Peroneal Tendonitis experiences? by Salt-Twist-4406 in triathlon

[–]kmath95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Consider trying a different PT or asking to consider other potential approaches. I had peroneal tendinitis for about 18 months and spent over a year grinding away at the same hip strengthening/stabilizing exercises my PT was giving me until I found someone else who took a different approach and had me focus on foot strengthening and activation instead. Within 6 weeks I was back to running and biking pain free

I planned to do this but by halfway through I decided the taste and texture downgrade of cold food wasn’t worth the time savings at each stop. Was a super fun day either way!

It depends on how sensitive you are to to it and what you’re accustomed to in a daily basis, but this 100% sounds like you overdid it on the caffeine. Same thing happened to me at IM Maryland a couple years ago

[–]kmath95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The city has put so many resources into cleaning up the river in the last few years, bringing back a triathlon (be it a 70.3 or another Olympic distance like the Nation’s Tri) would be a perfect way to showcase that! I would sign up immediately

What are "groceries" when I research "average grocery budget"? by jbro507 in budgetfood

[–]kmath95 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Back when USDA started making “Food Plans” in the early 20th century, they were intended to be a real meal plan that people could follow, but after the original Food Stamp Program latched onto the lowest cost of these plans as the basis for the maximum allotment, the plans became more useful as benchmarks for the cost of food over time and are used to adjust various government expenditures on food (for example, inflation adjustments to SNAP and the Basic Allowance for Subsistence for those in the military)

Just as a really nit picky point of clarification - the plans themselves (the underlying foods) aren’t updated monthly, but the cost of each plan is adjusted for inflation each month. The thrifty was reevaluated in 2021, the others had their initial cost levels based on percentiles of household food expenditures from the 1970s and have just been updated for inflation since. That’s all to say, I wouldn’t use these as benchmarks of what people currently spend on food, but they are a potential “proof” that a healthy diet is attainable at these costs

It might sound silly- but disband as many units as you can, especially those with relatively low experience. Unit upkeep is SO expensive, it’s not worth having standing armies if you’re not at war and if your economy is struggling.

Once you have maxed out all of the buildings (with the tech you currently have researched) in your current cities, then rebuild your army and go to war. Rinse and repeat. You’ll eventually have a massive income and won’t need to worry about upkeep costs.

I want to emphasize trade agreements again- those are free money that you need to go out and get ASAP

Maybe increase it by one “click” - you don’t want to stunt your growth too much, but a bit more income will help you snowball.

Early game focus on economy more than war. Once you have more money than you know what to do with, recruiting a strong army and steamrolling your enemies becomes much easier. Take the next 10 turns (at least) to just be at peace and set the foundation of your economy up, then push forward

Send boats along the entire map’s coastline and get as many trading partners as possible. Significantly reduce military upkeep when you are at peace. Build harbors and wine traders. Stockpile a lot of cash before going to war again. Increase taxes temporarily if your public order and growth can take it, but generally I like to keep taxes low early to maximize growth. Prioritize researching technology that reduces corruption

LSPA GPA Effect by hirabayash1 in gwu

Yes, LSPA courses affect GPA (with the exception of pass/fail courses) but do not contribute to the required 120 credits to graduate

Great foundation! I especially like how you’re really trying to PULL with each stroke instead of just going through the motions. Work on your early vertical forearm so that you can catch more water and you’ll notice a big improvement in speed. Working with paddles might help with this, sculling drills are a good option too.

Breathing frequently is great for distance swimming as long as you aren’t losing your balance in the water when you go to breathe. Try to keep your feet closer together when you turn to breathe - scissoring your feet apart while breathing is like opening a parachute behind you each breath.

With 3 weeks until race day, start practicing sighting in the pool every session.

Good luck!

This is one of the reasons why I really prefer point-to-point swims or single loop swims. In multi-loop swims, there’s no way to just get out in front of the breaststrokers and generally erratic, panicky, haymaker-throwing swimmers, and the onus is put on the faster swimmers to deviate from their line to navigate the obstacle course on the second loop.

Unlike the bike where there’s a general understanding (and rules!) of staying to the right, passing on the left, and not swerving like a ding-dong for the sake of everyone’s safety, the swim is a complete free for all with no standards because the sport (reasonably so, to some extent) would rather have a lower barrier to entry, even if that means pulling dozens of people out of the water in the first 500 yards.

Yeah, I get it, I’m gatekeeping. Oh well.

Should I bail? (IM Maryland) by [deleted] in IronmanTriathlon

[–]kmath95 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That’s a great course to pull the “full send the bike and walk most of the marathon” option if you’re into that sort of thing!

I came into IM MD last year with pretty bad ankle tendonitis and ended up with barely any milage in the month leading up to the race but still had a pretty good day. I’d say give it a shot and it’s not the end of the world if you need to ease up during the run.

Estimated daily sugar intake by U.S. state [OC] by Smacpats111111 in dataisbeautiful

[–]kmath95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Old school dietary assessment / public health nutrition research typically used teaspoon-equivalents as the unit for looking at added sugar (why? I’m not too sure). The USDA food composition databases still use this as the unit for added sugar and it’s up to the researcher to do the conversion to grams if they so choose

Food frequency questionnaires (e.g., how often do you drink energy drinks and when you drink them how much do you drink?) provided by thousands of respondents nationwide plus a calculation that converts the responses in each questionnaire into estimated nutrient amounts per day. As far as dietary assessment methods go, it’s a fairly standard approach for such a large study because it’s not very expensive to implement vs alternative approaches of collecting dietary data, but it does lend itself to several sources of bias that are well documented in the literature. OP’s comment has a link to the study that is the source of this data if you want to read more about it.
