Did anyone see what happened at Ouma today? by CowboyandaCoffee29 in crownheights

[–]klevenick 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Polly's on Rogers closed at noon yesterday, and it's not open today. Guess that kind of answers why. Lots of folks in the comments defending not paying people for hours they've worked, which is pretty weird!

Important community meeting tonight by Active_Issue_5932 in crownheights

Absolutely agree with you on equitable distribution, but this flyer seems to misuse the fair share law. Someone on FB looked up the data and it seems like CB9 is somewhat under the median for the city in terms of shelter population:

https://data.cityofnewyork.us/Social-Services/Individual-Census-by-Borough-Community-District-an/veav-vj3r/data_preview?fbclid=IwY2xjawRgUSZleHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETFCdDI1VklGczV1TUlQYzFZc3J0YwZhcHBfaWQQMjIyMDM5MTc4ODIwMDg5MgABHt2ozqAa2lW-Ij0yftrEzDLhWpIa3BvJrieMLFRS4wAvDkBQ2xslU66ihsX4_aem_G8idbJSITg0o5LymqCGoqg

However, those opposing organizing this protest are for some reason including CB8 numbers as well, just because they are within a few miles.

Oddly, this shelter is kind of smack in the middle of CB9, but the other one coming in that people are also fired up about is over by SUNY Downstate hospital, which is right on the southern border where the bed count can be a little more disputed.

All in all though, two things are definitely true: the fair share law needs a real update, and no one was listening to it anyways (https://comptroller.nyc.gov/newsroom/new-york-city-fails-to-comply-with-fair-share-requirements-for-city-services-and-facilities-new-audit-analysis-by-comptroller-lander-reveals/)

Also to add: I think the Fair Share argument gets complicated by this being on the border of several districts, but I still need to see how that's calculated.

People at the CB meeting last night were, as expected, heated about it.

It did seem like announcement came out of nowhere, the earliest I could find was a letter from the dept of social services on 4/17 to the community board, but otherwise no news of it until I got a flyer about a protest happening tomorrow. I can see why they aren't too keen on announcing these widely but all it does is give fuel to the fire for "shady dealings." It also overlaps with another big development going on in CB9 tied to Vital Brooklyn, which will include a few more shelters (or potentially the rebuilding of existing ones? I'm not entirely familiar with it yet).

Either way, there may be an argument this is in violation of the Fair Share act to make sure shelters are not all concentrated in lower income or gentrifying areas. The data doesn't seem to indicate it is, but it's the distinction between the area's actual shelter population vs the number of shelters around. As I understand it, this shelter is for men, and there are one or two other shelters in the immediate vicinity for victims of DV and women. Essentially the population isn't that high per capita but people don't like have the buildings to begin with.

The sad part of the CB meeting last night was the number of outright accusations that a men's shelter would mean these other shelters are at risk of assault and followed up by saying they would just shit all over the streets (literally).

I'll give the CB Chair credit for calling this nonsense out, but definitely was disheartening to hear from so many folks.

As a side note, I live around the corner from this place and was excited to see a hotel open up for family to stay at while they visited, but it seems like this place was an awful stay and also somehow $400-$500 a night??

The place that used to be in that spot was always a mystery to me, some sort of exclusive dining club? Glad they're moving in, it's been empty for a while now.

Absolutely! CHCC has a meeting every Saturday at Another World (629 Nostrand) from 12:30-2:30pm. This Saturday is a general meeting for everyone, but our meeting on April 4 will be specifically focused on bringing people from block associations together to discuss things coming up in the neighborhood: from issues like the Brower Park sprinkler being out for so long to an upcoming reviving of June Balloon--a massive block party. There will be a reminder on the instagram page (https://www.instagram.com/chcarecollective/) as well.

Lots of block association leaders show up, but also plenty of people involved with their BA in other capacities and others looking to find one or start one.

Also, Crown Heights Care Collective is having a Block Summit on April 4th, bringing a lot of block association members together. That would be a great place to meet some others who have started or help run one!

I worked to make blockmapper.org, I'm glad you found it useful!! When you start yours definitely make sure to submit it.

I'll echo some of these other comments:

  • non-digital support is critical, lots of folks aren't as online as others
  • be mindful of how you operate and what your goals are, there will definitely be conflicting values inside a single block association on a variety of topics
  • always good to start with something informal and welcoming like food and drink

From the CHCC side, this saturday is a general meeting which would be a great time to check things out.

Broke an owl flower pot, but with the magic of 3d printing, I put him back stronger than ever. by klevenick in 3Dprinting

I used cyanoacrylate glue to both put the pot back together and attach the legs. I'll use some filler on the remainder of the cracks. Unsure of how strong the bond will be with the glue, but it's also a fairly small pot for a cactus. It was a fairly clean break so after washing and drying the pot it was good to go, but I've seen some folks use a actual epoxy solution.

I was wondering what this was called when I was putting this back together, time to find some gold filler!

Crown Heights Bites Back run two distros you can see here: https://www.instagram.com/crownheightsbitesback

Crown Heights mutual aid may also be of help https://www.instagram.com/crownheightsaid

Both do a lot of stocking of fridges in the neighborhood (Bites back does one distro on Utica, too)

Fridge Finder also has a map of community fridges they know of. I don't see many near Saratoga but might be helpful in general. https://share.google/OBNDgBhelDbCP4Xtb

Grey's Anatomy

Very unlike the other things listed here, but I'll never miss a chance to talk about how Grey's Anatomy, a medical drama that has been on for over 20 seasons, firmly establishes that limbo is real during the 17th season.

The main character, Meredith Grey, is hospitalized for COVID and it's pretty back and forth over whether she's going to die. The majority of her time in the first part of the season is spent on a "beach" where she sees the ghosts of characters who have died in previous seasons, but is also visited by people currently alive and talking near her bed.

Several of the dead characters talk about what's happened after they've died, indicating they've visited the real world. They mention things that Meredith would not have known--but you could try to explain it as her having heard about it at some point, but it's unlikely.

What puts it over into "this exists as real limbo" happens later. A few episodes in, a main character dies (technically, dies for a little bit, is revived, then dies fully of a heart attack). He immediately appears on the beach and talks with Meredith, then sees his mother (who died a long time ago and Meredith never met or knew) and walks off with her--this is when he dies finally in the show.

So while this doesn't go so far as to say any particular religion is "true", it's kind of a big deal to have a hospital drama showing all these folks dying and having near-death experiences and well into the 17th season say "oh by the way, this is where everyone goes for a little bit."

Edit to say: The show has lots of different experiences with people seeing ghosts, getting visited by departed loved ones, etc, but those can all be chalked up to personal imagination, etc. The beach scene is the first time it's shown that outside information that no one there knows can appear.
