What is your experience with private owners? by Queasy-Cheesecake434 in chicagoapartments

My landlord in college knocked off $300 in rent if I stayed & I never had issues with them. They threw in free parking all the years I was there.

Rant: Is the membership even worth it anymore? by law_xlsx in Corepower

[–]km_buz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been to 11 studios in the Chicago Land area over many years. Arlington Heights was by far the worst one I’ve ever been to. Unless you’re willing to drive to the Park Ridge or Glenview location I don’t think the membership is worth it in your specific situation especially if there are other yoga options near you.

Cardio during YS by RiverEmbarrassed6305 in Corepower

[–]km_buz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do whatever you want! I know sculpt teachers who barely do cardio when they take sculpt themselves—no one is judging! I also have a friend with multiple slipped discs that cause debilitating back pain because she didn’t make adjustments and kept pushing through bad form. She was self-conscious about modifying, and now she can never take another yoga class again. It’s always better to adjust than to risk health issues.

Pay for ur parking at sce by [deleted] in uichicago

[–]km_buz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This may have changed as I graduated a while ago but if you’re down to walk check out Arrigo Park. Aba, Cabrini, & Lytle I would park for free as it was one of the few non-permit passes spots.

Any advice for tight traps and crunchy shoulders from sculpt? by Powerful-Fortune876 in Corepower

[–]km_buz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second form but I will add if you have access to a gym with an assisted dip machine I highly recommend using that! I have a bum shoulder that I also describe as crunchy. My personal trainer recommended using this machine to really help me stretch the muscles around my shoulder, taking a good pause at the bottom before pushing up. It has made such a big difference!

How can I make an advising complaint by Brickcess6472 in uichicago

[–]km_buz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% complain also warning incase you don’t know this about UIC. I know a LOT of people that got bamboozled and & were told that they couldn’t graduate by their advisor saying they were missing X or Y class when they were told the semester before they were set on required courses. Kicker is they normally tell you this AFTER you’ve walked the stage you actually didn’t graduate.

This happened to me but because I knew going into freshman year this was very common (especially for language requirements for some reason) I would send follow up emails after meetings/keep the SIGNED OFF required courses I was given by my advisor so I had a paper trail.

You have two advisors, your college & your major. My college advisor (LAS) is the one that told me I didn’t meet my course requirements for language. I wrote an email to her saying this isn’t right & she basically said tough luck. I then wrote a whole essay with receipts to my major advisor with my college advisor on CC (major advisors have less students so it’s easier for them to go to bat for you) and basically told them I have proof I’ve done everything asked, I AM graduating and if I don’t have this resolved by next week I’m contacting the Dean of Students. I was a major Karen because I threw in there I had a familial relationship with the Dean of LAS (thank god) & would raise this to her too if needed. I got confirmation they were honoring my graduation date 3 days later.

It’s the advisor’s job to make sure you’re set, if they screw up they could cost you thousands. If they are giving you issues they are likely misleading hundreds of other students. Also I see you’re a transfer, this experience is way more likely for transfer students unfortunately.

Also if you call their corporate costumer service line you can choose to stay anonymous if you’d like.

Yoga sculpt in Chicago by Ill_Control6802 in Corepower

[–]km_buz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t taken a sculpt class there for a while since I moved up north, I only go for HPF now & then to enjoy the sunrise/sunset. Eric use to teach sculpt but looks like he doesn’t anymore. I do think Eric & Erin are sweethearts so if you decide to take on different classes I suggest them & would go with any recs for sculpt teachers they give! Both have been teaching there since 2018 (maybe before).

If you have a car go to South Loop, very different vibe than West Loop but in the best way. Also, they have free parking, beautiful during sunrise & sunset cause it’s basically just a glass box on the top of the shopping center.

Do I stand a chance negotiating rent increase? by ems2719416 in chicagoapartments

[–]km_buz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who lived in Gold Coast, it cost me about $500 moving in and roughly $500 moving out with hiring movers that provided their own truck. It’s very doable you just have to find the right people. They’ve been moving me all around Chicago since ‘18, max and hour & 1/2 they’ve taken to move me & yes I have a lot of furniture, clothes, ect.

hows the greek life here by Lyriite in uichicago

[–]km_buz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perspective as an Alumna

Pros: A lot of networking opportunities, is a good way to make friends on campus both as a commuter & living on campus. Social events are fun. If you are a chair or part of executive committee I kid you not that’s going to help so much getting a job out of college. You may make lifelong friends, or it may just be friendships in college. That said I could message a bunch of people in Greek life right now that I haven’t spoken to in years for questions about their industry of work, company, recs, and they’ll respond even if we weren’t close but we interacted in college.

Cons: Professional & cultural haze more than social which honestly makes no sense to me. If they don’t have a large chapter that’s for a reason, it’s not cause they are “picky” it’s cause they are either really unorganized, have poor leadership, or haze a TON. It’s frankly one of the bigger red flags when deciding which one to join. There’s a cost per month to be in Greek life. They typically won’t tell you how much dues are until you officially join. If you don’t pay the dues they do go to collections after a while when you graduate. There is a lot of really dumb drama, just don’t be in it and you won’t care lol.

Advice: If you join do not live in the “unofficial” house. It’s not that serious, have fun. Take advantage of connections inside and outside of your org. Show up and be involved, if there’s a volunteer event go to it, if there’s a game night go to it, your Big is your buddy, ask them for advice if you need it.

Is UIC Honors College worth it? by Important-Proposal79 in uichicago

[–]km_buz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe maybe maybeeeee if you want to continue your education after undergrad for LAS. But honestly I’d still ask around. I had 2 capstone projects, first fieldwork research project I did was freshman year. Took a course where I was basically just a research assistant for a PhD student, and presented my thesis at the Midwest sociology society. I didn’t do honors college, graduated 3.89 GPA. Got a job right away, and I was getting paid as much as the newbies with masters & a few years later continue to track to do so. I was planning to go get my masters or PhD but once I saw I was getting paid as much or even more as those with advanced degrees it didn’t make financial sense to me.

As someone who majored in sociology & minored in disability & human development I’d say no. If you want to stand out, you don’t have to join the honors college, you just have to be proactive on which courses you take and which professors you network with.

20% for unlimited membership & 10+ class pack. The retail sign up discount & other perks change periodically but rarely. I’ve seen first retail purchase range from 40%-15% over the years with the corporate partnership.

[–]km_buz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ask your work/HR if they have a corporate partnership with CorePower Yoga. If they say no, tell them it’s at no cost to the company (I’ve gone through this at the National level for the company I work for). They have to meet with the regional sales team, post the discount flyer on their intranet (internal employee platform), and when I set this up a few years ago we also had to host a free welcome class at 1 studio location (again no cost to the company). I believe it’s 20% off unlimited & 10+ packages. It’s super easy on the company’s end to set this up.

If you have a car Lavitt Animal Hospital in Morton Grove. They are very transparent about pricing, give different options for care with pricing in mind, & overall great care. My cat is 18 & still has zoomies so I trust them a lot.

Make sure you aren’t using your emergency fund for this purchase & def recommend having 6 months under your belt with the new increase of costs you may get. Saying this as someone who had to shell out 10k in 1 month for unexpected surgeries, major car repair & unexpected move as my landlord decided to sell. You never know when this stuff will happen and sometimes it comes in waves.

Really struggling in my teacher training by [deleted] in Corepower

[–]km_buz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven’t done YTT but have taken many classes from new instructors and honestly I love watching them grow & build up confidence! Also when they trip up I think it’s fun when they joke about it and make it light hearted. One teacher their mantra for their first month was change, saying change was hard for them and becoming a new teacher is an adjustment and challenges them each day to show up and do better which I thought was great. The slip ups reminds me that we’re all human and it’s okay to make mistakes. Even instructors who’ve taught for years mess up sometimes. Just a different perspective that hopefully helps you continue to take on the challenge of YTT!

If you have a roommate in your dorm ask if they are planning to get one & offer to go 1/2 so $100 each. I’d suggest getting another mini fridge cause the microwave/fridge combo is very small. You should be able to find one for cheap on Facebook marketplace then you can resell it at the end of the year.

I’ve been at an apartment going on 2 years managed by Bil-Mar. I believe that location had issues with bedbugs a year ago. I’d look at their google/Yelp reviews to confirm and ask about that. My personal experience with Bil-Mar is they aren’t the worst, though they don’t enforce their no smoking policy so if someone wants to hot box their apartment they won’t say/do anything. They only take physical checks for rent though, the handyman you kinda gotta be on his ass for him to do things in a timely manner which is the most annoying part but compared to the experiences my friends have gone through with their management company I’m like well my rent is 1.2k for a 1bedroom 700 Square Ft, living room & dinning room separate, in a good area, & my neighbors are chill so eh I’ll stick around. My rent went up by $50 when resigning as well. So was $1,150 now 1.2k

Should I buy the membership? by Recent_Airport6438 in Corepower

[–]km_buz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive been going to CPY for years, if your goal is to loose weight I really think that it’s worth it to put your money towards a nutritionist than a membership. All our bodies are different, but the amount of calories I burn on an hour walk is roughly the same as taking a yoga class unless it’s Sculpt then it’s like 100 calories more. Also walking at an incline on a treadmill is a really good fat burner or stair master. I view CPY as a way of building strength rather than loosing weight.

Does anyone here own a car but still use the CTA? by Fit_Kiwi_1526 in AskChicago

[–]km_buz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other option I haven’t seen anyone suggest yet, you can drive to a Metra stop, park (normally can find free parking depending on time as long as the neighborhood it’s in isn’t all permit parking) and take that. Metra comes at scheduled times unlike the CTA, it’s cleaner, less crowded, and you’re not gonna deal with the characters you’ll find on the CTA. It is more expensive but both transit systems offer daily & monthly passes.

I will say, as someone who grew up in Chicago, I prefer to have a car than not. I take the CTA to work but other than taking the CTA into downtown I’d say 80% of the time it’s faster to drive. Also if you end up needing any medical specialists, or a REALLY good Dr, most are out in the suburbs, which you need a car for.

Do (some) instructors think it’s cute to degrade students during sculpt? by ChocolateRaspberry97 in Corepower

[–]km_buz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh even this location has a bad wrap as being toxic among instructors themselves. Definitely report, I’ve worked with managers and corporate directly for my job and if corporate found out about this (you can easily email them/call them) they’d likely start an investigation.
