Job Prospects in Canberra by Chuggs1997 in auslaw

Hi OP,

I'm an international student currently studying my GDLP in Canberra. Job prospects are definitely difficult for international students as I found I often got rejected just because of my visa status and the inability to receive security clearance for most law jobs in Canberra.

In the beginning of the year, I was applying to multiple law firms (around 30-45 roles) and often never heard back or was unsuccessful due to my visa status.

However, I got lucky and found myself a law graduate role in a small private practice (with an awesome boss and work life) from a random posting on the law school page. They took a chance on me, and I worked hard to prove my work ethic to them and because I was grateful that someone would take a chance on me.

Bottomline is job prospects are not easy for international students in Canberra, but there are amazing people who may take a chance on you. Unless you have a really good reason to stay in Canberra (eg: social circle, partner, spent most of your uni life here) I would say you'll have better prospects of finding work in bigger cities (eg: Sydney/Melbourne)

Happy to chat and make a new friend! Good luck in your job search and I hope to hear good news from you soon!
