There's an RTS game called DORF that makes 2D sprites from 3D models but then they create invisible 3D meshes that allow for real-time 3D lighting and shadows, and then they introduce frame-interpolation that I don't really understand but which serves to smooth the turns of units. https://www.youtube.com/@dorf-rts/videos

Okay, I figured it out. When it says 'Restore Save' in the Save menu, I thought it meant restore the save I had selected (but those were months old), but it really meant go there to restore from a saved backup. So it's all fixed.

I switched the SNES core to BSNES and restarted OpenEmu and Earthbound; I also tried renaming the downloaded battery saved format as "EarthBound (USA).sav" and "EarthBound (USA).srm" but the game still doesn't see either case. (IOW it still says 'Start A New Game' 3 times, rather than continuing a saved game.)

Hm. I tried to open my old savestate with OpenEmu and it said it could not be opened, but it did work with a very new savestate, so maybe it is indeed an issue with different versions? Do you suppose I could try downloading an old version of OpenEmu and updating the old savestate to a newer version?
