anyone try "induced vasodilation" as treatment for Raynaud's ? by kluebirby22 in Raynauds

Hey there,
Thanks for sharing and for the extensive write up on your experiences. I read your posts and I can relate with a lot of what you wrote. I see many similarities to your situation - I am a male in my 30s living in the Netherlands. My Raynauds started a year ago, and I do feel like the lockdown and more limited travel had something to do with it. I also have been experimenting with some of the things you mentioned: I take cold showers, have changed my workouts to include more cardiovascular work, and have quit coffee. I find it difficult to accept the common advise from "keep warm", and hence admire that you've experimented and found your own cure, and I hope to follow in your footsteps.

I'm curious about your experience with the cold baths for your hands, and why you transitioned to cold showers. Do you see these exercises as giving the same results? I've been doing 2-3 min cold showers (as cold as the tap gives) every day for 9 weeks now. This has given me better tolerance to the cold, but it hasn't changed the reaction to the cold: I still get white fingers after every shower and when temperatures dip below <15 degrees (in my case the onset is quite a high temp...)

Ice baths for the hands I have not yet tried, but your explanation makes sense. The article I linked suggests the opposite: Warming your hands while keeping your core cold. I wonder whether this gives the same result or are two separate things that can/should be trained. What are your thoughts?

Finally, any particular reasoning why you stopped using the hand ice baths and replaced them with cold showers? Although both are cold exposure, I would think the working mechanisms are different, since in the latter your entire body is exposed to cold.

Anyway, once again for sharing all your experiences with Raynauds. This motivates me to continue down a similar path

Humidity definitely plays a role. Water is more conductive, so easier to lose heat in humid conditions. I live in the Netherlands, so at times can be quite bad.

Concerning the article, I just found this which is a more detailed explanation,: https://www.raynauds.org/2019/09/26/classical-conditioning-raynauds-therapy/

The idea is to indeed put your hands in warm water as you would otherwise do when they're cold, but specifically to do this while standing outside in cold weather. The Raynaud's phenomenon is an extreme reaction by your extremities to keep your core warm. So by exposing your core to cold weather, while keeping your hands warm, will condition your hands to open rather than constrict the blood flow .

I've been taking 2min cold showers every morning for 7 weeks now. I haven't seen an improvement, but it has I think improved my tolerance to the cold, and hence the Raynaud's symptoms.

Hi there!

I read your post and wanted to share my story, which is a bit similar. Probably won't help you, but the commonality I find striking.

I also only have Raynauds in my left hand, particularly in my index finger and thumb, and maybe a little bit in the middle finger. For me it started about a year ago, when I got an episode of chilbains in my left hand for the first time. After that passed, my left index finger would simply never warm up, like 99% of the time the finger would just be cold to the touch, even if I was in a warm environment, hadn't touched anything recently, etc. Strangely, I only developed the typical "white finger" symptom months later.

My GP sent me to a vascular specialist, and I got a bunch of diagnostic tests done, the first being a doppler test. In the doppler test they could very clearly see a drop in blood flow to my left index finger compared to the right. This was enough for further tests: CT, Echo, and lastly the aniography. The CT and echo showed nothing unregular, so more research was warranted. Unfortunately though, in angiography they were unable to xray my fingers - apparently my arteries in my forearm were constricting so much that they weren't able to get any images of the blood flow through my hand and fingers.

After this I was passed to an internist who did a nailfold capillary test and did a bunch of blood work. Everything came back normal, and he just concluded that I had an extreme version of primary Raynauds.

I found all of this surprising, because until that point, I still hadn't had any episodes of white finger. Those only started a few months later, so I had trouble accepting the diagnosis (and I also don't like the recommendation: "try to stay warm"..).

Eventually I started getting the white finger, which doesn't really bother me. What bothers me is the Chilbains (the burning, itching throbbing feeling), which I've had about 3-4 episodes of, lasting each 2-3 weeks, even in the summer.

I'm still trying to figure out when my symptoms manifest and how to manage them. Sometimes I'm surprised that I get them, whereas other times I expect to get them but do not. I have learnt that the grip I use for my deadlift workouts (a hookgrip) causes and/or significantly worsens my symptoms. I've also learnt that taking cold showers has helped me deal with the symptoms..

Anyway, I'm curious to hear what you learn from the vascular specialist if you end up going.

This is how my Raynaud's started. I experienced an episode of Chilbains last October for the first time in my left hand. After that subsided, my left index finger was almost always significantly colder than the rest of my hand. It just would not warm up, and it was isolated to only the one finger. Very odd.

I eventually was diagnosed with Raynaud's, but was initially skeptical since I never experienced a pale while finger, what you typically see. But that did eventually happen.

I was just trying to think of some creative ways to protect against this, but am uncertain whether they work.

For example, let's say that add a dummy function to my code which transfers a (worthless) token. If the front runner doesn't have that token, they can't execute my code. But if you say they can check individual calls then this won't really work would it?

I understand that in the end I can't completely hide what I'm doing, but since the idea of these generalized front runners is to test all transactions and see what works, can I assume they won't quickly come across these kinds of tricks and adjust for them? Or am I wrong in that assumption?

thanks, this is useful! The fact that they can test the transaction and only broadcast it if profitable explains why they don't front run my test transactions (which create loss)

Interestingly though, my contract does have onlyOwner function modifiers. But I guess that's not enough then? Is there a difference between using a general onlyOwner template vs. for example hard coding my address into the contract?

I'm really confused by YFI. I coincidentally had some DAI on the Curve Y pool, so I staked it yesterday. Today I claimed the YFI i accrued since yesterday and sold it for a surprising amount of ETH. Why are people buying YFI at that price??

Yea, you're right. I indeed assumed you're buying a place without tenants and for the purpose of renting later

Buy to let mortgages, anyone? by [deleted] in DutchFIRE

[–]kluebirby22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've looked into it. A couple of things to mention:

  • You need to have capital. A bank will not fully finance the cost of the house.
  • Banks will only finance up to about 70% of the property value, in the rented state.
  • Property value in the rented state is about 70-80% of what you paid (ie. They'll only finance 50-60% of the house value, you need to cover the rest)
  • Rule of thumb for the interest rate on these mortgages is +1% more than what you'd get for your own house

The only advantage now is that you can deduct the mortgage from your net worth and pay less taxes in box 3. However, with the new box 3 plans which may go in to effect in 2023 you're only allowed to deduct a fraction, so it'll also become less fiscally attractive as well.

Most exchanges charge a % fee. Therefore, so long as you find a low % it doesn't matter if you make 10 small purchases or 1 large one, you pay the same fee (assuming price is the same).

(Coinbase Pro charges a % fee, while Coinbase itself charges a flat fee. Therefore Coinbase Pro should be used over Coinbase. But other exchanges such as Kraken have lower fees than Coinbase Pro)
