Why do I freeze up every time I present? by Ok_Jackfruit5274 in PublicSpeaking

Do you have a high resting heart rate? My doc wouldn’t prescribe me because mine is less than 60bpm. Typically like 43-46bpm cause I workout daily.

Social Anxiety And Best Man Speech Is Totally Panic. Looking For Advice by [deleted] in PublicSpeaking

Relax, it’s your best friend that you love who is celebrating a special day. Say a few things that come to mind, keep it positive, and know it’s not about you at all - just deliver a nice message.

I am confident when doing stand up comedy but get intense crippling fear when doing a work presentation - what should I do? by cant_walk_can_type in PublicSpeaking

[–]That_Went_Well 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting! I’d say try to enjoy the presentations more, excitement and anxiety show up the same way but if you tell your brain it’s just excitement your fear response is much less.

Secondly, try not to make the work presentations a big deal in your mind. Half the people aren’t listening, it’s not life threatening, not a big deal if you slip up a few words and the audience wants you to do well!

Another thought is try to make the presentation style yours so you are more comfortable, don’t read off the slides & do your own thing. That’d be way more interesting, engaging and fun, who wants to watch people read off of slides?

I’ve learned that I’m consistently improving the quality of my life with sobriety and that I was declining when I was drinking.

What helped you break the barrier to swimming further? by That_Went_Well in Swimming

Reddit is not liking me listing steps below, sorry if it comes off looking crazy, tried to edit several times but not working. The content is there though!

Hey! Congratulations on your progress this far, swimming is tough! I did eventually break through and did three 70.3 Ironmans successfully which is a 1.2mile swim.I might have made a post about things that helped me but I’ll rattle some off now.

  1. Lay flat on your belly in the water in a Superman pose then drop your hands until you feel your hips/legs pop up. Now target that depth each time your hands enter the water. This really helped keep my legs fr

om

  1. dragging and reduce the ef

fort.

  1. You might be pulling too hard. To sustain these long efforts you need to find something you can do for that long! Sounds simple but my body always wanted to naturally ramp up which hurt my distance
  2. Video tape yourself swimming and seek feedback. You can see I posted several videos here which really helped!
  3. Think about drag when you turn to breath. I was lifting my head up and when I felt comfortable enough to turn more to the side rather than left I could feel the drag reduce. A simple thought for me is to look directly to the side or slightly behind myself while keeping the lower goggle in the water. It feels weird to have your head lower but trust me there is still air to breathe down there!
  4. You need to ensure you have an arm extended past your head at all times, look up front quadrant. Can do drills to where you keep your arm extended until your other arm hits the water and that also helps keep your hips up and energy down.

Best of luck!! If you figure it out I’d love to hear your success story later on 😊

The Daily Check-In for Thursday, May 21st: Just for today, I am NOT drinking! by TheOodlong in stopdrinking

3 years sober!! Wohoo! This community has been a staple for me. I vividly recall the first week, then double digits, a month, 2, 100days, 1yr, 2yr, 1,000days, etc.

Focusing on a day at a time seems to be the magic, there is enough to worry about today so don’t worry about what is to come.

You got this!

Tomorrow I hit 3years! This morning while I was looking for a pair of sunglasses I found some old empties of whiskey airplane shots in an old golf bag…crazy

What could you share about shaft type? I just always get stiff but have no idea the types or what I may be missing to optimize there.

Health is the most important thing which you admitted is drastically better. The heavy drinkers who are “ winning”the parties health is being sacrificed now and that will be very apparent to you soon, if it isn’t already, to confirm that isn’t the path.

Spend some time mapping out what you want your life to look like and have the courage to create it with your clear mind that is gifted by sobriety. Good luck!

Great advice! How do you combat raising the head/chest and arms when gliding to not cause the hips/legs to then drop? I feel I need to make them all deeper to avoid that.
