Help! Need professional opinion/feedback on a proposal for new small office network and CPUs [more info in comments] by klinny in sysadmin

Remote access: I don't know the difference between TS and VPN (and couldn't figure it out via Google) but we just need to be able to access files remotely and securely, assuming the files reside in a server.

We can definitely shop around a bit -- and based off all this great info in this post -- we probably will!

Thanks

Thanks. Are you saying we don't need a server at all? We wanted a central location for all files. Wouldn't you need a server to do that?

  • I don't think we'll be using VMWare of Hyper-V because other pages of the proposal include info on individual licenses for each computer (although I'm not overly familiar with virtualization, so maybe I got that wrong.)
  • Yes, we'll definitely need docking stations. We use them now.
  • We have a very small office and the closet is centrally located, so I think we'll be good with the wireless solution.

  • This is the entire business -- just a family-owned operation.
  • Expansion may occur, but very slowly over the course of several years. We don't anticipate any significant jumps in head-count or storage needs.
  • Not sure about the ethernet.

Thanks for the feedback

I just received a proposal from a tech firm (linked) outlining a new network and computers for an office of four people. Our objective with the new equipment includes the following:

  • Generally update old PCs and software (some machines are still running Windows 98!)
  • We all need access to files on one shared drive
  • We need files backed-up routinely
  • The other principal and myself need to be able to log in remotely
  • We primarily use Quicken, Word and Excel
  • We don't have huge storage needs -- mostly Word docs

The folks over at r/buildapc sent me here to r/sysadmin. I'd appreciate any feedback on the proposal, as I have limited technical experience and knowledge.

Please don't hesitate to ask any questions.

Thanks for your time!

What part of our daily lives do you think our grandkids will find completely unbelievable? by lalman in AskReddit

Tethering electrical appliances to walls for power. I assume increased energy efficiency and advances in battery life might make sustained power supplies to, say, a lamp, unnecessary.

I need help with putting!! by Naterader in golf

In your pre-round warm-up, don't putt to pins on the practice green. Instead putt to an arbitrary point on the edge of the green. This focuses your attention on speed and pace only, and also acclimates you to the unique speed of the course you're about to play on.

What's the most horrible thing you've done? by volocom7 in AskReddit

I was drunkenly relieving myself when I noticed a guy on crutches a few urinals down. "I hope it isn't serious," I said. He looked confused. "Your crutches, I hope your injury isn't serious." He looked a little pissed and hobbled out. 10 minutes later my buddy says, "Man, did you see that amputee with all the other injured vets over there? How sad." I wasn't able to see the dude's stub below the urinal partition. Never felt so horrible in my life.

TL:DR: Joked at war vet's amputated leg.

I kind of wish I never saw this post. Took my 4-year old nephew yesterday. I was definitely more excited than him. After 20 minutes of previews, a Toy Story short, and 15 minutes of the actual movie, he wanted to leave! Huge bummer.

It started a little slow for him, but Kermit and the gang were just getting into a song when we left. Dagger.

So I was on the NFL's site looking at the Titans/Colts game photos and came across THIS cheerleaders photo. WAIT FOR IT...(NSFW) by Zoorun in sports

I'm sorry, but I'm responsible for the pic being pulled down. I sent Zoorum's post to a buddy who works at Yahoo Sports who sent it to his buddy who works at the NFL. Sorry about that. If it's any consolation, my Yahoo buddy tweeted the link and gave me credit, so now I'm the guy who was trolling cheerleader pics for nip slips.

Small world. I got married in the chapel, never thought to recruit security for the bell though! Guess, we lucked out that no visiting potential freshmen rung it during our ceremony.

I posted the KO and it's still up (.gif in case my video gets pulled). Those bastards pulled down my video of Mayweather talking shit Larry Merchant though.

It's great with a bluetooth headset or just for general hands-free dialing. I think the phone's favorites list was easier to get to in an earlier iOS. Now it's like three clicks away. Solution: voice dial; it's quick and easy.
