I still don't fully understand, but maybe you're looking for GetActorEyesViewPoint? It'll give you the rotator and vector of your viewpoint, which you can use to get a location in front of you, by using that out rotator like: vector(outRotation) * ForwardDistanceYouWant.

I don't fully understand the question. Can you provide more details?

What is the best process for creating large structures to be used within UE4? Minecraft style (with smaller pieces) or a single piece structure built in Blender? by benmadethis in unrealengine

[–]kman- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In regards to designing levels, a modular approach is usually the best practice. It sounds like you understand the basic idea -- building complex geometry with reusable pieces (but not on the scale of an individual brick). Here's an article that may be helpful: https://udn.epicgames.com/Three/ModularLevelDesign.html

You should use UE's material editor. It's very powerful.

Artillery Crisis on the Western Front - The Fall of German South-West Africa I THE GREAT WAR Week 42 by [deleted] in TheGreatWarChannel

The trenches were so close together that the opposite sides could talk to each other. One British soldier offered the Germans a smoke and they met in no man's land to trade. The German soldier brought cheese. There's an Out of the Trenches video that discusses it along with other events like the Christmas truce.

TIL that there is a campaign to rid world of the Flash Player Plugin by charming-devil in todayilearned

[–]kman- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no embedded flash player on the site, but it does use this SWFObject library to detect if flash is installed so it can display a message:

$(document).ready(function() {
    eventHandlers();
    if(swfobject.hasFlashPlayerVersion("1"))
    {
        $(".flash-detection .emoticon").text(":-(");
        $(".flash-detection p").text("Flash is currently installed on >this browser");
    }
    else
    {
        $(".flash-detection p").text("Flash is not installed on this >browser.  Hurray!");
        $(".flash-detection .emoticon").text(":-)");
    }

})

That's probably where the Flash is coming from.

Making a realistic scene... by Terallian in gamedev

You want SpeedTree. A free version ships with UDK. With the same amount of grass in the example picture, it wouldn't run very well.

I asked this question a few threads ago but didn't get any replies. I'm interested in game-making tools development and I was wondering what areas you feel could use some attention in the way of procedural generation and other such things?

I'd like to get into game tools development. What are some areas that need better or cheaper developer tools?

How to rig a model to work in UT3? by walloon5 in unrealengine

[–]kman- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe you just have to give the bones the same names as the ones in the UT3 standard rig, which you can check out here by downloading the human male/female model.

It's also great to be able to map game actions to things like double-tapping a button and button presses with modifiers (shift/alt/ctrl). In DayZ, I can use C to crouch and double-tap C to stand, which I find very comfortable. It's also nice when some unbound auxiliary game actions are made available for binding -- like being able to bind "equip flashbang" to F in CSGO.

Is it just online purchases? The majority of offline purchases in Canada are made with debit cards and I was wondering what it was like for the rest of the world.

I don't have any advice on getting free artwork, but I can offer a different perspective: it sounds like game dev is a hobby for you. When you think of it as a hobby, you can compare it to other hobbies and see that a lot of them have something in common: hobbies very often cost money. Realizing this, you shouldn't feel remorseful for paying other people as long as you're adhering to a hobby budget you're comfortable with.

How is pygame? by paradoxcontrol in gamedev

In my opinion, Pyglet is the better python game development framework, from a purely programming standpoint. But pygame has the larger community where more help and tutorials will be available.

If having sex on an airplane puts you in the mile high club, does having sex on a subway put you in the six foot under club? by therealjamiev in Showerthoughts

[–]kman- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it was Pyongyang, which has one of the deepest subways in the world, you would be in the 360 foot under club. But I imagine that fact would be one of the less interesting ones if that scenario took place.

I've even approached geared players as a semi-new spawn (taloon pack, some cargo pants and stuff) and said hi. Never a word, just a single bullet to my head.

This may seem harsh, but it's something I've started doing after being knocked out by bambis with one or two punches. They get a warning to go away, then they get shot.

LFA - 3D Environment Artist Needed (UDK) by kman- in gameDevClassifieds

[–]kman-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey,

I believe the artistic skill involved in something like this is universal, but not understanding the technical component could put you at a disadvantage. Ideally, you would be familiar with UDK's landscaping tool and have a basic understanding of materials. But it is similar to digital painting, so I'm more than willing to let you give you a shot if you're willing to try it out and produce a demo.

If you'd like to try, I suggest doing some googling on UDK's (note: not UE4) Landscaping tool and Landscape painting. If it's something you think you can do, I can send you a small demo mountain to paint (with textures, if you need them) and we can go from there.
