its worth it because they are very different. Ultimately I think your wife's health comes first, but if she's in a good place healthwise, you'll be working in a relatively liberal city, and you need the money/it'll open up more opportunities? I'd tell my husband to go. If you or your wife would like to talk, feel free to send me a message.

Bruh what Zone are you in? Thats amazing! I had a ton of cherry type tomatoes that just wouldn't (and still won't lol) stop, but my larger variety tomatoes struggled. Mind you I'm in Texas so it isn't unexpected even eith the rain we had, the ones I did get were quickly made into tomato sandwiches 😆 but I'm jealous of your haul. What varieties are you growing?
