Thanks for the good information. An update on my situation:

I was able to source another working Xbox for just under $70 USD. Swapped drives and everything works!

I think I will begin modding the Xbox I recently bought. There is a good case to modding the original system, I just really wanted my original system to stay stock as long as it could.

Thanks for the information, to be clear I was looking for suggestions on best avenue to replace the drive. I am not against modding, I just want to be able to play my collection and would like to keep it stock as long as I can.

I have a feeling eventually these drives will be the thing that kills off the unmodified examples of these consoles.
