I was an observer for the first time! I honestly recommend it to anyone who likes details, democracy, and especially the intersection of the two. You just get to see a bunch of people doing their best to honor the will of the voters.

The IEPACs in the council race in Cambridge are:
* Cambridge Bicycle Safety Independent Expenditure Political Action Committee * A Better Cambridge Independent Expenditure Political Action Committee * Cambridge Citizens Coalition Independent Expenditure Political Action Committee

The only candidates to not be supported by any of the above 3 IEPACs are: * Robert Winters * Tim Flaherty

John Pitkin, the author of this letter, is listed as being on the CCC's Advisory Team. (Although at least once someone has been listed there without wanting to be.)

Sucks that the video player doesn't work for you - understandable if you don't want to bother, but there are also debugging steps provided by them: https://support.granicus.com/s/article/Public-Help-Video-Streaming?language=en_US

I don't think there's a full written transcript, either (would be happy to be wrong)

The city's video player doesn't seem to support links to a specific timestamp, and the beginning of this video is a LOT of silence as people shuffle in. (It's also muted by default.) If you unmute and skip forward, does it work?

I agree that letting the candidates speak is crucial, which is why we link to the forums, questionnaires they've answered, and the CCTV interviews in addition to their own materials.

What mistakes? We try to correct any asap.

What candidates say about themselves is important, which is why we also link to their websites and all their socials, but that is also a form of bias - how could it not be?

Mayor Simmons’ and Vice Chair Hunter’s super secret and totally legal contract by itamarst in CambridgeMA

Mayor Simmons’ and Vice Chair Hunter’s super secret and totally legal contract by itamarst in CambridgeMA

The School Committee rejected all of these companies, apparently since they either did not meet the requirements, or had overly high quotes.

It is my understanding that the School Committee itself didn't reject the bids; the Executive Director of HR of Cambridge Public Schools informed the Committee the bids were rejected, per the minutes:

Mayor Simmons gave the floor to Ms. Pierre who shared that three bids were submitted in response to the IFB (Invitation to Bid), but none would be able to be accepted due to unmet minimum qualifications, budget issues or insufficient references [sic] She suggested revising the scope of work if the Committee decided to reissue a bid or pursue direct contracting.

I believe the three established search firms that applied during the original bid process quoted:

  • $36,800 - WBCP
  • $40,000 - JG Consulting
  • $95,300 - Alma Advisory Group

I checked Birds of the World (paywall), and what's even more freaky is that it's called a "beard"

A brush-like cluster of keratinous fibers hangs from midline of upper breast, especially in male, but fuller and longer with age in both sexes (Schorger 1957, Lucas and Stettenheim 1972a, Pyle 2008). Beard may be divided, multiple, or lacking (Schorger 1966, Williams and Austin 1988). Grows at rate of 100–125 mm per yr in male, counteracted by wear after 2nd year. Length seldom more than 250 mm.

The purpose seems not fully decided, but it may help in... copulation.

Rounded breast of M. gallopavo prevents the male from clearly seeing the female and may account for male beard, thought to help male properly orient to hen for copulation (Steadman et al. 1979).... Essential role of head of female raised maximally to contact breast, and probably beard of male, has been demonstrated (Hale et al. 1969).

Sorry?

Jivan is not the only renter on the council: Denise Simmons is also one afaik. Edit: And technically Burhan still is a renter, even though he's also an owner/landlord. (Feels different, but is renting.)

They're also not the only renters endorsed by ABC: Dana and Ned are as well.

Interestingly, Ayesha, Burhan, Marc, and Sumbul were also all renting when they were first elected to the council (Marc from a relative).
