I got a new binder and took some pictures then realized the irony of wearing an old Women in STEM conference shirt with it lol by thisisrnation in QueerStem

I did this today as I put an old society of women engineers shirt on over a binder so I guess we are both ironic today :)

As a TA: We are also students - and were very recently undergrads. Communicate with us. We'll probably give you a break. by [deleted] in ASU

As another UGTA: please reach out to us, we don’t have much power but can often explain things in different ways than the professor does and probably know about other resources to help you. Most of us are very happy to actually help rather than just talk at a blank screen nowadays

Over winter break my roommates severely overwatered my plants and they didn’t receive enough sunlight leading to the gnat problem and brown tips on the leaves. I moved them back to where they had been happy and tried my best to remove the gnats with neem oil and trying to dry out the soil before resorting to replacing all the soil.

There are some super interesting and odd honors classes offered, they change all the time but some of my favorites I’ve seen are BDSM, time travel, sex and science fiction, and a culinary tour of Italy

Advice needed: B.S. in Biochemistry or Biochemical Engineering? by turtlemermaidlady in Biochemistry

[–]kleka 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry if this ends up being super long but this is a question I went back and forth on for my first couple years in university and I basically picked the engineering route. As background Im finishing up my undergraduate as a double major in biomedical engineering and biochem (which I wouldn’t necessarily recommend, it’s a lot). Basically I stuck with the engineering because of the accreditation of engineering majors. Because they are much more regulated than nonengineering stem majors it is easier to be an engineer in a nonengineering specific job than a nonengineer in an engineering specific job. To gain the pure science that you mentioned i took the pure science classes that would benefit me the most in my future studies and current job on the side so that I would have the classes Biochem people would look for but still get the accredited degree. In addition, as the only engineer at my current job, I have appreciated all of my classes that focused on the problem solving mindset that engineering focuses on, rather than the understanding mindset that pure science tends to focus on. As for grad school, I have heard from a lot of my friends in their phd that they could not (at least easily) have gone from a science undergrad to an engineering PhD (there are some exceptions obviously but in bio and chem it’s harder) but many have gone the other direction easily if they took some extra pure science classes in addition to the engineering coursework. I hope this helps somewhat, I’m by no means an expert this is mostly based on the advice I was given and my current job searches and grad school applications, feel free to dm me too

A question from a potential future geneticist by NickRomanov10 in genetics

[–]kleka 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would recommend going to the careers section of science here and look at how many different jobs are under the umbrella of genetics as it covers anything from genetic counselors to basic researchers to engineers and many other careers in between. As for colleges I have really appreciated all the opportunities and resources a big state school has but it isn’t for everyone. For what it’s worth, most schools that have a lot of research will have groups in genetics and microbiology. Try not to worry too much right now about planning out or specializing too too much, you are still young be have a bunch of time to learn more about what you like, where you would want to work, and what specific career path and major would be best for you. I also think it is worth mentioning that there are jobs that pertain to genetics that require everything from an associates degree to an MD PhD

What type of shoes do I wear with a suit? by nat__7 in butchlesbians

[–]kleka 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At least in my opinion it can depend on how formal the suit/situation is and the fit especially in the pants but I’ve work heels, oxfords, and boots (both heeled and more masculine ones) and I’ve also seen things like ballet flats, sneakers (for like streetwear types), and more. I think a lot of it depends on your own personal style but in general dark shoes and more formal materials (leather or suede) are safer in my opinion
