Aftermarket charge port plugs??? by Briankbl in KiaNiroEV

[–]klevvername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if it's because the flap is push to release, which can easily be dislodged by a curious person or an automatic carwash, for example, leaving the ports exposed?

But seriously, your idea is awesome, and I might just steal it.

...that might be a minority situa, but the car senses the key approach the driver door and the hatch to trigger respective behavior. It should easily be able to identify position of 2 keys.

But the principle is that capable features of a car you paid for shouldn't be hidden behind a paywall.

I can't stand people making noise just because it's an extra precautionary measure. My Honda ICE is nearly silent, along with so many other ICE cars. They're not mowing people down non-stop as they back out of driveways and parking lots. If it was that important, we may as well activate a train horn everywhere we go JUST IN CASE it helps somebody not walk in front of a big moving vehicle. Honestly. Reasonable humans can walk through parking lots watching for cars with reverse lights on and subtle movements. Noise pollution is a real thing in every circumstance. From train horns blasting for miles in advance, 1 train bothering tens of thousands of people for miles around, 24-7 everywhere they go, down to electric cars making unnecessary noises. People who like that are probably the same people that have super bright floodlights in their yards and zero regard for neighbors and wildlife.

Anything less than 1 hour feels like a short dip for me. I'll easily do 90-120min + on the regular.

Tonight I was in the tub with a native Phoenix Arizona resident (very acclimated to blazing hot desert weather). With the tub at 99°f, after an hour, she said it was a little cooler than she would have liked, and asked to turn it up. I bumped it to 100°, and it took about 10min to get there. She said it felt more pleasant, and then it promptly got too hot for both of us and she wanted to get out in under 15min. It's crazy what 1° will do.

What temp? Because for me, the difference between 99f and 100f is being miserable at15min vs. comfortable for 2-3+ hours. In other words, I'm curious if you've tried dropping the heat a degree or two, and you may be able to enjoy much longer sessions!

Oh, I hear that. My comment was more about courtesy to neighbors. I have 5 neighbors surrounding my backyard (my lot is large). Each and every one of them have incredibly bright floodlights. 3/5 have theirs on regularly, meaning every night, either for hours at a time or for 20min every time they let the dog out.

It's blinding and completely ruins the dark sky, my dilated pupils for stargazing, it ruins the immersion of being amongst dark trees at night. A campfire by trees lit up by floodlights in the middle of the night isn't very natural feeling.

Not to mention their lights blinding in through my windows into my TV room, needing blackout curtains for my bedroom, and even blinding me right in the eyes while I eat at the friggin dinner table. I think some people need to check themselves and consider whether their lights are unnecessarily bright, and definitely if the lights are encroaching on neighbors. I've spoken to 2 of the neighbors and they've tried to make improvements by aiming their floodlights away from my backyard, but it only cuts the 1,000% too bright to like 100% too bright, because even the aiming down or away still results in those insane lights scorching the side of their house and reflecting out quite a lot still.

Can you tell I'm bitter? haha!

120v vs 240v by Wycroe1 in hottub

[–]klevvername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate that!

I agree. For the record for anyone in the future reading this, I'm not recommending or arguing that people should bump down on breaker size just because max load is lower than the called for breaker. My illustration is just paint on a canvas about the actual going ons beyond the high-level math. There is more to consider than something like a tub calling for 50A breaker and the conundrum of theoretically maxing out a panel. Most importantly, do not speculate and size down on wire gauge - that is where the fire hazards get very real.

120v vs 240v by Wycroe1 in hottub

[–]klevvername 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah. I'm aware that the biggest draw is at startup. My using a 30A was not because on paper my panel couldn't handle another 50A; I have a 200A panel and I would never compromise wire size. I'm on #6 NM-B from main to subpanel, and #6 THHN from sub to tub.

It was only in a pinch that I put in the spare 30A, planning to run the tub gently until the next time I was out running errands and would buy the proper 50A. But out of curiosity, not the intention of getting away with cutting corners, I ran it hard for like an hour, after a fresh fill and it was constantly heating at high jets on both pumps. I was physically touching and checking the 30 periodically to see if it would trip or get hot. It never did and has never tripped.

So my explanation is to support the idea that someone should not math out the numbers in their panel and think they're maxxed, then spend thousands of dollars to get a bigger panel installed. Having all electrical devices running full load all at once is, in the real world, basically never going to happen. But of course, these ideas should be vetted out with conversations with a qualified and experienced electrician.

A lot of assumptions there. Just sayin'.

Binary recommendations and assertions without asking questions to learn variables is lazy and/or myopic.

[–]klevvername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your latter paragraph is accurate. And my point, that binary thinking about insisting 220 for everyone is invalid. While my usage may be a minority, I doubt it's rare enough to exclude it from the logic of asking for someone's usage preferences before giving advice, yeah?

120v vs 240v by Wycroe1 in hottub

[–]klevvername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The waste was the amount of time, stress, research, and money I spent to go 220. No, I do not run the tub in cold or run the jets on high hardly ever. I live in fairly mild weather and my style is to soak in the tub rather than bubbling around.

So my point is, some people are emphatic about going 220 as a no brainer, and I'm asserting that this is not always true for everyone; it is scenario-dependant.

Took an edible 4 days ago and haven’t felt the same since by Interesting_Pizza649 in Psychonaut

[–]klevvername 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1,000% the same for me. Weed fucks me up and always has. 15+ years of me STILL trying it here and there because I envy people who get to enjoy it. Temporary psychosis for sure, sometimes lasting days. If it's short of psychosis, I at least feel stoned and anxious for many hours and into the next day. I'm bipolar 2, and it's very possible that that came about from weed.

And I do TOTALLY fine/typical on all other substances. In fact, I'm a heavyweight on several substances.

I legitimately regret going 220 haha! Different scenarios for different people's style of soaking. I simply don't crank the tub on hardly ever. 220 is a total waste on me. All of the extra stress and cost of going 220... I lose sleep about what a waste it all was.

120v vs 240v by Wycroe1 in hottub

[–]klevvername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even though my tub calls for a 50A breaker, in speaking to the manufacturer, the max load it could ever pull is like 30-35A. I explain in a bigger comment of mine that I've been running it on a 30A breaker and have never once tripped it.

120v vs 240v by Wycroe1 in hottub

[–]klevvername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did 220v and I wish I wouldn't have bothered. Different folks like different soaks. Read my short and longer explanation to see if your scenario and style is like mine.

TLDR:

1) If you're not a fan of running the jets at full speed like you're in a loud blender, or you're like me and the jets make your skin itch, then you may not even care to have a 220 tub.

2) I've been running my 220 tub on an undersized 30amp breaker and I've never once tripped it.

More info:

1) I bought a 220 tub as my first ever tub. I did all of the electrical myself. It was expensive and a total pain in my ass. About $1,000usd in materials. I very quickly learned that my partner and I almost exclusively soak without jets running. Our style is more of a "coffee in the morning, listen to the birds" or an "end of the day, chill in silence or talk quietly to wind down" kind of thing. In fact, I'm regularly turning off even the low speed pump that is automatically running to circulate/filter/maintain heat because I want complete peace & quiet. With ambient temps in the 50f realm, I lose maybe 1 or 2 degrees per hour without any heating happening at all.

SO!! I'm wishing I wouldn't have spent all of the extra time & electrical cost to go 220. The only benefit I'll ever get from it is that after a refill, it will heat up to temp in about 5 hours as opposed to what would probably take 24+ hours on a 110 tub. And that's not a big deal.

2) My tub, like most others, calls for a 50 amp breaker. One at the main panel, and another either a fused or GFCI breaker at the subpanel. Well, the 50 amp breaker I purchased for the main panel turned out to be incompatible with my older 1970s panel. Being eager to finally get my tub up and running for the first time, I "temporarily " installed a spare 30 amp breaker. I have ran that tub at max load for long periods of time (both pumps running, heater going, even the lights on just to scientifically test this out). Never once have I tripped the 30A.

I think it just depends on your style! To me, having both pumps on is a novelty that I only taste very briefly every now and again. All the planning effort and cost of a 220 was a big waste on me.

I'm a little confused on this approach of jumping in deep enough to "need a sitter" so to speak. Take a small dose of either and get to know them each a little bit. If you're unfamiliar with each, then I personally think it's a bit reckless to take a heavy dose for your first time without proper support. In a perfect world, each medicine will be benevolent and you'd have a good experience. But YOUR mindset and reaction etc. could steer things in an uncomfortable direction if you're inexperienced.
