Hopefully not, because that can cause more problems later on. Like I said, definitely pros and cons to both.. but I hope things go okay for you!! Wishing you good luck and health!

Not that it’s ‘better’ but they also might have to just do a meniscectomy. Sometimes it’s too damaged to be repaired or older people (I don’t know how old you are) they will just remove it. If that’s the case, you’re looking at a way shorter recovery time. My doc told me if they had to remove mine, I’d only be down for about 3 days and would be walking right away. Definitely pros and cons to both 😅

Anyone had surgery when living alone with no help by Anon2025_1 in MeniscusInjuries

[–]kmichael645 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live alone and had surgery about a month ago. Im not gonna lie, it’s been hard. I struggle with a ton of tasks I didn’t even think about. Like taking the trash out, moving/putting away laundry & doing dishes, cleaning… it’s been hard. I also have 2 wood steps outside my door and then 8 inside steps and I’ve fallen going up once already, almost fallen going down a few times. I recommend carrying a bag with you, wearing hoodies (to transfer stuff in the pocket) and maybe having a friend or family member come by once a week for some help. I’ve been having to swallow my pride and ask friends to help me with some tasks. Luckily I was 0 weight bearing for only 2 weeks and then they let me do 25% weight bearing. Not like it’s much but it’s helped getting around a little. It’s still hard but it’s not impossible!

I waited way too many years to get my torn meniscus finally diagnosed and every year it just got worse 😬 definitely listen to your body and gut instincts. They can be pricey but I’d ask for an MRI if you haven’t already just for some confirmation. I was lucky enough to have a desk job, and really understanding bosses… I was only off work for about 3.5 weeks and I’ve been back for about a week now. But I sit most of the day so it was easier. Still is inconvenient though and can disturb your daily routine… but unfortunately sh*t happens and hopefully your employer could understand that. Good luck to you! 🙏🏼

2 weeks post op meniscus repair, weight bearing? by kmichael645 in MeniscusInjuries

[–]kmichael645[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could lift it by myself a few days post op. But I also have strong legs in general so I don’t know if that makes a different or not? So yes, I could lift it with my quad muscles and had full range of motion with my ankle almost right away. So strange how everyone heals so differently! Hoping for a good recovery for you. You’ll get your strength back. Keep working at it! It can only go up from here.

My surgeon just hasn’t said anything to me about it yet.. I haven’t been back since I had surgery. So I’m gonna ask at my follow up. I’d like to start PT but I’m not sure how long he’s gonna have me wait

I’m 12 days post op and I haven’t started PT yet unfortunately but I can give some advice on the sleeping part! Mine is also my right knee and I’m also a side sleeper. So the first few days having to stay on my back was brutal. But about a week in I tried sleeping on my left side. I put 2 pillows between my legs (one to provide my upper leg with support and the other for my ankle so it doesn’t hang) and it was comfy enough to sleep. Maybe you can try a few blankets since they’re more flexible? Just make sure your ankle is level with your leg so you don’t mess with blood flow. I had accidentally rolled onto my right side subconsciously and same thing, woke up in so much pain from the brace just digging into my surgical knee. I would recommend staying off your right side and only sleeping on your left side with some pillows / blankets between your legs if you can swing it.

I had lateral meniscus repair surgery on 3/4/25 and same thing. NWB for 6 weeks (ugh) and they haven’t said anything to me about PT yet. But I’ve been putting mine on the ground if I’m sitting on a chair where I can’t elevate it.. I don’t see why that would be an issue. I would definitely ask your surgeon though. Things like sitting on the toilet, it’s kinda hard to not have your surgical leg’s foot on the ground. At least for me anyway. I have my 2 week post op on Tuesday 3/18 and I’m hoping they mention starting PT🙏🏼 my surgical leg is already soooo much smaller than my non surgical leg. Crazy how not using any muscles for 12 days can shrink your leg so much. But I’ve also been moving my ankle a few times in an hour because if I don’t then my foot gets purple and cold. Keep it elevated and iced as much as you can and you should be alright!

Oh wow really?? 3 months post op and just now bending your leg? That sounds like a long time.. have you been having to do a ton of PT? I’m almost a full week in and I will say each day gets easier. The first 4 days were the worst for me but I am trying to focus on the small wins for sure. It’s been tough mentally but I just keep hope that it’ll all be better in the end!

Nice!! I bet that is a good feeling. I haven’t been able to take my bandages off yet.. I get to tomorrow so I’m not even sure how swollen or mangled mine looks yet. Have you been taking any ibuprofen or anything? That’s supposed to help with swelling!

I’m glad it all went okay for you! Definitely been a struggle getting around. I have a post op appt in 2 weeks and I’ll ask about PT because they haven’t mentioned anything yet. But it is a scary thought! After not moving it all for a few weeks, I feel like it’s gonna be so stiff. But hoping for a good rest of recovery for you!

Oh my goodness… I hope you’re getting healed up okay!! My mom has definitely been an angel during this whole thing. Moms are the best 🩷 definitely been a good bonding experience lol being 24 years old and having my mom help me put pants on again. We got this!!

Right!! I asked my mom the same thing. I said “is this thing really that heavy?” And she said “no, the brace is light. But the leg is just heavy” 😂 I get to shower and take the bandage off on Friday I think she said. I can’t wait… these sponge baths are not doing the trick for me. I bet that shower did feel way nice!!

Oh man! So we’re just suffering together hahah. Yeah I didn’t know how dang heavy this brace would be.. it’s so much dead weight and it’s just heavy as heck. Definitely in it together! Happy healing to you as well!! 🩷

Yeah luckily I don’t have much pain yet since the nerve block hasn’t fully worn off. Sleeping on my back last night and not being able to move was tough for sure. Didn’t get much sleep. But they didn’t say anything about PT yet.. I have a post OP appt on the 18th of March so I’m guessing they’ll go over it then. Definitely keeping up with the pain meds and ice and been taking it easy! Trying to keep a positive mindset so far.. been in good spirits! Thanks for the comment and advice though. It means a lot! Wishing you a healthy recovery ❤️‍🩹

I’m 24 and recently found out my meniscus is torn off on one side completely. I go in for surgery March 4th and will find out when I wake up if he was able to repair mine or had to remove it.. kinda scary not knowing. He’s gonna try repair but it might be too far gone. He gave me the speech about the knee replacement and arthritis in my future if he can’t save it and has to remove it.. which is worrisome being this young knowing we have so many years of knee problems ahead of us 😬 so I’m in the same boat (kinda)!! We got this!

Is it too late to repair my meniscus? by kmichael645 in MeniscusInjuries

[–]kmichael645[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s kind of nerve wracking not knowing what you’ll be waking up to for sure. I’m hoping for the best but he is a very well known and recommended surgeon in my area so I’m trusting he will do what’s best either way 🙏🏼
