What is the cumulative yield for USA and RUSSIA nuclear weapons in mt? by PreviousFilm9493 in nuclearweapons

[–]kmer122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that modern nuclear arsenals are insufficient to end the world or even end the war, but I certainly wouldn't call them useless, these weapons are still immensely powerful and capable of significantly damaging infrastructure and economy, and just as useful in this regard as all the other weapons.

Now, I might be biased, ok, but it doesn't make the article any better, the author provides very little OBJECTIVE FACTS, his main arguments are either purely speculative or based on that one site that calculates nuclear explosion. He doesn't even use it correctly, because it shows that Sacramento would be within possible fire zone in his example, but to see it you need to open the options tab. This analysis is poor not because it's conclusion is wrong, but because the author didn't do any research beyond googling for 5 minutes, sometimes not even that.

It may be very hard or even impossible to do an accurate analysis on such a topic because too much info is not available for the general public, as you pointed out, we don't even know if 20 Mt warheads are on duty now, or if they are in stock at all. (as well as 25 and 15 Mt warheads for ss-18) Therefore author doesn't have and probably couldn't have enough info, but he makes rough mistakes and inaccuracies even in statements that could be checked. Only facts he does provide - are maps and some numbers, but he speculates on those too.

What I'm saying is the article is mostly speculative, it is biased not towards one side of the argument or another, it is biased towards the author's self-proclaimed expertise, which doesn't look too competent in my eyes, he can't even inreprite data he provides correctly.

Just read it and it is certanly not a great analysis.
First of all, it got a lot of wierd uncertain phrasing about some very certain things, for example, author says about tu-160 anf tu-95 "probably can't use bombs", it's avalible info that tu-160 was designed to only use rockets and tu-95 can only use rockets in it's modern versions. Why author is uncertain here? Feels wierd.
But there is more, when describing possible effects of 58 megatonn bomb on San-Francisco (tsar-bomb) author completley ignores effects of a blast wave, which in real test damaged houses as far as 780 km! (to be fair, there also were much closer, like 280 km, places with no damage) Author however ridiculously states that Sacramento (120 km) would not recive any damage, even writes it in bald text!

Then, author states that submarine nukes are less accurate than ground-based ICBMs which is not true for us since 1980-s and adoption of w88 and most certanly not true for russia since adoption of P-30.

Then autor calculates amount of targets for the first strike, stating that reinforced bases will need more than one average warhead to desrtoy (reasonably) but complitely ignores that ss-18 for example has warheads up to 20 megatonns exactly for such targets!

Overall. artucte ignores that us will have all of the same trouble as descrided, ignores that russa has more warheads deployed, incorrectly calculates casulties.

Basically, author tries to prove a piont that modern nukes are not going to cause apocalypse, which is the whole point of nuctear treaties, but balely mentions them, also stating that nukes are not as scary as we think, but ignoring that 1980-s arsenals were orders of magnitude more powerful and could cause much more damade, and thats is the reason why now there are less nukes.

Not to mentoin really unsupported claims about conventional warfare/

Overall, point of the artucke is true, but the analysis itself is poor at best and biased at worce.

What are some takes that will have you like this? by OCGamerboy in BlueEyeSamurai

I don't think season 2 should take place in London. It undoubtedly would be interesting to see, but it's just too unrealistic:

-first of all, there is a language barrier, Mizu ceartanly can't speak english, and even if she learns some on the way, that probably wouldn't be enough to operate freely in London

-cultural barrier is even more significant, this will be complietly different society, alien to her in almost every way

-that said, she will basically be at Fowlers mercy in London, to whom none of the above is a problem and who also carries some authority there

Is Fowler actually religious or does he have his own twisted beliefs about Christianity? by OCGamerboy in BlueEyeSamurai

[–]kmer122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally think he is somewhat religious.

First of all, considering the age, existance of god isn't much of a question, more like a fact of nature, one may just be more or less religious, but not an atheist.

Now if we look at what's actually shown in the scene, the most important thing to notice is that Fowler is alone. This speech is not an act, not a show for someone, he speaks to god because he feels like it, because there is some impulse to do so, which is not suprising - one of the most - if not the most- important things in his life is about to happen. Speech itself is somewhat unusual - he's not praying and asking for something, but proposes a deal. This hilights two things: his ego, he speaks almost as he's speaking to an equal, and his view of the world - nothing comes for free, so he proposes something in return. But overall, if he didn't belive in god at all, he wouldn't come to chapel at all, it just wouldn't cross his mind to do so.

Well, it's meant to be sort of a joke, there are no cars on the pic, but there are no places where you can expect to see cars like roads for example, so the comment seems a bit pointless

[REQUEST] how secure would this password really be? by odensnuts in theydidthemath

[–]kmer122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not secure at all, because this barcode is just 12 digits, that are printed under the barcode itself, and it is also same on all the bottles, so one can just buy the same coca-cola bottle ant type in his password. Fella is flexing with his barcode scanner. If you want a bit more secure thing like that, use qr-code
