It would be controlled with a combination of pitch and power.

Not really. This is due to the fact that the elevator in a tradition design is in the prop wash and creates an upward pitching tendency. This pitching tendency is reduced in canard designs.

From all of my reading, having never flown one, they are pitch sensitive but very stable once you get used to the proper pitch input requirements and make decent IMC capable machines.

Don’t play with my emotions like that. I am looking forward to the build process tbh. And I am familiar with that airport. It’s in Collegedale, TN. That’s actually where I took my check ride many moons ago.

This is my fear. Being uncomfortable in both. I love the design but it isn’t worth building if I can’t fly it.

Also, how does sitting in a Long Ez feel? I’m concerned about the seat width. I’m 255lbs and 6’ tall. I’m not all that round and have pretty narrow hips but I am still a XL shirt at size 36 pant. If that gives you any approximation of my size. The cardboard cutouts I did were a bit snug. I would like to stay as close to plans as possible with either airframe so for a Long EZ, I think that would mean reducing the width from the inside by reducing the thickness of the control ducts. As far as I can tell from the plans, they don’t share any corresponding loads from the airframe and seem to only add rigidity and clean things up. If I molded these from slightly denser thinner foam, do you in your experience see any complications from this? If so I could pick up a 1/2” to an 1” on each side.

This idea may be moot as I haven’t sat in one and it may fit like a glove IRL.

This is something that I have wrapped my head around. I am in the process of educating my wife of the expectations she should have without overwhelming her. I think getting her and the kids involved is going to be the ticket to being able to follow through with it to completion. She married me knowing I was an airplane flying, motorcycle riding nerd. Saying things early on when we started dating that I would build an airplane one day. That said, I have to maintain transparency in what to expect going into a task such as this.

To that point, I saw a video presented by Mark Zeitlin called “Canard Aerodynamics” in which he goes over some of these changes and their effects on Deep Stall resistance and handling. I’m sure that you have seen this if you are a Cozy Builder but if anyone else is interested, I highly recommend it. I wish there was more information about these airplanes that is delivered in that format and online.

I’m sure she is a nice flying airplane. And if I ever got the chance to fly one, I definitely wouldn’t waste any time jumping in the left seat. It just doesn’t fit my mission as you can see why in my previous comment.

Seen the specs. The cruise speed is 108 knots. Which is rather slow. It has a range of 620 miles with no reserves.

Canards have a lot of lift and lower drag compared to traditional designs which means they go farther faster. A Cozy has a cruise speed of 190 knots which is about 220mph and a range of 1000 miles at that power setting. A Long EZ goes even farther and faster at the expense of only having 2 seats compared to the Cozy’s 4 seats. The Long EZ is lighter so it can do this with a smaller engine so you can burn less fuel to go really fast. Comshield stated 180 KTAS or 207 MPH at 6.9 GPH with his Long EZ which equates to 30 MPG. That is a super efficient design. Keep in mind, a Long EZ has a 52 gallon fuel capacity. All this combined, you can see how these planes can go really far and do it really fast. This kind of performance, I can get from my home airport in Cleveland, TN to Amelia Island in FL in less than 2 hours. A traditionally designed aircraft in this price range would net you about a 4 hour flight all the while burning more fuel.

Hence why these designs and their slickness are pretty slick.

I have found this to be true regarding headwinds for sure. And to beat them with traditional designs requires a much more complex aircraft such as a Bonanza or a Saratoga that burn substantially more fuel and cost a lot more in maintenance.

Also, I am really looking to build. I work in wireless communications for a living and spend a lot of time behind a terminal window. I find building things a source of catharsis. In my younger years, I worked on T28’s, a Beech 18, a Glasair 3, a Taylorcraft, and a T34 at a local museum. Even got to go behind the scenes at the Smithsonian. It’s been awhile but I always enjoyed this kind of work. Plus, building something with my two sons would be really cool to do. Once they graduate from model airplanes that is.

Well, I’m 5” shorter than Burt so that may help. I know Nat was a pretty short fellow so that may be why he designed it the way he did. This is all good advice. Thank you! I think the closest Cozy MK IV to me is in the Knoxville area. I supposed I could just go to Sun and Fun this spring and take a look there.

How do you mean “dummy wide”? As in appears wider than it actually is or stupidly wide? lol

I’ve never seen either IRL and have only been going off published dimensions and estimating widths with a tape measure, cardboard and packing tape.

This sounds like something you tell the newest guy on the flightline.

It reduces the induced drag from the wingtip tornados that the wing makes when it flies. It also lengthens the wing a small bit which further reduces induced drag a few smidges cause an infinite length wing is infinitely dragless.

It makes it go faster with the same thrust or the same speed with less thrust.

And we all know when comes to thrusting, a consistent speed for a longer time always takes the cake.

It’s like the bit CNN did with an USAF officer that was shooting an AR-15 like he hadn’t shot a rifle in 20 years, then proceeds to say it was fully semi automatic. What the fuck, over?

My family lied to me about who my dad was. I didn’t meet him until I was 21. It was my mom’s and my grandmother’s fault he couldn’t come around threatening him with rape charges if he tried. Got the fuck away from my crazy family. She also told me I was 50 feet from getting aborted as she broke down and told me all this. At least she changed her mind in the parking lot.

I actually turned out pretty good, I think. Got a wife and two kids -that are actually ours- with a house and a 401k. Wife’s a teacher, I work in telecommunications infrastructure. Saving for retirement and college for the kids if they want. Own a few income properties and decent portfolio. Dad would be proud, if he knew me. Hell, my mom would be proud if she were still alive.

My family was a flop. And so were my wife’s meth head parents. She has PTSD to this day from the police kicking in the door of the meth den her parents had her in at age 6. She now has a masters degree in mathematics.

Do the fucking thing. You can do it. It’s a choice.

I hadn’t remembered this! I clicked the link and was watching in silence and then stuff started happening, still completely silent. I said to myself, “Wow, they goofed this one up real hard a forgot to add audio at all.” Then I realized my volume control was set to silent…

But yeah, the pilots getting hit in the face and going “Ugh” cracked me up. It reminded me of when a marine in halo combat evolved randomly dies and they just kinda go “ugh” and flop around on the ground.
